MyPlate Coloring Pages to Use

Updated on September 11, 2014

Downloadable Nutrition Plate Coloring Sheets to Color

With the introduction of the MyPlate food icon, the USDA also developed new teaching tools and plate coloring pages with the new plate image to go along with the ChooseMyPlate.gov website.

The free printable plate pages come in black and white versions suitable for downloading, printing, coloring and using in addition to full color versions for hanging up. The MyPlate coloring resources come in English and in Spanish.

There is also a blank MyPlate version that students can draw in, label and color the different food group sections.

These plate coloring worksheets are just part of the USDA's educational campaign launched to teach the public and students about the MyPlate food representation guide and are great teaching resources.

You can check the latest section on hosting healthy celebrations with all kinds of ideas for hosting healthy parties created in honor of the first birthday of MyPlate.

In addition to links to the free teaching resources from the USDA, there are links to other plate coloring pages and the old MyPyramid pages to color. These resources make for useful nutrition teaching tools for teachers, health educators and homeschoolers.

I have also included a look and a link to a PDF file of a Plate method that I have used for several years to teach elementary school children, 4-H and Girl Scouts about food groups and healthy eating.

Introducing the New Food "Pyramid"

In June 2011 after several years in the planning the USDA replaced the MyPyramid with MyPlate.

The USDA's (Department of Agriculture) MyPlate is described "an easy-to-understand visual cue to help consumers adopt healthy eating habits." The new food guide is an easier to understand plate that makes it easier to encourage healthy eating.

Dieticians, physicians, healthcare providers and health organizations have called the new plate an improvement over the older food pyramid.

This plate is a quick method to teach and much easier method for students, patients and clients to understand than the old MyPyramid.

Some of the other articles that I wrote when the new my plate came out to explain how it differs from the old food pyramid and other ways of understanding the plate method of eating.

MyPlate Coloring Resources

In addition to all of the other resources on the ChooseMyPlate.gov website, the site also contains pages that can be downloaded, printed and used by teachers and health educators as teaching resources.

The free printable coloring tools come as separate pages with the food groups printed in English and in Spanish. There is also a blank version without any words which can be used to make a fun puzzle.

Parents and teachers can download and print out the plate images, let the kids color them and then laminate them to use as placemats, so kids get an idea about how much to be eating.

Teachers can use these nutrition teaching tools and encourage students to color the English and Spanish versions and label and color the blank version as an interactive way of getting them to learn about the new MyPlate.

Another fun way to teach children about the plate way of eating is to turn the printable pages into a puzzle. Print out the labeled versions in English or Spanish and cut the food groups into sections. Print out the blank version and have students place the 'puzzle pieces' in the correct spots to make a complete labeled MyPlate.

MyPyramid Coloring Resources

Even though MyPlate has replaced MyPyramid as the current food icon or food representation guide in the U.S. textbooks, available educational resources and lesson plans lag behind.

There are still some benefits, particularly with the MyPyramid for Kids and Preschoolers (seen above and below), because these guides encourage kids to "Eat Right. Exercise and Have Fun."

I continue to like the activity in the MyPyramid versions for Kids and Preschoolers. Looking at all of the kids running around in the images (like the preschool version) makes me want to get up and move around.

Because the old MyPyramid does such a great job of encourage activity, I've included the images and links to the old MyPyramid printable pages to color.

@OhMe: That saddens me to hear that your grandson hasn't already gotten this information in school. Glad to read that the information here has helped. The plate method is probably the fastest to explain to kids.

I was surprised recently to learn that my 13 yr old grandson didn't know about a balanced diet and what a meal should contain. All of this information will be helpful in further explaining to him. Thanks.

We were changing our school meals to come into line with the new healthy eating legislation for schools! this would have been a great resource, we used paper plates and divided them into sections for the kids, and let them make their own menus up! great page!
