ABC Songs for Phonics Memorization

Updated on December 30, 2010

Phonics are not only easy but fun with memory songs!

Music is one of the best ways to cement learning in the memory. And music is a great way to learn and remember tricky pronunciation problems! It's easy enough to make up a little jingle when your child continues to forget how to pronounce a difficult sound, but it's also easy to find catchy songs online!

Plenty of television shows for young children have produced memorable jingles for difficult-to-remember pronunciation techniques. Here is a nice collection of these songs, ready for you to use with your emerging reader!

Short Vowel Sound Songs

"Ramma Lamma" Short A Sound

"Sloppy Pop" Short O Sound

Music of every imaginable genre including jazz, rock, Broadway, country, and folk permeates every episode and plays an integral part in both aural learning and as a memory aid. Far more than a simple phonics lesson, Between the Lions is a wonderful program that aspires to make every young viewer a life-long lover of reading. Appropriate for preschoolers through early elementary grades.

Between the Lions is an Emmy Award-winning, PBS children's television show that focuses on phonics and early reading skills in an entertaining format featuring puppetry, animation, live action, and plenty of music. Lion puppet parents Theo and Cleo, with some help from their children Lionel and Leona, run the local library for human and animal patrons alike, vowing always to be helpful, designated readers who never eat their customers. Each of season one's 30 episodes begins with the Lion family reading a story - anything from classic Greek myths, to Old West stories and tongue twisters - with animated pages that spring to life and spark the imagination of young reader Lionel and his pre-school-age sister Leona. Click, the ever-helpful computer mouse, often clicks and drags a main character from the featured story right into the library where it interacts with the Lion family and helps take reading, imagination, and comprehension to a whole new level for the young lions as well as young viewers.

Unusual Alphabet Songs

Alphabet of Nations - You've never seen an alphabet song quite like this one!

"E Eats Everything"

"L-M-N-O"

Kids often confuse "LMNO" in the alphabet song, thinking it is a single letter or word like "elemeno," but this song will help set them straight on the four distinct letters in the song.

Here Come the ABCs [CD/DVD Combo] - Best ABC songs anywhere!

This is a DVD my kids asked to watch LONG after they had learned to read with fluency. Even my teenager will still stop and watch! You will want the CD for the car, but the DVD for the kids to watch when you're home! The visuals of these quirky letter songs are more than half the enjoyment. You'll remember the band They Might Be Giants from songs such as "Istanbul, Not Constantinople" and "Birdhouse in Your Soul" - and these alphabet songs are just as memorable and quirky as those!

"Here Come the ABCs" offers up 25 alphabetically themed songs. However, as is their charming way, the two Johns (Flansburgh and Linnell), use the letters as merely the connective tissue, allowing them to pursuit intriguing flights of fancy that consider everything from the relative power of letters and sounds to animal hijinks. Just as they've always done, there are wistful ballads and high octane rockers. TMBG have always been a family-friendly band, and this disc works just fine for adult fans, who can rightfully consider this simply their newest release. - David Greenberger

We did use songs for phonics. The kids still make fun of that phonics program but they are all great readers today!
