My Love of Architecture

Updated on February 7, 2015

Architecture Is My True Love

When I took an architectural class in High School, my father gave me his t-square and a 2x3 foot board (not a table but a board).

I was at a crossroads of what I wanted to be in life: An Architect, teacher, writer or psychologist. I chose to further my education in Architecture. Even then it wasn't always easy finding work.

My career has expanded from Architecture to Engineering. The last several years, I had been working more in a wide spectrum of the engineering field. (Due to the economic situation beyond my control, I have been unemployed for an eternity). But architecture is my true love. My resume includes designing and drawing homes, (several of these homes that I designed were in the "Showcase of Homes"), drawings of commercial buildings such as: banks, department stores and industrial buildings. Many of these were local. When my daughter was small and we would go into one of the buildings that I had worked on, I would say, "What do you think of your mom's building?"

Learning On a Drafting Table - Talent Of An Old Dinosaur Or Spider

Talent to Draw on a Drafting table.

I have a talent that many young people going into this field do not have, that is being able to draw on a drafting table. Sure, I'm dating myself. Many of you know that I daughter was in college.

What is involved with drafting on a table?

First there is the table itself with a parallel edge (versus a t-square). You must have several mechanical pencils from various lead sizes (graphite as we would call it). More items include an electric eraser, eraser shield, templates, triangles, protractor, to name a few items and ink or caulk if it is required.

During a few layoffs from this field, I had worked independently with my t-square and a board.

I Am a Wannabe Artist

Therefore I Construct Drawings

My family is full of artists. I had always wanted to be one, but my talent does not go that deep. Therefore, my art is vented in Architecture and Engineering. Being out of work for so long, I am rusty, but it is much like riding a bike. Any local prospective employers out there?

Yes, I drew and painted a frog on a t-shirt as a teenager.

When I was twelve I won $10 for my dog drawing in a contest.

My daughter has the art talent. She had fallen away from it when she didn't get along with her middle school art teacher. Today, she blames us for not letting her develop her special gift.

Surprise to see the old fashion way of architectural and engineering designing is available on Amazon. Does this mean there are old dinosaurs and spiders like me out there? Drafting today is done on the computer using software like Microstation and AutoCAD. Though I have utilized some of the other types of software, (in my opinion) nothing compares to AutoCAD software.

Sandy, you are a very talented artist and I know you must be an excellent Architect. I had no idea that was what you did. I love drafting tables and used to have a homemade one that an artist neighbor handed down to me. I moved that thing all over the place from college to my first apartments. I finally had to part with it and have regretted it ever since.

Great Lens. Well Crafted. Oh the memories. My drafting table, my pencils, my T-square, the Tylenol and even graph paper. I also recommend Auto Cad. I used it several years ago for kitchen cabinet layouts and kitchen remodeling.

Great lense! I love your sharing traditional architect tools; they bring back fond memories of childhood, when my grandfather would pour over his housing designs (he was a home builder). Architecture gives me the feeling of something grand waiting to be built and memories waiting to happen.

This is a very usufel tip! It is very usufel and powerful tool. I use it all the time. I tend to use it for a different reason which is to rename layers! For example, if you bind an externally referenced drawing named STP123.dwg to a host drawing, the block definitions have names like STP123$0$BLOCK1, STP123$0$BLOCK2, STP123$0$BLOCK3, STP123$0$BLOCK4, andSTP123$0$BLOCK5. If you want them to have the names BLOCK1 and so on, type STP123$0$* in the Old Name field and * in the Rename To field.it's a very usufel tool for many different reasons!

I accidentally ran this over my (C:) drive and ceneald all possible .lsp files, I suspect this shouldn't have been done and I'm worried, is there any way to restore this action?

I would like to convert this to irapmiel? I don't really understand how to change the lookup table for that? I could just scale the drawing itself but the table is an issue for me. any direction you could provide?
