I am a Christian. I was an 8th-grade American History teacher. I am currently a freelance writer, public speaker, & homeschooling mom of 8.

Are you for great children's books, YouTube video clips, free worksheets and lapbooks, and points of interest for teaching and/or learning about Tennessee? Here you will find my favorite picks we used while studying the individual fifty states of America. This is part of a series of pages I created while teaching about the fifty states. Swamp Angel by Anne Isaacs is a fun tall tale of the Great Smoky Mountains region that has gorgeous folk art illustrations that perfectly compliment the story. It is also a Caldecott Honor Book.

A Band of Angels by Deborah Hopkinson is based on Ella Sheppard Moore and the Nashville Jubilee Singers who popularized many spiritual songs such as "Go Down, Moses" and "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" shortly after the Civil War.

Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton is an autobiography snippet of Dolly Parton's childhood. It is basically the lyrics to her song but it has a wonderful message about gratitude and a loving family.

Pardon Me is that the Chattanooga Choo-Choo? by Ellen Eady gives a good tour of Chattanooga as it follows a mouse throughout the city as he searches for the Chattanooga Choo-Choo.

The Rag Coat by Lauren Mills takes place in the mountains of Tennessee. A poor young girl wears a coat made from patchwork rags to school after her coal-mining father passes away. Initially the school children taunt her because of her coat, but she is resilient and captures their admiration by sharing stories about each of the quilt rags.

Count on Us: A Tennessee Number Book (America by the Numbers) by Michael Shoulders is similar to V is for Volunteer: A Tennessee Alphabet, but it uses numbers rather than the alphabet as its theme.

Alfred Visits Tennessee by Elizabeth Oneill is about an elephant who travels throughout the state visiting its main sites.

T Is for Tennessee (State Alphabet Books) by E. J. Sullivan goes through various aspects of the state by using the alphabet as a theme.

Sequoyah: The Cherokee Man Who Gave His People Writing by James Rumford is a wonderful picture book biography about Sequoyah of the Cherokee Nation who lived in Tennessee in the 1820s and was forced to leave.

Tennessee's Sights and Symbols (Kid's Guide to Drawing America) by J. Katlin and Melody S. Mis is part of a wonderful series that combines state geography with art. Each page contains something about the state (a state artist, the state flag, bird, tree, capitol building, areas of interest, and animals.) A photograph will be included along with a brief explanation about that item. Then the page opposite of that includes step by step directions on how to draw that symbol or site. Even my 6 year old is able to follow the drawing directions, and I've been amazed at how well my 9 year old has been drawing each of the state flags as he follows the instructions in the book.

We love this board book series that features two children saying goodnight to the various sites, landmarks, and unique features of each state. It has delightful illustrations and the perfect amount of text for the youngest of listeners. * Also look for "Little Tennessee" (Little State) Board book by Michael Shoulders.
