10 Actresses you Either Love or Hate: Simply Take Them or Leave Them

Updated on July 18, 2014
Love and Hate
Love and Hate | Source

Hollywood Creates Hate!

Hollywood although a place where fun, entertaining films are created and a lot of love, there is also a lot of hate created in Hollywood. This is partly due to the bad films which are created at times which seems to be an endless stream during certain periods in time when it seems like forever since you have seen a great film. However to be specific, it seems that actresses have caused a lot of hate in Hollywood with a lot of big star actresses having a lot of fans but also an awful lot of people who claim to hate them.

This is the interesting side to Hollywood as it is great to see the better films and irritating to sit through a bad film but it is the individual actors and actresses which make deciding which film to watch that bit easier. This is why it is irritating at times when a lot of films star actresses which you hate yet seemingly everyone loves them, or don't they!

It has shown that people are becoming increasingly interested in stars personal lives, especially that of actresses with everything happening in their personal lives being photographed and documented for use by sleazy magazines. This then effects the perception that we get of these actresses, so if they are getting married and have two children then they must be good people so will like them more subconsciously as actresses. Whereas if we see actresses in their personal lives going to bars, clubs and late night parties and getting drunk then they are bad people, therefore actresses we shouldn't like or watch in films any more.

That of course being said, not everyone reads sleazy magazines or watches E! Entertainment so would therefore have zero judgement call over whether or not they should watch a film due to the starring actress having crashed a car whilst drunk 8 months ago. This is why the only example for some people hating actresses with other people loving them being that people either generally dislike them, dislike their acting, personality or see zero on screen appeal.

Hollywood Creates Love!

Hollywood has brought a lot of love to the world with the films which are produced there which is why it is has become an ironic place. This is not only through the films but also through the actors and actresses which perform within the films. To look more specifically, actresses have been an influential force in bringing a true element of romance to the screen with the actor more commonly bringing the action.

Certain actresses have become iconic figures like Audrey Hepburn who starred in the much famous Breakfast at Tiffany's film which brought around a popularity for the actress even today. Looking at the actresses of today we have many performing brilliantly time and time again, gaining awards and praise from audiences around the world for their performances includes Naomi Watts, Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman.

The films in Hollywood today tend to be heavily reliant on special effects and CGI which is becoming more common within films as the demand for action/adventure blockbusters increases. However these films are not likely to win an Oscar award which is why it tends to be the drama, romance, thriller categories which are usually the favoured among more serious cinema goers. As these categories tend to have more emotional performances (stretching the ability of actors and actresses).

This is why more generally audiences tend to have a more universal approach to love the actresses playing the more serious roles, stretching their abilities than that of the actresses starring in romantic comedies or comedies. As it is the actresses who are more tight cast to comedies, romantic comedies and horror films which there seems to be a line drawn down the middle of the argument with half loving the actress and the other half hating the actress.

#1- Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston is the queen of romantic comedies in Hollywood at the moment popping up all over the place from Along Came Polly (2004), The Break-Up (2006), The Bounty Hunter (2010) and plenty more. Jennifer Aniston first became a popular actress in Hollywood when she got a starring role in the hit US sitcom ''Friends'', which blew audiences away with a lighthearted TV comedy which was relate-able to the normal persons life. However after friends as previously mentioned Jennifer Aniston's career turned to films, but more specifically romantic comedies which seemed to stick as almost all of the films Jennifer has starred in have been romcoms.

It is also quite arguable that due to Jennifer's relationship previously with Brad Pitt (Hollywood actor- A-Lister), her career was busted with more media attention, allowing her more credibility as an actress in films. Although Jennifer's marriage to Brad Pitt lasted a mere 5 years (2000-2005), in that time Jennifer has gained standing as a lively character which happens to be well suited to romcoms. However being tight cast to romcoms means that Jennifer is out of the running for Oscar's and other prestigious awards.

Is Jennifer Aniston popular?

I think that the question ''is Jennifer Aniston'' popular pretty much answers itself as Jennifer has been in films every year since the ''Friends'' TV series ended in 2004, not saying that all of these films were hits at the box office but only a relatively small amount are what may be considered a complete failure.

The way I see it is that if an actor receives regular work in good films with descent budgets and the film turns a profit (obviously the more the better), then that actor is doing well in my book. Although in saying this it does seem that these days a lot of people dislike Jennifer Aniston for no particular reason apart from her acting not being the best. Some may argue (including myself) that although Jennifer Aniston is not the best actress, she does mostly play in romcoms/comedies which she usually suits being apart off. That being said an actor/actress doesn't need to be overly talented to play roles in romcoms/comedies as the film intends to be funny with a small amount of emotion, which I believe Jennifer does quite well.

''Bruce Almighty'' (2003) - $484 Million

#2- Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz has a talent in Hollywood for turning heads as her films constantly surprise with the power to pull a profit. Although Cameron Diaz doesn't look like the big A-Lister which production companies should seek out for big budget comedies, her track record says differently. Most recently Cameron Diaz starred in ''The Other Woman'' (2014) which looked like it wasn't going to be great (barely break-even), but that analysis would be wrong. ''The Other Woman'' had a budget of $40 million yet earned an overwhelming $190 million at the global box office, having swarms of woman flocking to the cinemas to watch the film. Also to add to the success for Cameron Diaz a time not too long ago saw the film ''Bad Teacher'' (2011) open in cinemas for the first time starring the glamorous Diaz, which once again saw harsh criticism from critics who expected the film to flop. However to add to the critics surprise (as well as everyone else's) the hectic comedy ''Bad Teacher'' was a real comedy success with a $20 million budget and an unbelievable $216 million amassed globally. Cameron Diaz continues to surprise critics and audiences alike!

Cameron Diaz although extremely successful with $18 million earnings from 2014 (so far... sourced from Forbes magazine), she is tight cast to comedies and romcoms which limits opportunities for her work. This as usual causes actresses to either get a lot of love from audiences or a lot of hate and to the normal expectations, critics hate everything.

Is Cameron Diaz popular?

Cameron Diaz is more than capable in pulling off the crazy chick in comedies which has enabled her (and still is enabling her) to gain good roles in all the right films. This results in a descent or more than descent comedies which gather profit which pleases producers and of course must have pleased audiences as they have been the cause of the films success.

I would find it difficult to argue that Cameron Diaz was the most popular actress in Hollywood as this is in fact not the case but she is still helping to create profitable films, so clearly she is doing something right.

Cameron Diaz- Box Office Hits (worldwide gross)

''The Mask'' (1994) - $351 Million

#3- Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson (daughter of Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson, but she was raised by Goldie's long time partner, Kurt Russell) was raised by film stars which makes it no surprise to see her go into the acting business. Kate Hudson started out her acting career with real promise in Hollywood as the next big star who would go onto amazing things after she starred in ''Almost Famous'' (2000), which gained Kate critics attention. However as her acting career edged into the 21st Century, she found that she was being tight cast into romantic comedies, limiting her opportunities as an actress. In saying this however on the other hand it has allowed her to carve out a nice niche, starring in some popular romcoms which have become quite unique in their genre.

Kate Hudson has certainly made a name for herself in Hollywood, going the career alone not using her mothers surname 'Hawn', which was a smart move, allowing her to create fame of her own. Among Kate's more successful films commercially include ''How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days'', ''You, Me and Dupree'' and ''Bride Wars'' which have all surpassed the $100 million mark at the global box office.

Is Kate Hudson Popular?

Kate Hudson has not starred in a ridiculous amount of successful films (or films in general) but she has proven to be competent as actress, bringing in the audiences. Not everyone likes Kate but there is no doubt that she has created a cushy niche, which has allowed her to star in films which pull in her fans with ease which has allowed her to gain a creditable amount of fame and success.

#4- Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez is an actress, singer and film producer who has surprised audiences at the cinemas with some of her entertaining performances in comedies and romcoms. After proving that she could handle the leading lady role in ''The Wedding Planner'' (2001), she then gained more leading lady roles in more romcoms which have turned her into a Hollywood success. Among Jennifer Lopez's most successful films commercially include ''Maid in Manhattan'' (2002), ''Monster-in-Law'' (2005) and ''Ice Age: Continental Drift'' (2012) which have all gained a worldwide gross over $100 Million.

Jennifer Lopez is a talented actress, singer and producer with multiple talents which have allowed her to amass a huge amount of fame and success in Hollywood. Jennifer Lopez is no different to the others already talked about previously on this list as she is also tight cast to romcoms and comedies.

Is Jennifer Lopez popular?

Jennifer Lopez has proven that she can bring audiences to the cinemas to watch her films as well as flock to her concerts to listen to her music which can only mean that she is popular, however due to her being tight cast, she will never become peoples favourite actress (in terms of talent).

Jennifer Lopez- Box Office Hits (worldwide gross)

#5- Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba is the typical actress with a small amount of talent who has been lucky enough to land some good roles in some great films. Jessica first broke out in success commercially in ''Honey'' (2003), which moved her onto bigger and better things as not long after she landed a role in the violent crime hit ''Sin City'' (2005). Then gaining a role in the superhero team action ''Fantastic Four'' (2005), which would later go on to have a sequel.

Among Jessica's most successful films commercially include ''Sin City'' (2005), ''Fantastic Four'' (2005), ''Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer'' (2007) and ''Valentine's Day (2010).

Is Jessica Alba popular?

There is no secret that Jessica Alba is not the greatest of actresses and certainly got the level of success which she has now through pure luck in gaining some good roles in some great films, but this hasn't stopped her from becoming quite a popular actress. It seems as though Jessica is remains an in work actress with plenty of films in the pipeline to contend with including a Sin City sequel (called ''Sin City: A Dame to Kill for'', 2014).

Jessica Alba- Box Office Hits (worldwide gross)

''Honey'' (2003) - $62 Million

''Sin City'' (2005) - $158 Million

#6- Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart has gone from being a child actress in ''Panic Room'' (2002) to being the leading lady in ''Twilight'' (2008) which went on to have a total of 5 in the series, each more successful that the last. Kristen's acting career has gone from one extreme to the next and with the recent success of the Twilight series Kristen earned in 2013 $25 Million (sourced from Forbes magazine), which isn't bad for an actress in their 20's.

Kristen Stewart is however tight cast as an actress which is due to her personality which comes across on screen as a turtle in their shell (rather than a butterfly strutting their stuff, showing the world what they can do). If this issue becomes less of a problem as the young actress matures, then she will be able to do a variety of roles as she is very talented in the field of acting.

Is Kristen Stewart popular?

Kristen Stewart has gained a large fan base from her time playing the role as Bella Swan in the hit fantasy romance film series ''Twilight'', but she has also gathered a lot of haters who believe she lacks character and talent on screen. Although in saying this, her earnings speak otherwise as she is one of the top earning actresses in Hollywood at the moment getting onto the top 10 earning actresses in 2013 list, which is quite impressive.

Kristen Stewart- Box Office Hits (worldwide gross)

''Panic Room'' (2002) - $196 Million

''Twilight'' (2008) - $392 Million

''The Twilight Saga: New Moon'' (2009) - $709 Million

''The Twilight Saga: Eclipse'' (2010) - $698 Million

''The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 (2011) - $712 Million

#7- Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson has made a name for herself in Hollywood with her face popping up in films across the border including ''Vicky Cristina Barcelona'' (2008), ''We Bought a Zoo'' (2011) and ''Marvel's The Avengers Assemble'' (2012). All of the films mentioned have gone on to be successful at the box office and in doing these more noteworthy films she has created a name for herself which allows her to take a leap into the bigger films (playing the leading lady).

Is Scarlett Johansson popular?

Scarlett Johansson as mentioned has made a name for herself in Hollywood, in gaining roles in great films, adding to them her talents as an actress. She has certainly gained her fans as an actress but like all actresses in the spot light, when there are fans, there are haters. Scarlett Johansson has gained her roles through her talent as an actress and it always feels as though her characters are contributing to the success of her films, which in my book makes her a good actress.

Scarlett Johansson- Box Office Hits (worldwide gross)

''The Horse Whisperer'' (1998) - $186 Million

''Lost in Translation'' (2003) - $119 Million

''The Island'' (2005) - $162 Million

#8- Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow first landed a successful role, when she starred in the film ''Seven'' (1995), starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, which went on the amass a whopping $327 million at the global box office. Gwyneth not long after won the role in ''A perfect Murder'' (1998), ''Shakespeare in Love'' (1998) and ''The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), which all went on to gross more than $100 million at the global box office.

However after ''The Talented Mr. Ripley'' which was released into cinemas in 1999, Gwyneth went through a bit of a dry spot, struggling to get into successful films as they either flopped or became moderately successful at the box office. Lucky in 2009, Gwyneth won the role as Pepper Potts in ''Iron Man'' which wowed audiences and critics gathering a massive $585 million at the global box office. Since ''Iron Man'' however Gwyneth has only met success in ''Iron Man 2'' (2010), ''Contagion'' (2011) and ''Iron Man 3'' (2013).

Is Gwyneth Paltrow popular?

It is difficult to answer the question, whether Gwyneth is popular or not as she was a strong suited actress for the role as Pepper Potts in ''Iron Man'', which has garnered her more popularity than she has ever had before (also fame). But whether she is that popular outside of the 'Iron Man' fans circle I'm not quite sure!

Gwyneth Paltrow- Box Office Hits (worldwide gross)

#9- Katherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl has become quite well known in Hollywood since she starred in the box office success film ''Knocked Up'' (2007), starring Seth Rogen which had a $30 million budget and made $219 million at the global box office. This then led Katherine onto more romcoms which has become her strong suit (however leaves her tight cast) starring in such films as ''27 Dresses'', ''The Ugly Truth'' and ''One For the Money''.

Katherine Heigl has starred in plenty of romcoms in the past few years, some better than others but has she done enough to earn earn the respect of audiences to gain a strong fan base which is willing to watch all of her films (bad and good)!

Is Katherine Heigl popular?

Katherine Heigl has built a reputation as the strong lady on screen and apparently off screen, being known as the lady not be messed with! Although I feel this has not affected her popularity as she seems to have a fair amount of popularity among chick flick fans but has also garnered a lot of haters along the way.

Katherine Heigl- Box Office Hits (worldwide gross)

''Knocked Up'' (2007) - $219 Million

''27 Dresses'' (2008) - $160 Million

#10- Megan Fox

Megan Fox is possibly the most controversial actress on this list as there is such a large argument which is constantly happening, as to whether or not Megan Fox is a good actress or not. Other than the two Transformers films which Megan has starred in, she hasn't had any noteworthy performances worth mentioning. Megan as previously mentioned starred in two of the biggest box offices successes of all time including ''Transformers'' (2007) which had a budget of $150 million and made $709 million at the global box office. The other film is the ''Transformers'' sequel ''Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'' (2009) which had a production budget of $200 million and made $836 million at the global box office.

Is Megan Fox popular?

Megan Fox has become one of the most hated actresses in Hollywood at the moment, close behind Paris Hilton as she has starred in so many bad films. Other haters generally dislike Megan Fox as they believe she is incapable of acting and only gets any Hollywood attention at all due to her having starred in the Transformers films.

      Hey Fred Arnold,

Thank you for posting a comment, I agree an ugly personality creates ugly people. I also heard about Megan Fox's attitude towards Michael Bay and she really should have been more respectful. At the end of the day Michael Bay made Megan Fox a star in Hollywood. Don't bite the hand that feeds you! Clearly this didn't come to mind when Megan Fox was smashing on Bay's work.

I honestly don't have issues with actors or actresses until something comes up which tips you off to their actual personality. Like Megan Fox and her attitude with Bay when filming Transformers. Ugly people are ugly people.
