My Love of Architecture

When I took an architectural class in High School, my father gave me his t-square and a 2x3 foot board (not a table but a board).

I was at a crossroads of what I wanted to be in life: An Architect, teacher, writer or psychologist. I chose to further my education in Architecture. Even then it wasn't always easy finding work.

My career has expanded from Architecture to Engineering. The last several years, I had been working more in a wide spectrum of the engineering field. (Due to the economic situation beyond my control, I have been unemployed for an eternity). But architecture is my true love. My resume includes designing and drawing homes, (several of these homes that I designed were in the "Showcase of Homes"), drawings of commercial buildings such as: banks, department stores and industrial buildings. Many of these were local. When my daughter was small and we would go into one of the buildings that I had worked on, I would say, "What do you think of your mom's building?"

I have a talent that many young people going into this field do not have, that is being able to draw on a drafting table. Sure, I'm dating myself. Many of you know that I daughter was in college.

What is involved with drafting on a table?

First there is the table itself with a parallel edge (versus a t-square). You must have several mechanical pencils from various lead sizes (graphite as we would call it). More items include an electric eraser, eraser shield, templates, triangles, protractor, to name a few items and ink or caulk if it is required.

During a few layoffs from this field, I had worked independently with my t-square and a board.

Therefore I Construct Drawings

My family is full of artists. I had always wanted to be one, but my talent does not go that deep. Therefore, my art is vented in Architecture and Engineering. Being out of work for so long, I am rusty, but it is much like riding a bike. Any local prospective employers out there?

Yes, I drew and painted a frog on a t-shirt as a teenager.

When I was twelve I won $10 for my dog drawing in a contest.

My daughter has the art talent. She had fallen away from it when she didn't get along with her middle school art teacher. Today, she blames us for not letting her develop her special gift.

Surprise to see the old fashion way of architectural and engineering designing is available on Amazon. Does this mean there are old dinosaurs and spiders like me out there? Drafting today is done on the computer using software like Microstation and AutoCAD. Though I have utilized some of the other types of software, (in my opinion) nothing compares to AutoCAD software.
