Whether you're a school teacher, homeschooling parent, involved parent, librarian, lifelong learner, or a student searching for ideas and books on Wisconsin, look no further! What Makes Wisconsin Amazing: The Dairy Industry

When I think of Wisconsin, I think of the dairy industry. It's no wonder. Wisconsin produces more milk than any other state. It also provides 40% of America's cheese and 20% of its butter.

What Makes Wisconsin Amazing: Harley-Davidson Motorcycles.

When you think of Wisconsin, you should not only think of cows. You should also think of motorcycles since Milwaukee is home to Harley-Davidson.

What Makes Wisconsin Amazing: The Wisconsin Dells

Some of the nation's best water parks are not found in the warm weather states. My children were surprised to find out that America's largest water-park, Noah's Ark, is located in Wisconsin in the Wisconsin Dells. My husband visited the Wisconsin Dells but her never visited the water parks.

What Makes Wisconsin Amazing: Wisconsin's American Birkebeiner

When your state is known for snow, cross-country skiing is one of the best ways to keep active during the many cold months. Wisconsin's American Birkebeiner ("Birkie") is America's largest cross-country ski race with over 12,000 participants each year. I have never tried cross-country skiing, but it looks like great exercise and lots of fun!

B is for Badger: A Wisconsin Alphabet (Discover America State by State)

We loved this series that contained a book on each. A short blurb (perfect for if you're reading the book to younger children) is written about each featured aspect of Wisconsin. Then additional information is provided (prefect for if you're reading to older children). Modern and historical aspects of the state are included.

The Legend of Wisconsin (Myths, Legends, Fairy and Folktales) by Kathy-Jo Wargin is a neat trickster-tale legend about Wisconsin. The illustrations are especially delightful. Since the book features many animals, even toddlers should be able to sit through this book.

Clarabelle: Making Milk and So Much More by Cris Peterson has photographs rather than illustrations, but it does a great job of showing what happens on a dairy farm in Wisconsin.

Summertime in the Big Woods (Little House Picture Book) by Laura Ingalls Wilder provides a snippet of "Little House in the Big Woods" in a condensed, simplified manner with more beautiful illustrations and less words. It's perfect if you have younger children who are not yet ready for the chapter book or just don't have the time to read it.

Wisconsin's Sights and Symbols (Kid's Guide to Drawing America) by Katt Lynn is part of a great series that combines state geography with art. Each spread contains a photograph of a particular feature of the state (its flag, state flower, state bird, etc.) and the provides simple step-by-step directions on how to draw it. It also has a short blurb about each item as well. We have used these to draw state symbols and the flag for our state notebook pages.

Milk: From Cow to Carton (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Book) by Aliki was our favorite picture book talking about the process of how milk gets from a dairy farm to stores.

The Legend of Old Abe: A Civil War Eagle (Myths, Legends, Fairy and Folktales) by Kathy-jo Wargin is based on the true story of an eagle from Wisconsin that served as a mascot of the Eighth Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.

The Big Bucky Badger Mystery by Chris Newbold follows Bucky through the main sites of Madison as he search's for his team's lost ball.

Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder (256 pages) is the first book in the Little House series and takes place when Laura was young and living in Wisconsin. All of my children loved it and always looked forward to us reading the next chapter.

Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink (288 pages) is about an 11 year old tomboy living in Wisconsin in the mid 1800's shortly after Wisconsin became a state. The author actually based the character on her own grandmother. This is also a Newbery Medal winner.

Thimble Summer by Elizabeth Enright (145 pages) is about a 9 year old girl who lived on a farm in Wisconsin in the 1930's. It is a classic and even won a Newbery Medal.

Rascal by Sterling North (207 pages) is about an 11 year old boy living in Wisconsin in the early 1900's. He befriends a raccoon but must eventually give up his beloved pet. It contains many of the "growing up" themes typical of young adult fiction chapter books. It won a Newbery Honor.
