Each page has a simple rhyme concerning the word starts with that letter and then includes a bit more about that particular regional animal, location, etc. It provides a wonderful overview of what makes each state unique. Both modern and historical aspects of the state are includes. Plus, the illustrations are beautiful!

Horseshoe Crabs and Shorebirds: The Story of a Foodweb
Horseshoe Crabs and Shorebirds: The Story of a Foodweb

This is a nice picture book about how various animals feed off of the eggs of horseshoe crabs. It takes place on the coast of Delaware. It does show the horseshoe crabs mating and also mentions that they are prehistoric animals. Otherwise, this is a great book that my children (ages 2-9) enjoyed.

More Good Picture Books Related to Delaware

Caesar Rodney's Ride: The Story of an American Patriot by Jan Cheripko tells the true story of Caesar Rodney, who traveled to Philadelphia (despite his struggle with cancer) to cast the determining vote for Delaware to agree to declare its independence from England in 1776. Because of this he was not able to go to England to receive medical care that may have successfully treated his cancer. This book shows how our founding fathers were brave and made many sacrifices for our freedom. I highly recommend this book!

Into Enchanted Woods (Winterthur Book for Children) by Jennifer Bryant is about two children who venture into a fairy tale while on a walk to find blueberries Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library in Delaware.

Red Knot: A Shorebird's Incredible Journey by Nancy Carol Willis tells the story of the amazing journey of the red knot as it migrates and briefly lands along the Delaware Bay each year.

Crab Moon (Read and Wonder) by Ruth Horowitz is about a boy who rescues horseshoe crabs by flipping them back over on the beach. It does mention "millions of years" but is a nice story otherwise.

When the Shadbush Blooms by Carla Messinger is about two generations of Lenape Indians (also known as the Delaware Indians), a modern Lenape and a traditional Lenape. This shows how their ways of life and traditions have changed over time but have also stayed very similar. It also includes Lenape vocabulary.

Red Bird by Barbara Mitchell Katie is about a modern Nanticoke girl who lives in the city and goes with her family to an annual powwow near Millboro, Delaware.

The Legend of the Cranberry: A Paleo-Indian Tale by Ellin Greene is a Lenape, or Delaware, Indian legend, about how a mastodon brings the tribe the cranberry.

How to Draw Delaware's Sights and Symbols (A Kid's Guide to Drawing America) by Jennifer Quasha - We loved this series that combines state geography with art. Each page contains something about the state (a state artist, the state flag, bird, tree, capitol building, areas of interest, and animals.) A photograph will be included along with a brief explanation about that item. Then the page opposite of that includes step by step directions on how to draw that symbol or site. Even my 6 year old is able to follow the drawing directions, and I've been amazed at how well my 9 year old has been drawing each of the state flags as he follows the instructions in the book. The pictures you can see next to the section on worksheets and lapbook pages on Delaware were drawn by my son using the steps from this book.

Thanks for featuring my quiz. Those log cabins were sure built to last. I love the architecture of the government buildings too.
