Marine Biology for Homeschool

Updated on January 28, 2015

Oceans, Ocean Life, Tidepools, and Aquariums = Great Marine Biology Unit Study

Looking for some help in starting a study of marine biology with your children? Wanting to learn more about tide pools? Looking for help with lesson plans? Not sure where to do or where to get started?

I am going to pull together the resources and materials that I found planning our study of marine biology. My boys are in high school but much of the information is absolutely appropriate for younger students. I invite you to read more about how families can learn about marine life together.

With a little effort, you can make a study of marine biology a fun and exciting family activity.

Marine Biology - General Plan

We are using Apologia Marine Biology as our basic textbook this year with our high school age boys. If your children are younger, you could use Apologia's Exploring Creation: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day.

As a supplement we are using the Marine Biology Coloring Book for our notebooks.

We are going to take several field trips to aquariums and tidepools over the course of the year. We are hoping to go whale watching as well.

Tidepooling is a great family activity!

With a little preparation, exploring tidepools can be a great hook for additional study. Once we observed something in its natural setting, our boys were eager to identify it and learn more.

I was introduced to this book when we were tidepooling at a state park. The naturalist had this in her back pocket and we used it exclusively to identify all the seashore life we found. Great variety and wonderful illustrations.

Marine biology, particularly marine microbiology is a frontier for careers of the future. How do we get more discussion going among home schoolers and also others to make this topic more available and fun for kids today ? How about a debate topic in marine biology for community tv production on science and arts ? Thanks for sharing this lense.

Very nice Lens. I love the home-school information. I wish more home-school families would focus on the sciences.

P.S. I haven't visited any of the aquariums on your list. However, I love the Ripley Aquarium in Gatlinburg Tennessee and Newport Aquarium in Ohio.

Hi Mrs. Barb, I should not be surprised that, in my search for ocean lessons, I would find you! And yet again, you have supplied us with so much to work with! Thank you for the work you do!
