Teacher Appreciation Day is celebrated in May every year. It's a great occasion to consider a thoughtful gift for the person your child spends so much time with five days a week. A carefully selected gift is a nice way to express your thanks to your child's educator for his or her hard work and dedication. If your child's teacher made this school year or semester productive, successful or perhaps even life-changing, consider some of the unique ideas for teacher gifts found throughout this lens.

Clever and practical gift ideas for teachers will make any eductor smile and won't end up as unused clutter in a junk drawer - your child (and you) will be remembered long after the school year comes to a close. Read on to get some creative ideas for cool teacher gifts.

Whether your children attend public school, private school or are home schooled, show your appreciation for educators with a gift inspired by these teacher appreciation ideas.

Creative Ways to Express Educator Appreciation

Truly gifted educators inspire our kids to bloom and develop skills to the best of their ability, and they make learning fun. Great teachers influence our children in positive ways that go beyond simply learning the mechanics of reading, writing and mathematics.

Teachers spend many hours a day five days each week for most of the year planning lessons and activities that engage and educate our kids. They spend countless hours before and after classes preparing and grading papers and projects.

Why spend money on a trite trinket teacher gift? Why not get creative and become a partner to learning? Instead of a tee shirt or pencil holder, consider these ideas for teacher appreciation gifts that will truly please:

  • The classic apple for the teacher is a welcome gift, but why not make it special by giving a whole bushel of apples, or a gift certificate to a farm stand?
  • Pencils and pens are supplies every teacher needs and appreciates, so give a whole box or a case, and have them personalized.
  • We all want our children to develop a love for learning, and reading is a key to lifelong education success. Many teachers create a classroom library for their students, with books they've purchased with their own funds. Buy or make customized book labels with the teacher's name on them so classroom books don't end up in the lost and found bin if they leave the room or travel home with young readers.
  • Write a personal thank you note, or send email to the educator expressing your thanks, and don't forget to send a copy to his/her school principal.

If you have a limited budget or feel crafty, you can try your hand at a home made teacher gift.

Teacher Appreciation Gift Cards - Educators will appreciate YOU for helping with classroom supply expenses

Years ago school budgets provided allowances for basic supplies including pencils, rulers, paper, crayons, paints and other classroom necessities. Today the burden for providing tools for school falls on parents and professional educators. Teachers purchase supplies with their own funds to supply children who cannot afford them, or who forget to bring them to class.

Gift Cards for Teachers are Always a Great Idea

Teachers get plenty of cute but unneeded gifts from students each year. While I'm sure any teacher appreciates the thought and effort a parent takes to find a personalized tee shirt or pencil holder, more than a couple are enough to last for an entire teaching career.

I like the idea of Teacher Gift Cards or practical gifts. Here are some suggestions for unique gifts for teachers. You can add to this list if you have a great resource or suggestion.

We have a wonderful group of teachers at our school. They do a great job and simple little gifts during teacher appreciation week is not significant but a great way to let them know how much we appreciate what they do for our children.

A teacher friend of mine told me the other day that one of her students gave her a gift certificate to one of the local stores that carries school supplies. She was thrilled and purchased some things for her classroom.

As a teacher, I appreciate gifts that tell me that the parents really know who I am. Donations are also wonderful and bring on any gift that is chocolate!

I suggest the parent and/or child write a sincere letter to the teacher thanking him/her for their work and dedication....or mentioning specific examples of something done in the classroom that was unique or exceptional....or showing praise for a unit of study/project/teaching technique that was helpful to their child....or describing something personal that was meaningful to the writer. Personal notes or letters will be kept and appreciated for a long time and perhaps for an entire career.
