The Prompt

Taken from the University of Michigan common application

Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests? (500 words maximum)

A Strong Introduction

Show that you read the prompt and that you are familiar with the University of Michigan

The University of Michigan has a stellar business school that was recently profiled in the US News and World Report. After doing some research, I discovered that the school’s business curriculum fit my interests exactly. The Ross School of Business lends international credibility to the undergraduate business program at the University of Michigan, and the recent breakthroughs and national claim that the leadership education program has won means the prestige of a business degree at U of M is only going to rise in the future.

The Wall Street Journal has ranked the University of Michigan that nation’s top school in general business and finance, which is perfect for my academic interests. I am not sure what field of business I would like to pursue, but I wish to keep my options open as I figure out ways to take my environmental passions into the business world.

Did you Visit the School? Let them know.

The school facilities are incredible. Technology is highly important in the competitive business world, and schools need to allow students to practice using the same types of technology they will see in the real world. The real time trading floor at the School of Business is exciting and cutting edge and I'm sure that it will contribute greatly to my experience at the School.

The University of Michigan is a very diverse school, and it has a number of campuses that each have their own character and campus profile. Cultural and Ethnic diversity is important to me in a school, as it allows the University Community to sustain a broad range of student organizations and a variety of interesting beliefs and opinions.

Finish with Personality

Let Michigan know a little about yourself and your goals

The idea of Action Based learning is also very appealing. Ross takes undergraduates and puts them in real firms across the country, helping them learn practical business techniques alongside their studies. I could learn a great deal from an immersion in the corporate world, and being reminded of the scenarios that I would be training for will help me focus my academics.

As a business major, it would be very important for me to also understand the world of politics. Legislative decisions require swift reaction by the business world, and the Carson Scholars Program would teach me to anticipate those decisions through study of the judicial process. Having never been to Washington, being able to visit the city while also becoming immersed in its inner workings would be a great experience.
