What is Radiation?

Updated on June 24, 2014

WHAT IS RADIATION AND AM I SAFE?

Radiation is everywhere. It comes from the Earth and from Space.

Most radiation is invisible -- it is not felt, not visible, not tasted and without smell. However, it can be detected and it's amounts can be measured when it's there.

Ionizing radiation is measured in a unit called a millirem. If we can't really sense it most of the time, what is it? Materials that are deemed radioactive are made up of unstable atoms. These unstable atoms give off excess energy until they are stable. That excess energy is called "Radiation".

Although most radiation is naturally derived, man can also make it. This site will explore the definition of radiation including it's effects and what can be done to prevent health issues.

The Japanese Tsunami and subsequent nuclear plant disaster has prompted many to become educated on radiation and it's effects.

DO CELL PHONES CAUSE RADIATION DAMAGE TO ME?

Studies have shown that cell phones emit radiation to send voice and text messages to the other caller.

Research has linked health situations like Brain Cancer, Salivary Gland Tumors, Migraines, vertigo and behavioral problems with radiation emitted from cell phones.

Research teams at various universities and medical colleges and hospitals are busy trying to solve the actual impact of this radiation.

Not really...but it is good to be prepared. But, hey, that's only my opinion.

A really interesting lens. The quiz was great. My sons live in Plymouth Devon UK. Devon is famous for Dartmoor which is on top of a massive granite intrusion. There is alot of Radon there, the highest in the UK I believe.
