They say that success in the entertainment industry is fleeting – that even though many have enjoyed lengthy careers, the profession itself is designed to be under a time limit. Celebrities can’t rely on their careers forever, as their fame will eventually fade. Korean Celebrities know this, so many of them have used their earnings from the entertainment industry to start their own businesses. While majority of them don’t want to publicize their involvement with their businesses, here are 10 who have proudly revealed their own equally popular businesses:

#1 - Jessica Jung

The U.S.-born Jessica Jung is a former member of Girls’ Generation, serving as one of its most popular members as she seems to have an almost equal number of fans and detractors. She was first discovered by an S.M. Entertainment talent scout while shopping at a mall and invited to audition along with her younger sister Krystal (who is now part of the Korean girl group F(X.) Girls Generation officially debuted in 2007.

In 2014, Jessica and S.M. Entertainment on different occasions formally announced Jessica’s removal from the group in order to pursue a solo career. While the reasons for her leaving is a complex subject that is better discussed through another article, Jessica is still under S.M. Entertainment so we can assume that her relationship with her label isn’t bad.

Nature of the Business

Originally launched in August 2014 under the name Blanc, the now named Blanc & Eclare is a fashion line that specializes in modern-classic clothing and accessories inspired by Jessica’s own line. #2 - Seungri of Big Bang

Seungri is the youngest member of the boy band Big Bang, and is known for his dance skills. He first caught national attention when he joined the reality television series Let’s Cokeplay: Mnet Battle Shinhwa, which has Shinhwa attempting to create a new boy band out of the contestants. Seungri was eliminated because even though he was one of the best dancers, his vocal skills were found lacking.

Seungri has publicly stated that he wants a stable source of income outside of being an idol, so he started a business that makes full use of his talents as a dancer – he opened several dance schools in Korea under the name Joy Dance – Plug In Music Academy. The academies are also known as Seungri Academy, and provide training for both singing and dancing. His school has been attended by other famous Kpop idols, including 2NE1’s Minzy, KARA’s Goo Hara, EXID’s Hyerin, and others. The academy has branches in Gwangju, Daejun, Mokpo, and Seoul.

Celebrity Background

LeeSsang is a hip-hop duo consisting of Kang Hee-Gun and Gil Seong-joon. The group has been around since 2002 and has produced 8 albums and numerous #1 hits. LeeSssang is revered by fans because they managed to reach mainstream success even though they did not go through the conventional training that other K-pop artists go through. Additionally, they exercise full creative control of their career by writing and producing the songs themselves, as well as directing their own music videos.

Rain is a singer-songwriter, producer, dancer, and actor with a career t hat spans six Korean albums, one Japanese album, numerous tours around the world, and an acting career that landed him multitudes of roles in South Korea and a couple in Hollywood, such as Speed Racer and Ninja Assassin.

While he has no complaints against his former management, JYP Entertainment, Rain wanted to expand his horizons and exercise full control over his career so he parted ways (on good terms) with JYP Entertainment and formed his own company, J. Tune Entertainment. The company has since been merged with JYP Entertainment, after Rain sold his shares to JYP.

Besides the music label, Rain also started his clothing line, Six to Five (named after his birthday, 6/25.) Rain has an active role in Six to Five, serving as designer and model for the brand. Rain also has a real estate business.

Andy founded a management company in 2007 as New Dream Entertainment, before changing its name to the more popular TOP Media. It is responsible for debuting the male poop duo Jumper, which managed to release two singles before disbanding. #6 - Ok Taecyeon of 2PM

OK Taecyeon is arguably one of the most popular members of the boyband 2PM, where he serves as the main rapper. The boy band is known in South Korea for catering to a much more mature audience due to their more aggressive and sexual style, compared to other boybands that target the teenage market. OK Taecyeon also did a lot of work as an actor, particularly in the drama Cinderella’s Sister and the internationally acclaimed Dream High.

One of OK Taecyeon’s trademark quirks is to draw large headed, long bodied cats, which are frequently incorporated into his signatures and autographs. He and his fans dubbed the drawings as “OKCats,” in reference to his name. Even when he’s still just an artist, Jay Park has already exhibited a knack for PR and entrepreneurship, which culminated in his founding of AOMG, an independent record label that specializes in Hip Hop.
