Sancturary India Heritage in My Blood_An Incredible Roots Story_ Dewali Hypothesis Om Shanti

Updated on October 9, 2012

Khyber Pass Path to Silk Road Traders, Refugees and Invaders

Ancient India provided a geographic pathway for more than two millenium to invaders, Silk Road Traders and refugees escaping war in the West.

Before the Mughals from Central Asia came and established themselves as masters of Northern India under the new western religion, Islam in the 7th Century, everyone else who came to historic India, sometimes as warriors or as seekers of santurary blend into the social structure of historic India called the Caste System of the dominant Hindu religion of ancient India.

Caste system in India, like caste systems of Europe in England, Scottland, France and Spain developed somewhat differently in each country that allowed each ruling princes to adopt the caste system to exist and promote the cultures as existed in the region.

In Europe, as Christianity came to dominate in the later part of Roman Empire, independent kingdoms, battling eachother in war came to define the hierarchy of their caste system dominated by a culture of war and feudalism.

In India, war also defined the caste sysem and the priesthood emerged along with the warrior castes in the top of the social structure.

Caste System Ancient and Millenium Changed Social Structure

In Bengal for example, Brahmins, the priesthood split into even further hierarchy, so called "kulin" Brahmins ("Clean") at the higher pedestal of society.

My ancestors who came to India did not come likely with invaders but as part of a group of warriors and traders seeking to escape war outside of India many centuries ago, and long before Moguls in India.

My best hypothesis is that this gold skilled craftsmen came with a Sycthian Band escaping war in Babylon in 7th Century BC.

They brought with them their War Goddess Ishthar who transformed to "Earth Mother" in subsequent centuries living in India.

"Earth Mother" Worship today is part of a living Hindu Culture religious celebration, one of the most ospicious in North East Indian states of Bangal, Assam, Orissa Bihar and UP.

In North East India, such worship is associated with the Hindu Religious Celebration of Dewali, victory of forces of Good over Evil .

This living religious victory celebration is a memory of crucial war victory in an earlier century before this Scythian band came to India from Babylon region .

Their religious memory was the victory of a combined force in Babylon to defeat the iron rule of Assyrian Empire for five centuries preceeding.

The combined forces that achives victory over the Assyrians ncluded my ancestor band of Scythians as an allied force under Babylon leadership.

This crucial battle took place in 7th Century BC in Mesoptimia, broke the 500 year iron rule of the Assyrian Empire in that region. This battle is recorded in history as well as in archeology__rediscovered in 19th century.

Likly a century or so later from this historic event, the Scythian warriors accompanied by my gold crafsman merchant clan came to India seeking sanctuary .

The Scythian gold craftsmen warriors received the higher warrior caste status important in war and defense for the Hindu Prince who gave them santuary.

As for the clan of traders and craftsman of gold, they received the middle slot assigned to them along with other merchant clans. But since gold craftsmenship and gold trade were most valuable functions for the state economy, they were accepted in the social cast system as higest rank of the merchant clans.

When this santurary seekers arrived in India t (through the Khyber most likely not by sea), they received sanctuary in the social system of Hindu India of that time.

To give such a sanctuary of warriors and gold crafsmen was beneficial for the Prince Ruler of Indian State, to help fight war of defense. And when war was to be initiated for military dominance over a neighbor as important for that prince of India to dominate over his fellow princely states of India.

The clan of gold craftsmen and merchants provided value for such an Indian prince that helped with the kingdom's economy in times of war and peace..

Bengali Hindu Spiritual Culture - At British Raj Capital at Calcutta

I do know from family stories and scholarly research done by members of my merchant clan in the generation of my grandfather, tthat the gold merchants, had settled in 7 villages long ago in rural West Bengal outside of Calcutta.

They probably migrated eastward several times before the Mughals arrived. They likely lived in Central India for a few centuries and moved further east along the Ganges trade centers to Bengal.

Such eastward migration likley happended perhaps during the Mughals to escape ravages of war that engulfed India during this 500 year time slot of the Mughal Emperors of India.

In early 19th Century, Calcutta became the bustling capital of British Raj who became the dominant power in India . At the tale end of af the 500 year dominance of the Mughals declined and ended in early 19th Century.

The last Mughul Emperor, a poet and lover of music, was exciled to Burma from Delhi by the Raj government of India.

My gold merchant clan retained their clan identity and a sense of extended family which the social structure of the Caste System fitted well under the Mughuls .

These Islamic rulers were mostly tolerant of such non-islamic skills and services that this caste could provide to the Mughul Kings and Princes.

Under the British Raj , similar recognition allowed the clan to exist as a caste in the 19th Century British Raj.

Here is a quote from Ashoka's Edict curved in Rock (14 such rock edicts have been discovered in historic India)

",,,,,,,, Respect for mother and father is good, generosity to friends, acquaintances, relatives, Brahmans and ascetics is good, not killing living beings is good, moderation in spending and moderation in saving is good. The Council shall notify the Yuktas about the observance of these instructions in these very words. ""
