Harmony Art Mom's 11th Grade=An Eclectic Mix

Updated on March 13, 2015

Homeschooling Boys for Eleventh Grade

Homeschooling for high school can be a great adventure! I have been busy working on this lens to try to get it up and visible for all of you moms who email me about homeschooling for high school. This topic is one that I find very little talked about in the blog world. Searching out curriculum and answers for my high school age boys has been pretty stressful and as the end of their high school years looms ever closer, I know I need to keep good tracks for other families that are hoping to stay the course and homeschool all the way through high school.

We are a mix of classical style Charlotte Mason homeschoolers using Tapestry of Grace curriculum as our foundation for history, literature, geography, art, and music.

We are putting a heavy emphasis on math and science in the last few years of high school because of our sons' interests.

We have plenty of fun with our boys but they are receiving a solid education in the basics as well.

World Geography and Cultures

If you click the cover image at the right, you will be able to download our complete year's geography plans for free. I have included week by week assignments and ideas for you using the resources listed below. >>>>

For a complete list of all the resources we used in our World Geography and Cultures course, you can click HERE FOR A LIST ON AMAZON.COM.

I have also pulled together a supplemental list for the literature that we read in connection with our geography course: LIST OF LITERATURE ON AMAZON.COM

We decided to take a break from chronological history this year and focus on world geography and culture. Our whole family has enjoyed learning not only where countries are in the world but going a little deeper by focusing on modern events and happenings in the news. I gathered a variety of tools to make our study more alive and meaningful.

Each week we have a country planned to study and using the Internet and library sources, complete notebooking pages and maps. Many of my selections were suggestions from Guest Hollow.com(formerly Our Los Banos.com) where she had a high school level geography program outlined. It is no longer available but I will share many of the resources she had outlined in her plans.

The spine for our geography plans is the Trail Guide To World Geography from Geography Matters. This notebook style program comes with daily geography questions, maps, art suggestions, recipes, and more in-depth research questions.

Jumping off from the Trail Guide plans, my boys are asked to thoroughly complete each assignment and then using History Scribe notebook pages, record facts, figures, and current events from each country.

We use a world map to keep track of daily current events that we hear about in the news and also to mark weather events like hurricanes or tornadoes.

Geography has become part of our every day life.

I highly recommend the Wonder Maps from Bright Ideas Press!

Geography Extras We are Enjoying

LeapFrog Explorer Smart Globe
LeapFrog Explorer Smart Globe

This globe is a little expensive but we waited and found it at half price before we purchased it. The whole family enjoys working with this globe and it has even come out at adult parties!

GeoPuzzle Europe - Educational Geography Jigsaw Puzzle (58 pcs) - by Geotoys
GeoPuzzle Europe - Educational Geography Jigsaw Puzzle (58 pcs) - by Geotoys

These nice sized puzzles have pieces the shapes of the countries. A great way to learn how the map fits together.

10 Days in Africa Game
10 Days in Africa Game

Our family has learned a lot about the geography of Africa playing this game. We can now recognize names of countries that we didn't even know before. Great fun way to reinforce your geography skills.

Netflix to Supplement our Geography Study

We use Netflix to supplement our geography studies. Our whole family feels a part of the unit this way and it is a great way to learn about current history in the countries under study. Here are a few of the titles from our Netflix list from this year.

Eleventh Grade Literature

We are combining Tapestry of Grace Year 3 Classic with Ambleside Online selections to round out our formal literature study. We are reading, writing, and discussing these selections. Some of the poetry is going to be memorized and the Shakespeare plays we are reading and following along with audio versions for the flavor of the Old English style of language.

Poetry and Shakespeare Selections

We will be using the Oxford Book of English Verse or online sources for reading the following poets.

Romantic Poets: Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats (These are covered in Tapestry of Grace Year 3 Classic)

We will listen to the Shakespeare selections on Naxos.com. We enjoy listening and following along in our own copies of the plays.

The New Oxford Book of English Verse, 1250-1950 (Oxford Books of Verse)
The New Oxford Book of English Verse, 1250-1950 (Oxford Books of Verse)

We will be using this for our study of Romantic Poets, as well as Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson.

Review of Institiute for Excellence in Writing

I wrote this review for Curriculum Choice and you may be interested in reading more about our experiences with the program.

Apologia Physics - Excellent Program for my high schooler!

We stared off the year not quite sure that our 11th grader was ready for Apologia Physics. The prerequisite says that they need to have completed Algebra 2 and we had not done that yet. We were in the middle of the Saxon Algebra 2 book but decided to give it a shot anyway. It was a very good decision. The math and physics are running fairly parallel, no problems so far with the math and we are in Module 7.

Physical Fitness for 11th Grade

We are continuing to use the President's Challenge for our foundation in our PE courses.

President's Challenge

They are asked to daily work on push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, stretching, and jump roping. Once a week they run a timed mile.

In addition, we as a family have made fitness goals to participate in activities that we enjoy like snowboarding, basketball, bike riding, and baseball. We try to have fun and stay fit at the same time.

Auto Upkeep - Our Simple Auto Shop Plans

This curriculum is a simple way for homeschoolers to add an auto shop type class to their course line up. My 11th grader is starting to show an interest in cars and we decided that it would be beneficial for him to have the basics of auto mechanics and maintenance under his belt before he leaves home.

You can see my complete review on Curriculum Choice

This is on the schedule three days a week and the other two days he works on robotics or music appreciation.

Robotics Course - Elective

We have been working through this series of books with our Lego Mindstorms NXT Robots over the last three years. The boys are capable of designing, building, and programming the robots quite effectively by this time. Please see my blog for more information on how we implement this plan.

They work on this one long afternoon a week.

You can read more specifics on my additional page on Squidoo. Lego Robotics

I am thrilled to have found your lenses. I am pinning many of them to come back. I'm planning my homeschool year for next year--I'll have 11th, 6th, 4th grade boys and 9th, 2nd, and K girls with a toddler thrown in the mix for fun! You have great resources for me! I'll be sharing them w/ my homeschool group as well!

Wow! I love all the classics of literature and the strong history foundation. It's hard to believe that one day Sprite will be in 11th grade, but the time goes by so very quickly.
