Joseph Haydn-Listening and Lesson Plans

Updated on July 28, 2015

Joseph Haydn, also known as Papa Haydn

This lens gathers a lot of really fun links for studying Joseph Haydn, especially the Surprise Symphony. My children love his music and we often listen as we eat breakfast or during our drawing time.

He wrote over one hundred symphonies and became known as the "Father of the Symphony". He brought about great changes in music of his time and contributed much to the Classical Period of music.

Use my lens to learn more about this composer with your children. I give listening suggestions, links to resources to look for at your library, ideas for following up your composer study, and some fun activities for children.

Haydn was so well-known that later composers, like Mozart and Beethoven, went to study with him

I sing with the Leeds Philharmonic Chorus in England, and we're rehearsing Haydn's Creation (performance 9th March at Leeds Town Hall - quick plug there!). It's fabulous music - and I like his symphonies and Masses too.

I was checking out the Story of Haydn cd, and realized that Haydn wrote the music that is the German national anthem. I had no idea, despite living there for three years.

You're right this is a great price. I've seen these as high as $10 each.
