Weather Pictures in Art and Design

Weather has long fascinated us, because we live with it every day of our lives. And when it's severe, it leaves those of us who have lived through it in awe.

Meteorology fascinates some of us to the point that we make a hobby or even a vocation of it.

Artists and photographers are drawn by the power of nature exhibited in extreme weather like hurricanes, tornadoes, thunder storms, and even floods. The artists of Zazzle are no exception. You'll find some powerful images there that are both powerful and soulful.

I am pleased to present a few selected images of weather that you'll find on the internet. Some of These images, from independent artists can end up on your wall, and are available at Zazzle or AllPosters.. Enjoy browsing the ones I've collected here.

You'll also find some information about weather as an inspiration for art.

Vote for Your Favorite Weather Image (Round 2)

This a second poll in which readers can vote for their favorite weather image.

When the first poll closed out, a poster titled simply "Storm" had collected the most votes. That earned the image, by vladstudio, a place in the second round of voting. Will it win again, or be unseated by one of the new entries? That's up to you.

After viewing the seven images below, please be sure to vote for your favorite.

Sailboats Metal Wall Hanging - Set of Four Handpainted Aluminum Panels

Ships and boats at sea during stormy weather is a frequent theme for artists of all kinds, including painters, writers, and film makers.

This dramatic four panel grouping will add something special to a large wall area. You can practically follow the movement of the wind and waves as these two sailboats encounter high seas.

Each panel is 6" wide and 32" high. The maker has thoughtfully included the hardware for hanging these beautiful pieces.

Weather in Landscapes

Artistic Interpretations of Atmospheric Conditions

Throughout the ages, landscapes have been a popular theme for artists, and what was happening in the atmosphere often has played a big part in those landscapes. According to Wikipedia:

"Landscape art is a term that covers the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, and especially art where the main subject is a wide view . . . Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather is often an element of the composition."

For example, notice the sky in "View of Toledo"(c. 1595 - 1600) by the famous Spanish Renaissance painter, El Greco.

In the modern age, photography has opened up a whole new world of art, like some of the images you are seeing on this page.

The Power of Nature Has Inspired Many Films

The power of nature and the heroics of man against that awesome power has been the inspiration behind numerous works of literature throughout the ages.

In modern times, film makers have found the man against nature theme to be irresistible, too.

Recent examples include Ice Age, The Impossible, and The Perfect Storm.

Of course, for classic movie buffs, the words 'stormy weather' can't help but bring to mind the 1943 film of the same name. In the following video, Lena Horne sings the title song.

Heroes of the Storms Inspire Us All

RESCUE SWIMMERS

Among the true Heroes of The Storms, natural disasters, and other life threatening situations are the rescue swimmers of the Coast Guard.

They bravely go where many of us wouldn't dare to venture. They do it to save lives. Among other things, they plunge from hovering helicopters into stormy seas to rescue seamen from sinking ships and capsized boats.

Recently, rescue swimmers were among the heroes that worked tirelessly to save those stranded by the flood waters unleashed by Hurricane Katrina.

The Guardian

The Guardian
The Guardian

The Guardian is the story of two Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers, one an aging legend, one a raw recruit. My personal recommendation: It's a must see!

Though fictional, it really does give you a feel for what it's like to be a member of one of these elite squads.

I am not a big movie fan in general, often losing interest before the end. But this is one I couldn't tear myself away from for even a second.

Scientific Images of Hurricanes

Every hurricane season, we see the space science and meteorology joining hands to produce some spectacular images. Of course, they are not created artistic purposes. None the less, the images of hurricanes from above, taken by satellites, and also by the hurricane hunters, are quite stunning.

Those who appreciate symmetry will note that the stronger the tropical cyclone, the more artistically pleasing their portraits tend to be.

For example, Hurricane Wilma (October, 2005) was the Atlantic Hurricane Basin's strongest system ever. From above, she was something to behold. Here below, however, she was deadly, killing some 63 people in 6 different countries.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

There's been a great deal of severe weather lately, and as beautiful as angry skies can be, they are also a real threat. Severe weather should always be taken seriously.

Is your family's disaster plan up to date? Do you have emergency supplies?

Please don't assume "It can't happen to me."

I have a large number of personal 'weather' stories that I probably should write about some day...LOL. My son-in-law, after initially hearing some of our stories called them 'The Family Weather Curse'. Severe weather seems to have a way of 'following' us whenever we move or even plan for a special occasion! :) Fantastic images of 'storms' here. Hope Hurricane Sandy doesn't do as much damage as they currently predict. It 'missed' us here on the Georgia coast!

The Power of Weather is Astounding and yet it demonstrates just how Small and/or helpless we can become! It's kind of mind-blowing to think about it!

I'm a huge fan of Storms, if its just a plain lightning/thunder storm I'll be outside on the bench watching the storm here and there, depends on the severity of the storm = ] I grew up in Tornado Alley pretty much (Galva, Illinois) So I'm not new to storms = ]

I know that storms are very dangerous but they are also so very beautiful and majestic. When I am indoors I love to look out at the storm.

These pictures are all fascinating! Some are gorgeous while others are almost terrifying to look at. That tornado picture just makes me shiver!

Some the stormy sky and sea pictures are neat, but I wouldn't want disaster pictures as art in my home.

Where I used to live it's almost always sunny:) The place where I got married has rains every afternoon and it makes me really homesick...But it's a mountain region and this type of weather is normal, and the scenery kinda compensates for the rains..
