Quiz: English and British History

Updated on May 29, 2011

Are you ready for this?

Let's put you to the test (purely voluntary, of course).

English history and British history have become so entwined with each other that it seems wrong to try to separate them, hence the 'catchy' title of my lens.

We have been an island nation since the outset and, until the advent of air power, it was our best defence. Hence the importance of maritime history in our heritage and the fact that so many English expressions have derived from the maritime world.

Expect a few questions on naval history!

February 2011 - Ten mini-quizzes added for masses more SquidPoints! Don't stop after the first batch of questions.

Disclaimer: Squidoo periodically alters points allowances which means that a points estimate made at the time of going to press can be inaccurate by the time you get to it. Sorry about that but it's beyond my control!

  • anonymous 6 years ago

History was one of my favorite subjects in school. Even now I am very interested in reading about historical facts.

  • Blackspaniel1 6 years ago

Now, I learn from the History Channel and Squidoo.

  • ChrisDay LM 6 years ago

I'm so glad school worked for all those in this column - it was a 'turn-off' for so many - the teacher makes a massive difference.

  • Anaphase 6 years ago

History was one of my favourite lessons.

  • justholidays 6 years ago

I enjoyed history at school as I felt in the history potion when I was only 10 years old! However, I've never learned English history, apart from the general things, like Waterloo battle, for example. Why Waterloo? Cos I'm Belgian, of course, hahaha. Any way, our King is Elisabeth II's cousin and that's fine for me!

  • Jenn Dixon 6 years ago from PA

    I really enjoyed World History.

  • norma-holt 6 years ago

Loved it. 80% here after all those years ago as well.

  • Jhangora LM 6 years ago

  • JamesDWilson 5 years ago

Didn't realise how important and interesting history is until I grew up!

  • pimbels lm 6 years ago

History class was boring, only got interesseted in history later.

  • anansigirls lm 6 years ago

Loved it, unfortunately the teacher didn't notice.

  • SandyPeaks 6 years ago

First year of History in 1970s was great and easy to follow - all ancient world. After that it was niche history - Dissolution of Monasteries, Diet of Worms - nothing chronological or sequential, all taken out of context, which made it difficult to follow or understand the events as they unfolded. Not a good way to learn human motivation! It took movies and TV to put it back into context, and constant trips to the library to get the facts!

  • awakeningwellness 6 years ago

I mostly slept through history in school but came to love it through my own reading.

  • puerdycat lm 6 years ago

Was educated in Art history, so the THINGS of history. Got passionately interested in history with genealogy. You can figure out so much more if you know the history around your ancestors. Pants?

  • MargoPArrowsmith 6 years ago

I like history, but not the memorizing of dates and names.

  • Oliversbabycarecouk 6 years ago

didnt really like history in school, must of been the teacher because im always watchin history programs.

  • ohcaroline 6 years ago

I enjoyed history later when I studied genealogy.

  • anonymous 6 years ago

    It was later for me.

  • KDimmick 6 years ago

Neither - it was the one subject I hated at school - still don't like it...

  • sousababy 6 years ago

Actually, I studied more of history later, since I found much of what I was taught in high school failed to mention the unsung heroes that I later found out about in my career(s).

Because you're so good at these, I'm adding more mini-quizzes
