School Bags for College

Updated on August 1, 2013

Ready For College? Which School Bag is Best?

Are you starting your college career this fall or spring? Whether you will be living on campus, or commuting from home, or even living in a new town, but off campus, you will undoubtedly need to carry some basic supplies with you in the day to day routine of classes, study, and even work. Your needs are going to vary, depending on your class load, and your schedule, and your tastes will vary as well.

A sturdy school bag is essential, as you don't want to find yourself faced with your materials flying everywhere due to a faulty pack. Following are some suggestions, along with some specific school bags for college, which you can find at Amazon. Incorporated, as well, are some organizational tips for your beginnings as a college freshman! You'll do great, just plan well, and pace yourself!

Jansport is a Reliable Name in College Backpacks!

Jansport Backpacks: Sturdy, Reliable, and Fashionable School Bags for College

I didn't plan ahead my freshman year. Whereas backpacks and school bags are very commonly used in public schools nowadays, it was rare to see these in use during my own school years. When I moved into the residence halls during prior to starting my first semester of college, it never occurred to me to get a school bag. However, it became abundantly clear that students on campus used backpacks, and the student store was laden with lots of sturdy Jansport school bags. I picked out a simple gray backpack, with a leather bottom, and that pack lasted me through the rest of my college years.

My Daughter's Choice for a Laptop Backpack for College

The Wasabi by Jansport was the pack of choice for my daughter. Entering her sophomore year, she likes to take her books and computer to the school library for studying, printing and socializing...all in healthy balance, of course. Her selection enables her to securely transport her computer without stressing her back, especially with a full schedule away from the dorm.

Created with an expansive area for books and a padded side entry pocket for a laptop of up to 15 inches, this design is available in several basic colors or fun motifs.

Aren't You Glad You Aren't Stuck With Drab Grays?

I lived in the dormitories throughout my college years, and at different times, a school bag was more, or less useful to me. The most useful times were those in which my education related classes took place, as the college of education was a long way from my dorm room. A good school bag allowed me to carry my study materials and books, along with snacks to tide me over during days when I had several classes.

Schedule Makes a Difference

In your freshman year, you may have some ideas about how you want your schedule to work, and while availability of classes makes a difference in the way your schedule works, some of the planning is yours to do. My freshman year, I had noble ideas of doing all of my work early in the day, and figured out a packed morning schedule, with a chemistry lecture at 8:00 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and with science labs for Chemistry and Biology classes at 8:00 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Additionally, I had other classes packed into those mornings. I didn't bank on getting sick, and spending my first half of the semester battling mono. I slept through Chemistry lecture, quite a bit, and struggled with the labwork as well.

Plan carefully, and give yourself a little bit of breathing room between classes. If you live on campus, you will have time to swing back by the dorm, in this case, and switch out books, and materials. If you commute to campus, you will be able to get back to your vehicle, and do the same. This is a different life than high school, and your coursework will be different, as well.

Messenger Bags Have Become Another Great Option in School Bags for College

Crossbody Style in A School Bag

If you don't have a huge amount of books to carry back and forth, a backpack is a great school bag choice. However, heavier loads may be easier to carry, slung over a shoulder, or in front, crossbody style. Furthermore, the design of a messenger bag is rectangular, better fitted to notebooks, textbooks, and even laptops. If you prefer this style of school bag, Amazon has a huge variety, and Jansport is one of many providers of quality products.

Messenger Bags for Men at Amazon

Find sturdy materials, including canvas and leather, durable and lasting. Guys in college have just as much need to get their books and laptops to class. The messenger design is pretty popular, and I still think it's a great choice for laptop transport. You are less likely to misplace a messenger than a backpack, one of my greatest concerns when I transport my own laptop.

Women's Messenger Bags at Amazon

Find something feminine, or flamboyant. Whatever your style, the virtual aisles of Amazon have lots of options, many more than a student bookstore will offer. Keep your laptop and notebooks safe and secure, and take advantage of crossbody carrying so that you don't misplace your belongings when you are on the go.

Protection for your Laptop Computer

Similar in style to a messenger bag, a laptop bag is designed to store your relevant computer needs, and to safely contain your laptop, should you need to carry it to and from class, or study groups, while on campus.

These were not issues in my college days, as desktop computers were only just becoming accessible to the general populace, but as things have improved, the use of a computer in a college setting is not just a luxury, but a necessity. Laptops are common, and convenient, for transporting to class, to the library, and anywhere you might want to study, aside from the traditional spots.

Find the right sized laptop bag at Amazon

Not all bags hold all computers. My daughter's bag is limited to a 15-inch laptop, but many students like to work with a 17-inch version. On the other hand, using a large bag for a small laptop can be risky because of the extra space leaving room for your bag to move around. Be sure to find the bag that's best for your computer and electronic equipment.

Sports School Bags for College

If a physical education class is part of your schedule, or if physical education composes your major or minor area of study, you will more than likely want a sports bag to handle your sporting gear and apparel. Sack packs are popular, and lightweight, less bulky than a big duffel bag, perfect for the individual whose p.e. coursework is minimal. Duffles, on the other hand, are great if you have quite a bit of sporting related materials to deal with.

Find Sack Packs at Amazon

If you plan to spend time at the gym after classes, then a sackpack is a great choice for handling your workout gear. Lightweight but durable, a sackpack is great for holding workout clothes, a towel, shoes and a hydration bottle. Whether you sign up for a semester membership or just schedule a physical education class, your campus rec center may be your best option for working off the stress of a heavy class load.

Find a Sports Duffle at Amazon

These are ideal for students involved in team sports or intramural activities. Whether you travel to games or just need a sturdy gym bag, there are designs for both men and women that provide excellent transport options.
