Live Butterfly Garden

Updated on November 15, 2015

What If We Could Be Butterflies for a Day?

Gorgeous butterflies.

They seem to yell a triumphant "Hello Spring" by adding their vibrant color to our awakening springtime gardens. Springtime a time of rejuvenation, a time of new budding life, a time to admire delicate butterflies silently lofting from one flower to the next giving us welcome pause from our frenzied days.

I marvel at how in some fashion butterflies give us happiness, they send us strength to be steadfast in our roughest journeys, they seem to quietly assure us that our difficulties are just moments in time and will soon pass. They are as nurturing as a child's favorite blanket.

This is a snippet of my marvelous butterfly adventure with my nieces

Caterpillar to Beautiful Butterfly

When you were a child weren't you just a bit amazed that beautiful butterflies started out as ugly caterpillars?

If you were like me it took a while to actually believe this was true. I mean how could it be? Those creepy, crawly little caterpillars that just made you say "Yuuuck" became gorgeous, delicate butterflies? Seemed too unbelievable, so being the inquisitive type I needed proof and went about conducting a little experiment possibly you did too.

Yep, I found a quart jar my mother used for canning, she always preferred Kerr over the Ball brand although I doubt the caterpillars or butterflies much cared. We grabbed a little dirt to place in the jar first, and then a few small leaves for nourishment because of course our specimen would get hungry and needed food to grow. We then punched 5 or 6 holes in the jar lid for air to get in I recall we used my Dad's Phillips screwdriver and a hammer for this. He never did understand why the points of his screwdrivers were always dull.

We then needed to find the perfect specimens to continue our research. With the memories of Pixar's "A Bug's Life" I would imagine those creepy crawly little caterpillars were inching away from us as fast as they could, but alas we captured two. Dropped them into the jar, screwed on the lid, and waited; we watched and waited. Shook the jar occasionally and watched and waiting. As I recall we never did see the caterpillar metamorphosis.

No butterflies were ever released from the jar, dismayed to say there may actually have been a few dead caterpillars instead. Seems rather inhumane now but the experiment was after all in the interest of uh, science.

Have you ever captured caterpillars in a jar?

Nieces Loved It!

I bought the "Live Butterfly Garden" for my two nieces when they were about 5 and 7 years of age. I was looking for a toy or something they could enjoy together that they would learn from which was also entertaining. Being a cool aunt that was my job, right?

They just loved it! My only disappointment was that I couldn't share their amazement daily. They were so excited about watching the caterpillar transformation that I would get frequent excited reports telling me how the caterpillars were changing. "Auntie M, they have cocoons today!" and they were amazed that the cocoons (actually chrysalis) would hang from the top of the container.

My older niece even did a short report for school about it, she was so proud of her butterfly garden and I was proud of her. She tried to educate her sister about what was taking place in their butterfly garden it was so cute to hear the younger one say "metamofis".

Both girls were a bit squeamish then about insects they wouldn't have been the type to pick up the caterpillars like I did for my test in a sense I think it helped them become a bit more relaxed about little crawling things. They didn't much care for caterpillars when spotted on the sidewalk but being able to watch them transform into gorgeous butterflies was a different story.

I didn't read the instructions well enough when I initially purchased the product as I didn't notice that the container of larvae was not included in the kit. Yes, it is clearly stated "Just mail in the included coupon for larvae and food" but somehow I read right past that. So I was a tad surprised when they opened the package and no larvae but after reading correctly we mailed off the coupon and the larvae arrived shortly thereafter.

Here's what you get -

The kit comes with a guide book and a pretty sturdy round mesh enclosure about 12" tall which becomes the home for the caterpillars once they mature into chrysalides and make their metamorphosis into striking butterflies. The enclosure has a handle and removable lid for when it is time to place the chrysalides inside and to release the mature butterflies.

The larvae container, which you send away for after purchasing the kit, comes sealed with 5 caterpillars bringing their own food and is clear so you can view the transformation. Insect Lore even guarantees that you will have at least 3 of the 5 larvae develop into butterflies.

The species of butterflies are Painted Ladies which I don't believe I had ever seen before which was quite nice, although I really can't identify all that many butterflies by name.

Everything you need is included, no fuss, no mess and hours of enjoyment, if I recall correctly our butterflies took about 3 weeks to mature.

Back to the Nieces -

As the butterflies emerged their excitement grew, in a sense it was like watching a new life be born. Feeding time was a special time but one where their Mom had to help.

The girls became fascinated with butterflies that spring, noticing them outside everywhere even though some were really moths, didn't matter to my nieces. It became a remarkable learning time. They ended up getting butterfly stickers, butterfly coloring books, and reading books about butterflies. I was thrilled that they were getting so much from this gift.

When it came time to release the butterflies it was somewhat bittersweet, they had come to love their butterflies but understood that these beauties needed to be free to fly and be happy. The girls had 4 butterflies which I guess worked out well because they said "that way we both have two and can share". So cute, made me smile.

We took the container outside and just looked at it with the butterflies still inside for one last time, then opened the lid and waited. Seemed the butterflies weren't ready to go but then there they went and we yelled "Yea, butterflies!" it was a fun moment.

Painted Lady Butterflies

The Painted Lady Butterfly can be found around the world and has been spotted in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

Warning! Techie Tip -

Classification order: Lepidoptera

Family: Nymphalidae

Genus: Vanessa

Species: Cardui

After starting life as an egg, it becomes a caterpillar or larvae, as the cycle continues they begin to molt (or shed) their skin which changes color in the process.

Once it pupates meaning the chrysalis (temporary home) has formed it attaches itself to a leaf, branch, or the cover of your Live Butterfly Garden and hangs upside down. As the chrysalis becomes darker or sometimes almost transparent the days count down to the emergence of the adult butterfly.

The adult Painted Lady Butterfly is able to fly within a few hours of making its appearance from the chrysalis

Butterfly Poems

A butterfly will flutter by

It's lovely colors catch your eye

Let it go, let it go

A heart may sigh as it goes by

and you may catch it if you try

Let it go, let it go

It has but a few days to see the world

It is so short a time since it's wings unfurled

Give it a chance to flutter and dance

A few happy hours to sip at the flowers.

A butterfly will flutter by

It's lovely colors catch your eye

Let it go, let it go

May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun

And find your shoulder to light on,

To bring you luck, happiness and riches

Today, tomorrow and beyond.

Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.

It's quite amazing how the caterpillars essentially turn to soup and then re-emerge as beautiful butterflies.

This is a cool hands on experience of growing live butterfly garden, an amazing gifts to kids who will take care of the little baby butterflies right from the birth to the adult stage. Love it.

Love this! I have a couple of friends who are really "into" watching caterpillars turn into chrysalis and hopefully butterflies, I would love to do the same. Yes, as a young girl I used to fill jars with gypsy moth caterpillars, I didn't know they were "bad" caterpillars back then and still think they are kind of pretty.

I always think it's a compliment from nature if a butterfly lands on me and sure never feel that way about a fly or mosquito! I would say you got the invisible cool aunt award from your nieces with the experience you gave them and learning that butterflies only live about a month kind of does take the edge off your own caterpillars in a jar I guess. Butterflies are...."are as nurturing as a child's favorite blanket.", now that is sweet! So filled with delight and hopefully those ordering will see your message to send that coupon in for larvae and food.
