A film buff who enjoys watching a range of different films from funny rom coms to intense thrillers.

Meeting a psychopath in person is terrifying. But watching one on a big screen is fascinating, and I’m one of those people who are an avid fan.

The thrill, suspense, and mystery are a few factors that I love the most in Dexter. It’s not boring, and there are no dull moments. It’s not predictable, making it one of my favorites ever.

But for those who haven’t watched Dexter, it is a crime, mystery and drama television series that aired on Showtime for 8 seasons from 2006 to 2013.

The Series featured the life of Dexter Morgan, a blood splatter analysis by day. At night, he was a serial killer whose job is to hunt hardcore criminals.

When it ended in 2013 (with his full-on lumberjack beard look) I was quite disappointed because I thought I would never watch another impressive show again. But the good news is that I found these world-class creations.

TV Shows Similar to Dexter

Shows Similar to Dexter

  1. Hannibal
  2. Sons of Anarchy
  3. The Blacklist
  4. Six Feet Under
  5. The Mentalist
  6. Castle
  7. Criminal Minds
  8. Prison Break
  9. Arrow
  10. The Americans

#1 Hannibal

Who would have ever thought that other shows could be as intense as Dexter? Hannibal makes it possible. It is a television series that focuses on different genres, like horror.

Hannibal is based on specific characters in the book Red Dragon (1981). It is about the relationship between Dr. Hannibal Lecter (a cannibalistic serial killer and a forensic psychiatrist) and Will Graham (an FBI special investigator).

Hannibal stars include Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy, where the former appeared in Rihanna’s music video called Bitch Better Have My Money in 2015.

#2 Sons of Anarchy

Another show that’s similar to Dexter is the Sons of Anarchy. Known as a crime drama television series, Dexter aired on FX for 7 seasons from 2008 to 2014.

While Hannibal is about a doctor by day and a serial killer by night, the series is about the members of the sons of an anarchy motorcycle club. It specifically focuses on Jax Teller who tries to balance his life as a new dad and a member of the organization.

It stars Charlie Hunnam, who worked as King Arthur in the King Arthur: Legend of the Sword in 2017. He also acted as Precy Fawcett in the Lost City of Z in 2016.

Although it ended on December 9, 2014, it is still streaming on Netflix. It is also available in other online streaming sites. Just look for a platform that has a reliable reputation.

#3 The Blacklist

After watching Sons of Anarchy, what’s next? The Blacklist should be included in your list. As with Hannibal and Sons of Anarchy, the Blacklist is also a crime thriller television series. Aired on NBC, it premiered on September 23, 2013.

It tells the story of Raymond Reddington, who is a seasoned criminal who has escaped justice for many decades. He also agrees to turn himself in with one condition. He wants to work as a rookie FBI profiler with Elizabeth Keen.

The Blacklist features Megan Boone, James Spader, and other skilled actors. Spader is such a versatile and dedicated actor for me. I also watched him on Boston Legal as Alan Shore from 2004 to 2008, and he was really impressive.

As with Sons of Anarchy, The Blacklist is also available on Netflix. What I like about this show is that its story is unique and interesting. The actors also gave justice to their characters. I also found the plot amusing. I salute the directors and the entire team for such a wonderful piece.

#4 Six Feet Under

Have you been watching action-packed shows for 2 years? Have you been on the lookout for something different? Then, don’t look further than Six Feet Under. It is a comedy television series, in which you can relate to easily.

Aired on HBO from June 3, 2001, to August 21, 2005, Six Feet Under still creates a buzz among people of all ages. It’s no wonder because it is of the highest quality. From the characters to the story, it has them all. Whether you’re in search of a balance of comedy and drama, it will be your best shot.

Six Feet Under is about the personal and professional lives of the Fisher family who runs a funeral home business. It also stars Lauren Ambrose, Michael C. Hall, Frances Conroy, and Peter Krause. They were a talented and experienced actors for me.

#5 The Mentalist

The Mentalist, just like Dexter, has unique means for solving murder cases. Whereas Dexter is considered an expert in blood spatter, Patrick Jane is far different. He is just a psychic, wherein he uses that to work in the California Bureau of Investigation as an independent consultant.

Usually, a crime-solving show has dark settings. But The Mentalist is quite funny and bizarre. It features a sunny and California beach lifestyle, making it a great show to watch today.

Solving murders, in reality, is a bit terrifying. But watching Patrick Jane does it with ease would change your perspectives. Although his job sounds complicated, he makes it as easy as eating a pie.

Aside from Patrick Jane, I also love the other characters. They are amazing and effective. As a fan, I felt different emotions. From drama, horror to action, I found all important elements in a TV show. For those who are in search of a feature-packed show, the Mentalist won’t disappoint you.

#6 Castle

Castle is another show that’s similar to Dexter. Not only he commits murders, but he also writes about them. As a writer, his skills are superb. It helps him create and develop solutions for the police department in New York.

As a show, it begins when a killer employs Castle books to commit a heinous crime. Due to his capabilities, the cop brings him as an expert consultant, wherein he finds his love interest.

Castle can secure a full-time consultancy position because of his connections with the mayor. Aside from his wit, Beckett’s edginess and sass are what makes the entire show fun to watch.

More than the crimes, Castle is packed with humor. At some moment, you would notice yourself laughing.

#7 Criminal Minds

Criminal Minds is another interesting show you should give a shot. Its plot usually revolves from a Behavioral Analysis Unit team, a subsection of FBI. They travel to police stations to further investigate serial killings and other heinous crimes

The team utilizes its capabilities in profiling to find and apprehend criminals. Unlike other options, Criminal Minds have a combination of detective work, statistics, and psychology. It features many serial killers, and the actors can portray the characters well. They are so professional and flexible, encouraging me to watch the show more than twice already.

#8 Prison Break

You probably are not fond of cliffhangers and crime shows. But when you watch Prison Break, your perspective will change possibly. Like other big shows out there, Prison Break has interesting elements you shouldn’t miss.

It is a story of Lincoln Burrows and Michael Schofield who go from one prison to another. Despite the complexity, they can escape it with convenience. They have the best cliffhangers, making it one of the best shows around the globe.

Yes, there are many trends in the industry. Even though it ended years ago, it is still exciting to watch. Its suspense, thrill, drama, and horror are realistic and impressive. For those who are craving for the intense show, Prison Break is good to go.

#9 Arrow

When it comes to a dual life, Arrow is a great epitome to watch. After being lost at sea, Oliver Queen returns home. From there, he has become Arrow who is a vigilante hero whose job is to eliminate the corrupt.

An arrow is a normal man by day. Then, he transformed into a different person by night. Armed with a bow and other tech gadgets, he’s like Batman. As soon as he survives from an uncharted island, he started hunting down abusive men and women.

Arrow has different seasons. Its 3 and 4 narrates the ups and downs of the main character. You can skip that and watch season 5 without losing track of all important events.

#10 The Americans

Another crime and horror show is Americans. As an excellent substitute for Dexter, it has better-written story with a Cold War vibe in the 1980s.

The Americans tell the life of Elizabeth and Phillip Jennings who work as KGB spies. They have two children who are at first don’t know their parent’s identity. While the arranged marriage is part of their cover, it has become more genuine and passionate as time goes by.

As the Cold War has been prevalent, their marriage has been tested. In spite of that, their bond gets stronger. Aside from being a spy, Philip handled tracking foreign agents.
