Folklore "The Deer Woman" a Native American Story

Updated on February 6, 2013

A Native American Mythology started and told inside and around Oklahoma

Have you ever thought about the Deer Woman or The Deer Lady? Maybe you have never heard of her, but would like to find out more. She is part of Native American Folklore stories that have been passed down from generation to generation throughout the ages of their time. This is the way that stories of great people, personal family, great love, and folklore stories get passed on. There are many great tales I was raised learning about when it came to my ancestors. If you stop to think about it you can remember a few that were told to you too. Every family has tales of the past to pass on to the next generation whether you think you do or not. Many times they are blown out of proportion and exaggerated a bit, but always true to form when you start to really listen to the story. This story is one that I heard a time or two of a Deer Lady that was a shape shifter. I was always interested in this story for some reason or another and now I would like to share what I know about her and the things I have had to look up to be able to expand for you to learn more.

Vision of her are said to be because she is a sign of personal transformation or a warning. It is said that she likes to dance and will join in communal dancing. She is usually unnoticed when she joins the dancing and only leaves when the drum beats stop. It has also been told that she can be banished with the use of tobacco and chants. In the various versions I've heard she was originally a woman who was raped outside her village and died. She was granted return by the spirits and takes revenge against all of man. She's also said to protect pregnant women.

I believe because I and my boyfriend heard and seen her tonight at Pawhuska Lake in Pawhuska,Okla. in Osage County. We were shooting off some left over firewirks ehen we heard something that was two-legged that caught both of our attention and then when we were leaving my boyfriend said that he wanted to go into the woods to see what was in there. I said no lets just go home. As we were leaving we seen a young doe running across the road and we looked at each other know we both had the very same eery feeling.

Something like this could walk the earth. Other cultures have their fauns and satyrs and whatnot.

Absolutly not! No such thing as spirits and it is just simply a story that was passed down through the generations.
