America's history and growth from "sea to sea" in 18th and 19th centuries is different from Europe where there are many nations, small and large must cooperate in an umbrella different than the federal, state and county umbrellas of Amercian democracy that allows top down policy from federal level that is not possible in European democracy in post-World War II period.
Disaster of the America Civil War, 1861-1866 merely 150 years ago influenced centralized form of government with wisdom of the Founding Fathers still intact with Constitution and three branches, Executive, Legislative, and Justice check and balance. The cost of human lives was very high. Population of America at the beginning of the Civil War was about 30 Million. More than 20% died due to war, famine and war related issues in that time period and shortly after.
