The State Of Tennessee Truancy Steps
The state of Tennessee truancy law includes these steps.
1. Truants Are Identified
Children in the state of Tennessee who are:
- Attending a Tennessee public school
- (Not in a home teaching environment)
- (Not in a private school program) and who are
- Absent two (2) days (consecutive or nonconsecutive) without an adequate excuse
Will be identified and reported to the director of schools and to Tennessee law enforcement officials.
2. Truancy Is Revealed
In Tennessee after a child has two (2) unexcused absences:
A written notice is sent to a parent or guardian of the child revealing the child's truancy.
Parents and guardians are informed in writing of their children's truancy
3. Truants Are Tagged
After three (3) unexcused absences:
A child is tagged as being habitually truant.
In the state of Tennessee a student who has been absent three (3) days without an adequate excuse is tagged as being habitually truant.

4. Truancy Can Mean Jail Time
Tennessee law officials have the right to take truants into temporary custody.
