Inception

Inception is a staple of the mind-bending movie industry. This film features Leonardo DiCaprio as Cobb, a thief that steals corporate secrets through dream-sharing. Cobb is soon given the task of dream-stealing, planting the ideas of another into the target's subconscious. The ensemble cast also features Joesph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page, best known for her role in 2007 film Juno. Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Interstellar's writer, this film encapsulates everything a person could want for an evening of mind-altering suspense and cliff-hangers.

James Cameron's 2009 film, Avatar, includes breath-taking cinematography coupled with the complex theme of civility. Sam Worthington stars as Jake Sully, a paraplegic Marine who's task is to infiltrate the distance planet of Pandora for their natural resources. He enters their world as an Avatar and soon develops bonds with the Na'vi tribe, especially the beautiful Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana. He must choose a side - saving Pandora, or exploiting the planet for all it's worth while decimating a population.

Armageddon

An asteroid the size of Texas is hurtling itself towards Earth, projected to hit and destroy the planet in 18 days. Bruce Willis stars as Harry Stamper, an oil-driller who is put in command of the mission to stop the asteroid from decimating the world. He assembles a group of miss-fit drillers and geologists to save the planet and send into space to avoid this collision. Directed by Michael Bay, and starring Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler, Steve Buscemi and Ben Affleck, Armageddon is for fans of space-exploration, the underdog story and the lover of all sad films.

Edge of Tomorrow

A 2014 release starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, Edge of Tomorrow follows Major Cage as he is thrown into the battle against a new alien race that has attached Earth. Within minutes of entering combat, Cage is unceremoniously killed. His fight does not end there, however, as he is thrown into a time-loop reminiscent of both Groundhog Day and Interstellar, where he must relive the death over and over again.

Dallas Buyers Club

Winning 76 awards, including Best Actor (Matthew McConnaughey) and Best Supporting Actor (Jared Leto) this 2013 block-buster follows the true-story of Ron Woodruff, a hustler and electrician who gets AIDS in 1985 Dallas. During this time, AIDS was surrounded by much stigma and little was known about the disease. Ron Woodruff is at first reluctant to come to terms with the illness, but soon realizes he must face the truth. After some research into successful clinical drugs, he discovers AZT, a beacon of hope that is still in clinical trials and denied to Woodruff. This doesn't stop him from obtaining the drug and setting aside his differences with the LGBT community to campaign for the fight to end AIDS. This film contains phenomenal acting from Matthew McConnaughey in a role that is, if not even with, above that of Cooper in Interstellar.

Prometheus

Set in a distant year, Prometheus involves the same themes of space discovery and search for extra-terrestrials as Interstellar. This 2012 film stars Noomi Rapace, as Elizabeth Shaw, as well as Charlize Tharon. When a group of explorers is sent to a distant planet to find evidence of life, they soon realize not all of them are there for the same reason. As discontent emerges, these explorers begin a fight for survival on a very faraway planet in a faraway time.

Total Recall

Both the 1990 and 2012 film, deals with the idea of virtual vacations and virtual implantation of memory. Similar to Inception in its endeavor of mind-bending pursuits and infiltration of subconscious, the 1990 original features Arnold Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid. Quaid is takes a trip to Rekall Inc. when he is haunting by the reoccurring dream of his trip to Mars. Things take a turn for the worse as he begins to unravel the life of a secret agent. Set in the distant future, this movie forces viewers to question the power of technology and the human subconscious.

Gravity

Sandra Bullock stars in this 2013 Oscar winning film - Gravity. Playing the role of medical engineer and first time space explorer, Bullock's character Ryan Stone, is forced to survive in space as a result of a catastrophic collision which leaves her adrift. She must discover a way to return home as she is faced with obstacle after obstacle. Stone is haunted of her life back home in the same manner that Cooper must face during the facts of relativity. Both films feature accurate principals of astrophysics and the themes of isolation and meaning of family.

Fight Club

This 1999 film featuring Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden is a must-watch for all movie-watchers. Tyler Durden is an insomniac, going through the endless motions of a hum-drum life when he meets a soap salesman who he quickly becomes best friends with. The two soon realize the joys of fighting and start underground "fight clubs" as a form of therapy. Before the friends realize it, the idea spreads and men are lining up to form a group of loyal followers to the pals, eager to please and partake in any trouble deemed necessary. As Tyler spirals in and out of consciousness the viewer is sent on a rattling journey of the what is real and what is fake.

Billy Bob Thornton stars as Charles Farmer, an Air Force veteran with not only a farm but a rocket. He dreamt of one day becoming an astronaut but was forced to save the family farm after his father passed. He is soon put under FBI watch when he attempts to buy rocket fuel. He must face the daunting decision of his family farm and his dream of space. Astronaut Farmer deals with the issues of past dreams that never seem to go away.
