Folklore "The Deer Woman" a Native American Story

Updated on February 6, 2013

A Native American Mythology started and told inside and around Oklahoma

Have you ever thought about the Deer Woman or The Deer Lady? Maybe you have never heard of her, but would like to find out more. She is part of Native American Folklore stories that have been passed down from generation to generation throughout the ages of their time. This is the way that stories of great people, personal family, great love, and folklore stories get passed on. There are many great tales I was raised learning about when it came to my ancestors. If you stop to think about it you can remember a few that were told to you too. Every family has tales of the past to pass on to the next generation whether you think you do or not. Many times they are blown out of proportion and exaggerated a bit, but always true to form when you start to really listen to the story. This story is one that I heard a time or two of a Deer Lady that was a shape shifter. I was always interested in this story for some reason or another and now I would like to share what I know about her and the things I have had to look up to be able to expand for you to learn more.

The Basic Background and Story of

Deer Woman or Deer Lady

A woman that is part deer and part human. She has been seen as an old woman, a beautiful young woman, or as just a white-tailed deer. She lures men over to her from behind a bush and then stomps them to death, but if they look down at her hooves and see that she is not what she seems to be the Deer Lady will run. Vision of her are said to be because she is a sign of personal transformation or a warning. It is said that she likes to dance and will join in communal dancing. She is usually unnoticed when she joins the dancing and only leaves when the drum beats stop. It has also been told that she can be banished with the use of tobacco and chants. She is not a wanted creature to have around because she is of bad signs and warnings of leading men to their death.
