Smiley Face T-Shirt-A Blast From the Past

Have a Nice Day
When I was in junior high in the 1970s, one of my prized possessions was my smiley face t-shirt. I loved that thing!
Like the t-shirt shown here, mine had a big yellow face with a big smile and those adorable oval shaped eyes. My shirt was white but otherwise, it was very similar to this one. Oh, it did have navy blue trim around the bottom of the sleeves. Hey! It was the '70s after all.
I don't usual jump on the fad bandwagon, but there was just something about this simple design that made me smile.

Smiley Face Featured in Movie Poster - And in 1960s Advertising

The movie poster for the 1953 film Lili featured a smiley face along with other faces. Even before then, the smiley face was used in 1948 in the Ingmar Bergman film Hamnstad.
In the 1960s, the smiley face was used in advertising. Radio stations gave away sweatshirts with a version of the happy face on the front. Hanover Insurance hired Harvey Ball to create the iconic happy face we know and love for an image they had made into buttons for their employees.

Share Your Experience with the Smiley Face
Every time I think of the Happy face I think of the movie Forrest Gump with Tom Hanks.
I'm a total "Smiley" kind of gal - I sign my letters, cards, emails... everything with a smiley. Including my Squidoo comments! :) Kath
Have a ton of them ;) One for each mood, lol.
Didn't Have at-shirt but my kids did.
Ahhh, the 70's. I didn't have a t-shirt, but I did wear a smiley face button.
I love my smiley face! Mine is on the front right side with the saying I'm having a nice day don't screw it up. People smile and give me the thumbs up with a big smile on their faces - makes my day! :)
I love a smiley face! :)
And they they went into the blah state and changed it to have a day with the not so smiley face. Somehow it was not the same. Good to have the smiles back.
I had neon, furry, smily face stickers that I put all over my denim binder - I loved those stickers. I had forgotten all about them until I read your lens - thanks for sharing the memories.
