Baseline Mike Reviews: The Assassin (2015)
The Assassin Review
The Assassin, starring Shu Qui and Chang Chen. Set in 19th Century China, an exiled Assassin is sent an assignment to kill a man she once loved. Now her motives and decisions are put to the test. Will she obey her master? Or protect the one she still cares about?
I’m not a big fan of Independent films but this movie changed my perspective. The Assassin is a Chinese independent film that is well directed with some of the best cinematography I have ever seen. It’s rare that you see a well detailed and authentic film. The fighting sequences were choreographed very well with little use of CGI.
My only issue with the film is the pacing, it is really slow. But it makes the story more realistic and understandable. I liken it to eating vegetables, sometimes it taste nasty but it benefits our health.
Shu Qui who plays the beautiful assassin did an excellent job in this film. You really feel for her character and what she has gone through.
Overall The Assassin Is a well put together film with some of the greatest cinematography I have seen in years. The action sequences are good and Shu Qui is stunningly beautiful.
I give the Assassin a 9 out of 10.
