My Favorite 5 Technology Wish List That Could Grow The American Economic Pie Mid-21st Century

Updated on June 2, 2013

Technology Innovation Lessons From 19th & 20th Century America

History suggests that technology innovation is the driving force for economic engine far beyond expectation of one generation to the next. Take the case of terrible pain of American Civil War that only 4 generation ago, at Mid-19th Century that nearly destroyed America. No one who fought the Civil War, Yanks and Rebs, expected that a boy of 14 named Thomas Edison will so dramatically change America with his inventions and innovations just several decades later.

More than 90 percent of the people in America before the Civil War years were farmers, and few had small businesses relating to farm products. Telegraph was beginning to be used for communications during the Civil War and caught the attention of Boy Edison.

No one in America had light bulb, electricity, movies, music records, airplanes, radium, and other inventions that Edison and some other of his near contemporaries brought forth to make industrial revolution possible again and again in the late 19th century to early 20th century.

American Economy-A Light at End of Tunnel

So today, as America's ecoomy begins to see light at end of tunnel after a decade of high unemployment and shrinking economic pie, it is appropriate to look ahead in anticipation of future magic beyond economic policy debate and ask how do we "make future magic" totally unexpected by leaders, and citizens alike just a few generations ago ?

Is it possible that a boy Edison, or a boy Einstein, or a girl Madam Curie is sitting somewhere at Middle School today as I write this moment, perhaps eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich alone (like Einstein or Edison) somewhere in America and dreaming of a possible solution that will make "Future Magic" for humanity starting next generation ?

My Technology Wish List 1 : Space Solar Power (SSP)

The science behind this technology has been now evolving for decades. From the International Space Station, a return to a Moon Base is not far.

SSP will add an economic benefit to support and sustain America’s return to the Moon and establish a Moon Base soon in collaboration with other friendly nations as necessary. Plans that are evolving are close to high value economic pay off.

My Technology Wish List 2: Superconductivity Application for Power Transmission

Superconductivity power distribution for urban USA is a near term possibility as assessed by EPRI.ORG, a non-profit institute created and sustained by the electric utility industry in USA, located in California.

Please see the companion lense to this conversation referenced below in the link list, titled:

Superconductivity Techno Revolution Waits in Wing for Electric Power Applications in Urban Community Vitality.

This urban superconductivity distribution can be combined with the Gallant Knight of 21st Century initiative in technology development to design and demonstrate a small nuclear reactor using nuclear power generation waste as input .

The theoretical feasability of using nuclear waste as input is a proven but the small nuclear power reactor is now has two VC funded initiatives, one of these is supported by Bill Gates who discussed this entrepreneurial initiatve at TED Talk several years ago and available on UTUBE and TED.ORG website open to the public.

My Future Magic Technology Wish List 05: Nuclear Fusion Energy

Frontier of this technology appears to be application of magnetic containment for experimental reactor design. High Power Laser Energy Research is a key to possible breakthrough in engineering aspects.

Fusion Energy for earth application is still likley to be in the realm of "Basic Research" for next decade or two.

But there is a "Gallant Knight" technology development that is more near term and if successful could open doors to an era of cheap renewable energy.

This technology development is to design a small nuclear power reactor using nuclear power station waste as input. Theoretical feasablity is known.

Competion to design and demonstrate this renewable energy source using vast quanities of nuclear waste that exists in America today is now being pursued by two competing teams with Venture Capital backing. Both of these initatives have been discussed at previous TED Talks recently , a few years ago.

The unfortunate reality is that if there's no immediate money to be made, Americans won't develop technology. Whilst oil reigns supreme, there's no incentive.
