How to Write Thank You Notes

Updated on October 16, 2014

How to write a Thank You note that is appreciated

Just think about yourself- Do you prefer a very nice but printed card over a note with a personal feeling expressed? You might say - I don't care, it is the card that matters.

Well - others would say - a personal handwritten card is more precious.

I say - it depends on who you write it to. Some would love to have a beautiful card with a personal touch added inside. Again somebody you are close to could be more happy over an all together handwritten little note.

Personally I have received e-cards that have warmed my heart so much! My friend took the time to remember me with a card - that is precious in itself.

Books with text - suggestions

Here are some really good books that help you find what to say. And you can use these not only on cards - use them when ever your own vocabulary is empty....

Wedding Etiquette cards - lots of good suggestions

Here is just the beginning of the text:

Thank You Do's and Don'ts

1. Never, Never, Never, send a preprinted thank you card. When you send a preprinted card, you are telling the person receiving the thank you that their gift didn't mean enough to you to even receive a mention in your note. A warm personalized, handwritten note, regardless how brief, tells the guest how much you appreciated the gift and how it will be cherished for years to come. Handwritten notes express sincerity.

2. Be sure to send thank you notes to friends and relatives who arrange showers and parties for you. It is appropriate to thank them for the party or shower in the same card you send thanking them for their gift.

Thank you so very much for leaving a comment!

It seems that the etiquette rules today have been getting lost for some folks. A brief but sincere thank-you note is always appropriate. You've provided excellent suggestions and sample cards.

Very useful lens. We had to write "thank you" notes as part of English classes in school but were never actually taught what to put in them (not that I recall, anyway). When younger, writing a thank you note for a Christmas present was a hated chore, even though it would only have taken 5 minutes - it seemed like an eternity then. Now, with so many cards available to buy or print out, there is even less excuse for not sending a thank you for someone's kindness.

I can't thank you enough for all that you have done for me. About a year ago I my partner split up, we had both made BIG mistakes in our relationship. He ended up moving away from me to pursue a new life. I knew in my heart that he would be the only one to make me happy. I was relieved when I found your email on a site about what you have done. I requested 1 to 2 day casting of the reunite us love spell and within 3days mark company had relocated him back to our hometown where I still lived. We immediately reconnected and move in with each other. Our wedding date is set for Summer 2012. Expect to see your invite in the mail thanks to

It seems that some don't think a Thank You note is as important as it used to be. I think it is very important and just plain decent to write thank you notes.

I am a stickler for thank-you notes & make sure the kids always right them (as I do). They are sometimes less happy about it than others, but who cares! This is just basic good manners.

Loved your lens about thank you cards! I recently sent one to a really nice man who got his company to send me a free replacement cap for a device his company made (I wasn't the first owner of the device so I didn't expect to get the cap for free!) He later emailed me and said that my thank you note was the first he or anyone from his company had received in over 10 years! I guess it made the rounds around the office. It's so sad that these notes are becoming a forgotten art.
