Updated on January 30, 2013

What is Creativity

Creativity has been defined in a number of key academic & industry researchers from fields of arts, science in academics to business disciplines, specially psychology. A useful definition of a creative product is that it is something (a) novel and (b) appropriate. This definition is given by two prominent academic psychologists, Robert R. Steinberg & Todd I. Lubard in their classic book, Defying the Crowd: Cultivating Creativity in a Culture of Conformity (Free Press, 1995)

Some cultures are more creative than others. Irish for example, or the French are known for their culture based creativity in arts for example.

America is known for being a creative nation in particularly being inventive in science & technology and in business.

"New birth of freedom" waiting in the wing through fostering creativity leading to strengthening an innovation supportive culture, as a nation, but also on a region, community and geography levels.

@terrywoodhouse lm: Yes, agreed that nations and ethnic voicees within have demonstrated creative spirit. But even in the United States, one of the most creative nation in the world waits a new birth of freedom to unleash the creative potential to enable America to return to the path of well-being and prosperity. This will not be easy nor automatic ! Let us continue the conversations. Thanks.

@alicia65: Your observation "unique self" for individuals is most valuable. But "nature vs nurture" still goes on as backgrounds to shape individuality. As Ben Franklin has observed Genius without education is like silver in the mine.

the art of creativity lies within us, each and everyone of us born unique as such it would depend on how individual look at it. When one has courage and determination to learned there's no way to conclude that he/she in not a talented one! great lens.

@kathysart: Your comment is quite appropriate. Sure but we know much about creativity that was not known 30 years ago. Thanks to persistent scientists and artists who have discussed often their own creativity and process of creativity. Surely creativity is above all a self discovery process as well as knowledge elements important. it's been the case with me, and what I know from "great minds".

Creativity is everything.. it is in every single thing we do. When people say they don't have one creative bone in their body? Not so. Blessed lens.

Hmmm, an interesting topic... I wonder if creativity can ever be measured. Personally, I believe that everyone is gifted with creativity in general, and yet each person must search to find the area where their creative gifts will shine the brightest.

Creativity can only be measured by God since He is the one who gives it. Some interesting reading though. I don't think we truly appreciate all the creative aspects to what people have been given the ability to accomplish.
