10 Songs about the Rain - 80s Edition
1. Rain - The Cult
Started the list with this classic because it's from one of my favorite albums ever. Energetic 80s gothic rock.
"Hot sticky scenes you know what I mean. Like the desert sun that burns my skin"
2. Purple Rain - Prince
Heartbreaking lyrics, powerful and beautiful. One of my favorite Prince songs ever, also the title from the 1984 movie he starred in.
"I never wanted to be your weekend lover, I only wanted to be some kind of friend"
3. Here Comes the Rain Again - The Eurythmics
I always think of the mysterious video when I think of this song. The song has a melancholy but energetic and poetic sound. Annie Lennox has an incredible vocal range.
"Here comes the rain again, falling on my head like a new emotion"
4. The Rain - Oran Juice Jones
This tale of love gone wrong was watched on video so many times by me and my friends in 1986. The rant at the end is clever and classic.
"I saw you (and him) walking in the rain, you were holding hands and I'll never be the same"
5. I like Chopin (Rainy Days) - Gazebo
This may not be the best known on my list for North America, but it is a beautiful melody by Italian pop singer Gazebo.
"Remember that piano, so delightful, unusual"
6. South Central Rain - REM
REM is one of my favorite all time bands. This song still moves me with it's melancholy and the glorious voice of Michael Stipe.
"Did you never call, I waited for your call. These rivers of suggestion are driving me away"
7. I Love a Rainy Night - Eddie Rabbitt
This is the most upbeat and positive song about the rain on this list. From the very early 80s in elementary school, I remember it as being a big hit on AM radio. I added this to many a playlist since.
"Well I love a rainy night, such a beautiful sight"
8. Blame it on the Rain - Milli Vanilli
Upbeat and likable pop song about casually blaming the rain for our woes by the one album wonders of the late 80s.
"Blame it on the rain, that was falling falling, blame it on the stars that did shine at night"
9. Mandolin Rain - Bruce Hornsby & the Range
This 1986 track has atmospheric lyrics and a nice mellow soft rock sound
"Listen to the mandolin rain, listen to the music on the lake. Listen to my heartbreak everytime she runs away"
10. Rain in the Summertime - The Alarm
I will close out my list with this one from 1987 that I had forgotten about for years. While not fitting for the rainy scene today in late winter, I look forward to a light rain this summer and I will play this song.
"I love to feel the rain in the summertime, I love to feel the rain on my face"
