Bedding Measurements & Sizes
- Twin Mattress - 39 x 75 inches - Sleeps one
- Twin XL Mattress - 38 x 80 inches - Sleeps one - Most commonly used in college dorms
- Full Mattress - 54 x 75 inches - Sleeps two and also called a double bed
- Queen Mattress - 60 x 80 inches - Sleeps two
Fitted sheets - It is important to get the correct size to fit your mattress. If it is to big it will be uncomfortable to sleep on. These measurements will be helpful in selecting mattress pads also.
- Twin Sheets - 39 x 75 inches
- Twin Extra Long Sheets or Twin XL or TXL or XL Twin - 39 x 80 inches
- Full Sheets - 54 x 75 inches
- Queen Sheets - 60 x 80 inches
Tip: If you have a couple of extra twin sheet sets at home, save a little money; just replace the fitted sheet with a twin extra long fitted sheet to make a set for your twin extra long mattress. A standard twin flat sheet is 66" x 96" and will fit either a twin or twin extra long bed.
The most important thing to remember is your fitted sheet must be made to fit your mattress, meaning you need a twin size fitted sheet for a twin size mattress. You need a twin extra long fitted sheet for a twin extra long mattress and so forth.
Comforter or Duvet Measurements
These are typical measurements to give you an idea. Some manufacturer may vary and be a little larger or smaller, so it is best to check the exact measurements on the packaging.
- Twin - 68 x 86 inches
- Twin XL - 68 x 90 inches
- Full - 80 x 90 inches
- Queen - 86 x 94 inches
Tip: If your bed is going to be raised, you may want to consider a larger comforter. Using a queen or full on a dorm bed on risers will not only give you more coverage but will create a drape extending down toward the floor. This drape will be great to hide all that stuff you will have stored under your bed and make your room look neater.

Tips on Saving Money on Dorm Bedding
So many things to buy for your Dorm, but what do you actually need?
Do you have a few Twin Flat Sheets laying around at home.
Then why not use those. You can use a Twin Sheet on your Twin XL Mattress, it will not be quite as long, about 5 inches short to be exact. Please note that a standard Twin Flat Sheet is 66" x 96" inches. But it will work fine.
You must have a fitted sheet to the exact measurement of your mattress. So there is no skimping here. If you have a Twin XL mattress you must use a fitted sheet in a Twin XL. No way around it.
A note regarding Comforters and Duvets:
You can use other sizes on your Twin XL mattress. If you use Twin Comforter, you will not have the optimal amount of coverage but it will work. So if you have a Twin sized Comforter or Duvet, you may use it to save some money.
Here is a great idea, one which I would of thought of when we were outfitting my daughters dorm room. If you are raising your bed with bed risers or whatever. You may want to consider using a larger comforter, like a full or queen so you will have a drape and more coverage. You will be able to hide all that stuff you are storing under your bed and trust me you will be storing a lot under there.
