This is the culminating activity we did after a 7 week hands-on unit study on anatomy of the human body. Children presented game show themed games related to the human body or other creative presentations, and we had a systems-of-the-human-body themed dinner. These lessons are geared toward 4th-5th grade level children and their siblings. This unit study was created by another creative mom for our weekly homeschool co-op. We meet each week for 2 1/2 hours and have 33 children between the ages of 1-13. Use these fun lessons with your classroom, family, after school program, camp, or co-op!

Human Body Game Shows

Each family (or you can have a group of students) selected a system of the human body and created a game show or performance related to that system of the body. We had Cardiovascular System Jeopardy, Skeletal System $10,000 Pyramid, Immune System Interactive Theater, Nervous System Challenge, and more. For some games the family was the only one participating. In other games/performances, all the children got to participate.

Other great options could include Digestive System Family Feud; Skeletal System Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?; Integumentary System Win, Lose, or Draw; Endocrine System Wheel of Fortune; Lymphatic System Password; Muscular System Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader/Homeschooler?, Urinary System Weakest Link, and/or Respiratory System Pictionary.

Systems on the Body Mnemonic

The major systems of the body include the Endocrine system, Nervous system, Muscular system, Urinary system, Cardiovascular system, Digestive system, Integumentary system, Skeletal system, Respiratory system, Reproductive system, & Lymphatic system. A mnemonic device to remember each of the systems is:

Each night my unintelligent cat dives into some really rocky lakes.

Human Body Songs - We didn't include songs in our end of the unit presentation. If you'd like to add songs, this CD has a great selection from which to choose!

Lyrical Life Science Volume 3 - The Human Body
Lyrical Life Science Volume 3 - The Human Body

Throughout our unit on the human body we listened to the CD's from Lyrical Life Science. They are catchy tunes with plenty of substantial scientific material in them! Also look for the great workbook that goes along with this CD.

Human Body Themed Meal

We had a delicious human-body-themed meal.

Our meal included:
Cell Pizza (supreme pizza)
Chicken Legs (muscles and bones)
Pork Butt (muscle)
Sausage Links (intestines)
Bone with Marrow Biscuits (pig-in-a-blankets shaped to look like bones)
Spirilla Macaroni and Cheese (macaroni and cheese made with spiral pasta)
Vegetable Skeleton Tray
Bronchial System Grapes on Stems
"White Blood Cell" Rolls (regular rolls)
Skin with Moles (Chocolate Chip Cookies)
Brain Cake
Band-Aids with Blood (graham crackers with cream cheese and red jam)
Blood Punch (red Hawaiian Punch)

More Recipe Options Include

Field Trip Ideas

Try to find someone who could teach a First Aid Class and/or at least teach the children the Heimlich Maneuver or CPR. During this unit we visited our local Museum of Science & Health, which has a fun exhibit on the human body. We visited our family doctor's office and got to see many of the models and posters in the office, and we met with a personal trainer who discussed the importance of exercise to keep bodies fit.

Fun for the Kitchen

The molds are great for jell-o (use the jell-o wiggler recipe), cakes, and pate!

Don't forget about fun cookie cutters!

The cookie cutters are great for cookies, pizza, or sandwiches!

Which human body system do you find the most fascinating?

Create edible DNA models, made models of the insides of bones, dissect deer organs, create a working model of the respiratory system, play immune system freeze tag, and more in this fun 7-8 lesson unit on human anatomy! (An optional lesson on genetics and DNA is included.)

  • Cells and DNA Lesson - This is part 1 of a 7 part hands-on unit study on anatomy of the human body. Create edible models of human cells and DNA, look at cheek cells under a microscope, and more!
  • Genetics Lesson – This is an optional but very worthwhile lesson for the Human Anatomy Unit Study. Use M&M's to determine genetic traits, extract DNA from a strawberry using normal household materials, create edible DNA strands using marshmallows and licorice, design dog breeds as you select alleles, and more in this fun lesson on Genetics!
  • Skeletal and Muscular Systems Lesson - This is part 2 of a 7 part hands-on unit study on anatomy of the human body. Create models of bone parts, use stickers to label the bones on your body, dissect soup bones, measure the range of motion of your joints, and more!
  • Nervous System Lesson - This is part 3 of a 7 part hands-on unit study on anatomy of the human body. Create a clay model of the brain, twist together a pipe cleaner neuron, train your reflexes, dissect a deer brain and a cow eyeball (optional), and more!
  • Digestive System Lesson - This is part 4 of a 7 part hands-on unit study on anatomy of the human body. Demonstrate how each part of the digestive system works using crackers, pantyhose, create teeth molds, prepare and eat a salad while discussing healthy eating habits, and more!
  • Circulatory System Lesson - This is part 5 of a 7 part hands-on unit study on anatomy of the human body. Walk through your circulatory system, create a blood model and fake movie blood, measure your heart rate, dissect a heart, and more!
  • Respiratory System Lesson - This is part 6 of a 7 part hands-on unit study on anatomy of the human body. Create a lung model, measure lung capacity, dissect a lung, play a respiratory relay race, and more!
  • Immune System Lesson - This is part 7 of a 7 part hands-on unit study on anatomy of the human body. Play immune system freeze tag, watch how germs spread, observe bacteria under a microscope, and more!
  • Human Body Unit Study Presentations and Field Trip Ideas - This is the culminating activity for the 7 part hands-on unit study on anatomy of the human body. Children presented game show themed games related to the human body or other creative presentations, and we had a systems-of-the-human-body-themed meal. Recipes are included! Also included are the field trips we attended during this unit.

I like this idea. Children can learn about anatomy and also many kinds of vegetables. This is suitable for all ages group to learn.
