1626: Peter Minuit buys Manhattan.from Native Americans. He paid 60 guilders, which in todays money is approximately $24 .

1956: The first Eurovision Song Contest is held in Switzerland. The contest is Switzerlands Lys Assia singing a song called "Refrain"
1958: The President of France, Charles de Gaulle, issues an ultimatum to striking students and workers. Back me or sack me'. Gaulle's party won a huge majority in the June election

1991: Israel begans Operation Solomon, evacuating 14,325 Ethiopian Jews to Israel.( right picture )
1994: The four men convicted of detonating a car bomb under the north tower of New York's World Trade Center were each sentenced to 240 years in prison. Six people were killed and injured 1,042 in the attack.
2001: After 22 years of occupation.Israeli troops withdraw from southern Lebanon
2001: 15-year-old Sherpa Temba Tsheri becomes the youngest person to climb to the top of Mount Everest.
2001: At least 20 people are killed and hundreds are injured at a wedding party in Jerusalem when a building collapses.

1938 Tommy Chong Canadian-born actor and comedian. He is best known for his involvement in the marijuana-themed Cheech & Chong comedy movies. Cheech Marin, was "closer than a wife. The only thing we didn't do was have sex.
1941 Bob Dylan (Robert Allen Zimmerman) American singer and songwriter. His music career spans over 5 decades. His songs "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" became anthems for the civil rights and anti-war movements in the 60s
1960 Kristin Scott Thomas English actress. Gained international stardom as the doomed lover in 1996 film The English Patient. earning a Best Actress Oscar nomination. She was awarded the French Legion of Honor in 2005
1966 Eric Cantona French footballer and actor Highlights of his football were at Manchester United where he won four Premier League titles in five years, including two League and FA Cup Doubles. After retirement from football, he became a sucessfull actor.
