10 Reasons why Kevin Spacey is the Best Male Actor Alive Today

Updated on May 25, 2015

#10 Give him a role, he will deliver.

One of the best things about Kevin Spacey is the fact that he can make you believe that he isn't even an actor playing a character. I cannot remember how many times I have seen Spacey in a role and completely believed he was that person! He is remarkable and very convincing with whatever he is playing have it be a crazy serial killer in Se7en (1995) , a sexy swinger in Consenting Adults (1992) , or a funny soldier in The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009). Part of what makes a good Actor is their flexibility, their ability to cross genres and perform successfully in each one. And boy does Spacey have that down pat.

#9 There isn't anything he hasn't done.

Movies, freeways of visual information entering our mind at hours at a time with in depth story lines and character traits, check it off the list. Television, a weekly presentation of a proceeding plot with essential relationships, check it off the list. Theatre, a live performance of a peculiar story fit for an audience, well, you get the point. The title said it all, there isn't anything this man hasn't done. He's been on TV, he's done his fair share of movies, he's starred on broadway, documentaries, short films, voice-overs, you name it, this guy has truly done it all. Spacey even went as far as to play a video game character, Twice! As if he was just trying to finish out the resume.

#8 As if acting just wasn't enough.

Sometimes being a good actor also means that you know the ins and outs of a few other things around set. Not only can Spacey deliver a hair-raising performance on screen, he can off screen too. That's right, bring in the producer. Spacey has gotten his hands in a little bit of everything and has produced over 30 works of art, ranging from a big time movie such as 21 (2008) to episodes of House of Cards (2013-2015). Not only does he produce these great pieces of work, but a lot of the time he's starring in them too. What this man has to offer seems almost infinite.

#7 Grab that magazine, Spacey's on the cover.

Stopping at the magazine isle at the book store is sure to remind you of Spacey. That's because he's been on quite a few covers, and has been featured in far more than that I am sure. If he is becoming the face of these magazines he must be doing something right, right? Below are just a few covers Spacey's unique look was placed on.

#6 Just talk to me, I want to hear your voice.

If there is one guy in showbiz that is identifiable by the sound of his voice its Mr. Kevin Spacey himself. This man emits from his voice box, a drawling and very distinct voice recognizable by nearly anyone who has heard it before. It literally pulls you into the character and gives you a sense of peace. This is the kind of voice that we all want to hear over a Discovery Channel documentary about the universe, or even the one we want to hire to read bedtime stories to our kids at night so we can sleep peacefully for once. More dialogue driven parts for Mr.Spacey please!

#5 His Reputable Commitment

As an actor you have to be willing to go the extra mile a lot of times in order to truly commit to a portrayal. What will separate a great actor from a good one is their desire to go above and beyond for a part they are playing. I Introduce to you once again Kevin Spacey ladies and gentleman, if he is given a role to play he will do everything in his power to make sure he does it right. Spacey shaved his head to play John Doe in se7en (1995) and again in 2006 when he played Lex Luther in Superman Returns. Studying certain people, practicing an accent, watching musical performances, he does it all. If that doesn't say commitment I don't know what does.

#4 We need a riveting performance, call Spacey.

Finding someone you can count on is precisely the point of casting, you have to find and decide on someone who is going to give the best performance for the character at hand. Here is where Spacey really shines, he's given some amazing performances, unforgettable ones, and that is why he is relied on time and time again by directors to fulfill their visions. When directors picture a character and traits and actions that go along with them, they know if they give the part to Spacey he's sure to do anything but disappoint. And let's be honest, we all love when he plays that sinister bad guy sending chills down our spines.

#3 Lets get to the Accreditations

Sometimes you need to measure how good a man or woman is at something, not by viewing them do this thing, but by the accolades they have acquired. Spacey is everything but lacking in this category, not only can we watch him kill a performance but we can also see him featured on lists of best actors, best villains, best performances, etc. Entertainment Weekly listed Spacey on their list of 25 best actors, he was GQ's man of the year in theatre in 1999, and Telegraph put him #10 on their list of the 100 most powerful people in the British culture. Empire magazine, which he covered for multiple times, gave Spacey the title of "Greatest actor of the Decade". You go Spacey.

#2 Bring on the Nominations

One way Actors are rewarded for their work (Other than sizable amounts of money of course) is those nominations and awards we hear about in movie trailers. "Starring Oscar nominated..." we have all heard it and if Spacey is a part of the cast you can bet you're hearing it. Spacey has been nominated for an astounding 50 awards over his career and as if that wasn't incredible enough he's won the majority of those nominations. Scattered through this impressive list of noms are best actor, supporting actor, voice-over performance, outstanding producer, and more. There is even a grammy nomination mixed in, as well as a Tony nomination and win for broadway as best actor in Lost in Yonkers (1991). Now, let's get to the #1 reason shall we?

#1 I'd like to thank the academy...

The greatest achievement of all when it comes to being an actor in Film, is an Oscar. A lot of actors will snag a Golden Globe and a few Oscar nods but never a win, such as Leo DiCaprio. Well, Spacey hoists both atop his trophy case. Not only has he won one of each, he's had the pleasure of accepting two Oscars. A feat that only 39 actors and actresses can say they too have accomplished. Beyond that Spacey is 2 for 2 when it comes to Oscars,a triumph he shares with only 6 other actors. Spacey has also appeared in three films that have been nominated for best picture. Kevin spacey is in the definition of what it means to be a great actor, he continues to surprise us and keep us on the edge of our seats with his performances, and he does not disappoint. I truly believe, according to the information above, that he is the greatest male actor alive today.

I will end this lengthy list with a personal quote from the man himself,a poll so I can see where you guy's stand on the issue, and a cool YouTube video I came across highlighting his top performances by "". Thank you for reading! (For someone to be named the best is just an opinion and this is mine we all have different one's so do not hold me to this. All of my information and facts were found through my personal knowledge of the actor or from

"There is no prize, out there. The only prize is, this one, and what you feel and what you want to accomplish. And if you can, as you start out, these what could be lean years or could be fat years. I feel that I very often watch a lot of young people sort of meander around without any idea about why they're doing what they're doing. I mean to want and to be ambitious and to want to be successful, is not enough. That's just desire. To know what you want, to understand why you're doing it, to dedicate every breath in your body to achieve... If you feel you have something to give, if you feel that your particular talent is worth developing, is worth caring for then there's nothing you can't achieve." - Kevin Spacey

Prove Me Wrong

In your opinion who is the best male actor still alive today?
