Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

Updated on October 2, 2014

Lucy Vodden - The Inspiration for a Song

Vodden came to the attention of John Lennon when the Beatles' four year old son Julian came home from school one day with a drawing that he said was "Lucy in the sky with diamonds."

Lucy was one of Julian's classmates.

The elder Lennon turned it into a psychedelic masterpiece recorded by the Beatles, and later by Elton John.

Many bands have covered the song.

This is the Girl with Kaleidoscope Eyes....

Unfortunately Ms Vodden passed away this month after a brave and long fight with Lupus. It was in hearing about her death that I found out who she was. Apparently she was quite private about the whole Lucy in the Sky ordeal and never sought attention for her link to Julian and John Lennon.

Three reasons to love Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

The Artwork Video

One of the images from the video - Incredible set of images

in the style of "The Yellow Submarine"

the pictures take place in the "mind"

Despite the many rumours abounding about the song being about the drug "LSD", it is actually an innocent fantasy of a little boy.

The Lyrics

By John Lennon, with a little help from son Julian

Picture yourself in a boat on a river,

With tangerine trees and marmalade skies.

Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,

A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,

Towering over your head.

Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,

And she's gone.

{CHORUS}

Lucy in the sky with diamonds,

Lucy in the sky with diamonds,

Lucy in the sky with diamonds,

Ah... Ah...

Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain,

Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies.

Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers,

That grow so incredibly high.

Newspaper taxis appear on the shore,

Waiting to take you away.

Climb in the back with your head in the clouds,

And you're gone.

{CHORUS}

Picture yourself on a train in a station,

With plasticine porters with looking glass ties.

Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile,

The girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

Paul McCartney and Julian Lennon as a child - Julian inspired another Beatles song "Hey Jude"

Paul McCartney wrote the song "Hey Jude" for Julian Lennon to help him feel better when he was feeling down. It may have been while his parents were going through a divorce that Julian was having a hard time.

John Lennon's Musical Parade Collection

I have a bit of a soft spot for the John and son connection too. I named my son Julian, and decorated his room with John Lennon's "Musical Parade" designs based on drawings he did for his other son, Sean.
