Letter J: Alphabet Activities for Kids

Updated on July 12, 2013

Fun With Letter J!

This week's letter was the letter J! All of the crafts, activities, and foods we made were all centered around letter recognition for the letter J.

We jumped and juggled, we did paper crafts with jack o' lanterns and jellyfish, and we did worksheets about juice, jelly beans, and jesters. There was also a Jell-o sensory bin full of letter J toys!

Plus, I've included links to tons of free printables, and a bunch of videos to help your Little One learn the letter J!

Alphabet Food and Snacks - Fun ways to incorporate the letter J into mealtime! Serve them all and let your kids find the J, or separate them out ahead of time.

At the beginning of Letter J Day, my daughter pastes the J into her alphabet activities binder that will hold her crafts and worksheets.

J is for Jelly Toast

For some fun breakfast toast, I used a candy cane cookie cutter (which was larger than my letter J) to cut some Js from the toast, and then topped with a little butter and jelly.

Letter Sorting: J is for Jack o' Lanterns

For our letter sorting activity, I cut out two jack o' lanterns, and my daughter pasted the uppercase Js onto one and the lowercase Js onto the other.

J is for Jellyfish

I pre-cut a jellyfish body and gave my daughter a bunch of J shapes to attach for his legs. And googly eyes, of course!

About the time I printed this was when I remembered that we needed to change the printer cartridges, so the colors don't look right here. Anyway, it's a dot marker worksheet, but you could also use it for Q-tip painting or add round stickers instead.

J is for Jelly Bean Counting

This activity focuses on color and counting, plus the addition of the letter J. I had to make sure we had enough of each color, since a few got eaten before she finished this worksheet!

J is for Jelly Beans

For this activity, we first filled the giant J with real jelly beans. Then she filled it with glue and sprinkled over some paper jelly beans. And ate the real jelly beans.

J is for Juice

My daughter was so excited about having another worksheet to do, that she started drawing lines before even looking at where she was drawing them. So there are a few re-dos.

J is for Jump

This activity was easy but fun! We took some chalk and I drew a bunch of letter Js over the driveway. My daughter then jumped from one to another. Or jumped over them. Either way.

And the 16-month-old walked back and forth across the Js, giggling.

J is for Juggling - We watched this cute video of a very talented young boy juggling and then tried our hands at "juggling" some balls from the ball pit.

J is for Jonah and Josh - Add some fun Veggie Tales to Letter J Day! If you haven't heard of Veggie Tales: buy or rent these. Because they're awesome.

This is the very first Veggie Tales video I ever saw, which was in high school for me since they came out when I was a little older. I remember thinking, "we're gonna watch a cartoon??" Yeah - laughed through the whole thing and I've been hooked ever since!

For my fellow Star Wars fans, I found a neat game that my daughter and I played on Letter J Day, mostly because it's called Jawa Junkyard. The game includes matching droid parts and they only give you 3 seconds to memorize it, so my daughter needed help with that one, but there's also a part where you can create your own droids at your leisure, which you can then print or share online.

J is for Jamaican Jerk Chicken

I found some great from scratch recipes online, but my 16-month was sick and my 3-year-old and I were in the process of getting sick, so I didn't feel like making anything that included the words "from scratch."

Instead, I marinated some boneless, skinless chicken thighs in some store-bought Jamaican Jerk Marinade that I found at Walmart. We paired it with some white rice topped by black bean soup that was, also, store-bought.

At the very least, my daughter was able to find the Js on the bottle, which made me feel (a little) better about using something processed. And, actually, it tasted pretty good.

Where is the link for the counting jelly beans worksheet? You say it is below, yet it is nowhere to be found.

      Thanks.
