Updated on April 1, 2018

A guy who loves music & the power of it. Music can create moods, console souls, uplift spirits, & define generations. What's not to love?

Music Helps Make the Mood

I was feeling pretty good driving down the road today with summer just around the corner and some sunshine in the sky. Winter is always a downer for me so when this time of year rolls around I can't wait to roll the windows down and crank the music up.

While Ohio weather only permitted a slight cracking of the window today, the music was definitely cranked up and this playlist had me feeling like dancing away the winter blues and sharing it with everyone.

Though I thought about sharing a video of my super duper driver's seat dance moves and sweet steering wheel bass slaps, it could have been incriminating so I decided to share 10 songs on my playlist that put me in a pretty darn good mood with you instead.

For your entertainment I've provided some videos, thoughts on the songs and artists, as well as some interesting facts, polls, and quizzes to interact with. I've even offered some bonus tracks by each artist that you might want to consider adding to your own "Good Mood" playlists. That's like buy one get one free only better because it's all free.

Turning A Frown "Upside Down" with Jack Johnson

I like to compare getting into a good mood to getting warm. It's better if you don't rush into it. Sometimes in order to feel better we need to acknowledge that there is a struggle. Large or small, addressing the elephant in the room will help separate us from the struggle for a bit and allow a good mood feeling to set in.

Jack Johnson's "Upside Down" is a song that does that in a very subtle way and then follows it up by reminding you that it's not impossible to overcome if you don't waste time listening to doubt.

Bonus song by Jack Johnson - "Never Know"

I could have probably interchanged these two songs but a coin flip had me feature Upside Down instead.

Andy Grammar's Latest Hit Can Help "Give Love" Through Music

Now that we've acknowledged struggle and change, let's remind ourselves that we aren't going to be beaten by it. While giving love seems to be less popular than slinging mud these days, Andy Grammar's new hit "Give Love" reminds us how good it can feel to spread love. So let your hair down, give this track a spin, and see for yourself. Do you have a little love to spare?

Bonus Track by Andy Grammar - "Keep Your Head Up"

This one goes real well with the former with similar sound and feel.

Andy Grammar - "Give Love"

"My ultimate goal is to try to be real. It just so happens that I'm usually more happy than sad when I'm writing. And in general I think that life is pretty great, and it's cool to be here, so that comes through in my music. I don't have a dismal outlook, but I don't aim to make positive music. It's just what I am."

— Andy Grammer

Mr. A to Z Is on My Radio Dial

Now let's just get a little silly with this next one because when Jason Mraz decides he's going to perk up the audience with some quick, witty lyrics and fun guitar licks, he don't mess around.

From the album "Waiting for My Rocket to Come", "Curbside Prophet" is a free spirited song sporting a little banjo and a little harmonica that when combined with a fun, pop-rap lyric is almost impossible to not feel a little better about things.

Bonus Track by Jason Mraz - "Wordplay"

You like good lyrical word play? This one's title says it all while keeping the good vibe goin'.

"Summertime" and Sun - Recipe for a Good Mood

By now I think now we should be feeling a bit more even keel and ready to start moving the needle towards a party level good mood. I couldn't think of a better place to start phase two of the feel good process than with The Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith, and his melodic and good mood inspiring jam "Summertime".

Though released on their album "Homebase" in July of 1991, this song has never gotten old when it comes to kickin' off summer. I might tuck it away in the off season but when those first beams of summer sun start hitting my face, I can turn this on and feel better about the day almost instantaneously. Maybe it's the nostalgia?

Bonus Track by Will Smith - "Could You Love Me"

If you like the smooth sound of "Summertime" you may enjoy giving this track a spin.

Being Naughty "Feels Good" Sometimes

Hear me out. Naughty by Nature brings the good vibe with this one and the music makes a nice chaser after our last song.

Unlike OPP where the "feel good" is there but the message isn't exactly conducive to what I'm trying to do here, "Feels Good" has a much more friendly undertone. If you're not worried by "a damn thang" then feeling good is much easier than tending to the stress that could stem from messing around with OPP.

Bonus Track by Naughty by Nature - "Jamboree"

A little jam, a little jam, a little jam jam for your "boree".

"Everyday above ground is a great day, remember that."

To be in a good mood it's important to remember the things we're grateful for. Being alive is definitely one of them in my book and the line "Everyday above ground is a great day, remember that" is there to remind me of that very thing.

"Time of Our Lives", is to me, a song about being able to set aside the challenges of everyday life long enough to enjoy it sometimes. Throw a party. Dance. Make love. Whatever floats your boat...just let whatever it is go for a bit and give yourself a chance to have a good time because we've just arrived at the party.

Bonus Track by Pitbull - "Feel This Moment" ft. Christina Aguilera

Though I like other Pitbull songs better, I thought this bonus track had the most positive vibe.

The Fast Paced Beats and Swift Lyrics of Heavy D Helps Get the Head Bobbin'

R.I.P. Dwight Errington Myers (a.k.a. Heavy D). A moment please....

Ok enough of that because if Heavy were here right now I'm pretty sure he'd rather have us shakin' and movin' rather than sitting quietly. This one is a bit of a throw back. Alright, more for some than others I suppose but the feeling you get from this 90's hit hasn't lost its' touch over the years. Even my kids have this one added to their playlist and if you saw that list, it's not easy to get anything pre-2010 on their.

We should be just about in full swing good time mode now so don't stop the rock.

Bonus Track by Heavy D & The Boyz - "Nuttin' But Love"

Though I can't necessarily call it a feel good-er since it's about a gold digger, it's still a pretty good song with more of Heavy's tricky lyrical style and a good beat.

Heavy D & The Boys ft. Aaron Hall - "Now That We Found Love"

A Good Mood With "Sugar" On Top

A little sweetness in our life can't hurt our good mood can it?

I love the upbeat feel to the music in Maroon 5's "Sugar" mixed with Levine's ability to write some intensely sensual lyrics. When I hear it, I think it's easy to lose sight of just how sexy it is because of the bubbly vibe to it but hey, who says sexy can't put you in a good mood right?

Bonus Track by Maroon 5 - "Animals"

If you agree that sexy can help bring about a better mood then you'll be smiling ear to ear after listening to "Animals"

Maroon 5 - "Sugar"

"I picked up a guitar and that was it. I fell so madly in love with it, it's all I did".

— Adam Levine

"Happy" to Be in a Good Mood

I'm pulling out the big guns here for phase 3, complete elation, and if we're going to listen to songs that create a better mood then how on this green earth could we leave out "Happy" by Pharrell Williams?

Having lost to "Let it Go" from the Frozen soundtrack for an Academy Award, I almost put it on the list instead of "Happy" but... Actually, no. No I didn't. Not even for a second.

This fun music video depicts how music can grab anyone at anytime and put a little bounce in their step.

Bonus Track - "Feels" by Calvin Harris ft. Pharrell Williams and Katy Perry

I know it's not Pharrell's song but he's largely present and its got a real catchy "feel" to it.

Pharrell Williams - "Happy"

Did you know...

...the song "Happy" was originally written by Pharrell Williams for CeeLo Green?

Justin Timberlake - My Secret Feel Good Weapon

Having already reached maximum good mood mode, this one is designed to blow the meter. Remember me telling you about my dance moves? Well I'm pretty sure they're similar to some of those you might find in this video for "Can't Stop the Feeling" and no, not the ones Justin is putting down.

This song was released in the spring of 2016 and after hearing it for the 134th time, approximately, I still can't help but at least tap my foot even when I'm in the worst of moods. This video depicts exactly what I saw in my mind the first time I heard it on the radio...that everyone of every walk would probably enjoy this song and at least for a moment have their spirits lifted a bit.

Bonus Track by Justin Timberlake - "Suit and Tie"

Wanna feel like a million bucks? That's what this bonus track does for me.

Music is Bad Mood Medicine

Well I hope you've enjoyed this one as much as I have. I love listening to and sharing music with people, especially the feel good stuff. I'm excited to keep the mood going with other genres here in the near future because my playlists are long and my love of good mood music is not limited to that of pop and hip hop. Stay tuned!
