Gift Ideas for Teachers
Shopping tips for buying teacher gifts
First of all, if you are shopping for a gift for a teacher, whether it be a Christmas gift, appreciation gift, or a birthday gift, let me just say a giant thank you on behalf of all teachers. So many parents over look buying a teacher gift these days and some sort of token of appreciation for all that we do as teachers really goes a long way to lift our spirits and motivate us to continue teacher your children.
Second, let me put your mind at ease...we don't expect you to buy us an expensive gift. Just about anything at all will do. Even a coffee mug full of Hershey kisses makes a fabulous teachers gift! That's why here I've put together a selection of gift ideas for teachers that are all under $10. It's not the amount of money you spend that counts when selecting a teacher gift. It's just the simple fact that you appreciate what we do.
When selecting a gift for your child's teacher, be sure to remember that they are people. That may seem like a strange thing to say, but it seems like parents and students forget we teachers are normal human beings after we leave the classroom. So, please do not buy educational materials. Most teachers are very picky about their educational materials any way. One class at my daughter's school all chipped in and bought their teacher a printer for her classroom. They spent $120! That was an expensive gift, but school stipends pay for office supplies and equipment. That teacher would have rather had a $20 tote bag that was hers to do with as she pleased than a $120 printer for her classroom.
That being said, while we are people and not just teachers, we do love teacher stuff! We can't get enough of it. Teacher pens, trinkets, boxes, vases, picture frames, you name it, we love it!
Another great teacher gift idea is a tote bag. When I first started teaching, straight out of college, young and into fashion, I noticed all these teachers carrying tons of "teacher" tote bags. Sometimes 3 to 4 on each arm. I thought they were ugly. I had a leather alligator print briefcase that was far more in fashion. Before the end of my first year, I too had multiple totes on each arm. Totes are perfect for carrying grading from school to home and back again. Multiple totes help us keep each assignment separate.
A final super safe gift idea for teachers are coffee mugs. Something about teaching and coffee just go together. I never drank coffee before I taught and now I'm hooked for life. All the other teachers drank coffee with their special mugs on their desk and the aroma of coffee coming from the teacher's lounge was more than I could resist. Some of the teachers that have been teacher for years and years have a shelf full of coffee mugs given to them by students and they rotate which one they use each day.
