Math Resources for Middle School, including Homeschool

Algebra manipulatives and geometric manipulatives can be just as important to the hands-on learner in middle school as counting blocks and fraction manipulatives are in the earlier grades. Middle school students do not want to be treated like younger children, so it is important to replace those early manipulative sets with something more age appropriate. Here you will find math manipulatives suitable for older students.

Other similar material is available at other grade levels, and can also be a valuable learning ts to better learn mathematics.

Algebra Tiles

Algebra Tiles are easy to make equations visual, and allow hands-on manipulation. They are much like counting tiles, but have variable tiles included. The student builds an equation, then by adjustment solves for the variable.

As an example, solve 2x + 2 = x + 5

2 variable tiles an addition sign and two unit tiles are places on one side of the equation, and one variable tile and five unit tiles are placed on the other. The student would then remove one variable tile and two unit tiles from each side of the equation. Once only one variable tile remains, and all other tiles are on the other side, the answer is found by counting up the unit tiles.

The above is just one small example of using algebra tiles.

Geometry

Usually shapes and basic geometry are part of this level. One would then need to obtain a compass, protractor, ruler, and a set of shapes to properly convey the skills needed by the student.

Shape tiles can be used to teach the properties of various geometric shapes, and to show how shapes can come together to make a complicated pattern. Shapes can be used for tiling, called tesselating, and cn provide an enjoyable learning experience.

Probability

Probability is often introduced at this level. To illustrate probability spinners and probability dice work great. It can be a fun topic, since the subject lends itself to a hands on approach. The items needed for a hands on set of activities can be easily found on Amazon.
