10 of the Best: Rock Songs of all Time
I love all types of music. I can rock out to Aerosmith, then flip to The Spice Girls, and then over to Barry White. I like a mix, and I like variety. Remembering the old way of listening to one artist on one CD, I don't know how I did it. Getting a variety is definitely the best way of listening to music. Music tastes change, and what is popular in music changes. Music genres fade in and out of style. Rock still goes on, though. People are loyal to their rockers. Rock bands such as The Rolling Stones and K.I.S.S are still going strong. People still rock their Led Zeppelin t-shirts even though the band has been 'extinct' for over 30 years. So that's why rock. Rock is both constant and ever-changing, hard and soft, light and heavy. As much as rock continues to evolve, I still like that old-time Rock-N-Roll.
10. Space Oddity-David Bowie
He's a little out there, but there's no denying that David Bowie has incredible talent. This song is chilling, and a little sad, but it is easy on the ears. I think that most will agree, David Bowie and Space Oddity, and Major Tom, all deserve their spot on this list.
9. The Who-Baba O'Riley
Love.This.Song. I don't think anyone can argue that it's a great song. It might not be at the top of some people's lists, but it is on mine. This song has made it onto the soundtracks of countless movies, and it just is gritty and cool. 'Teenage Wasteland;' I think we all can relate. Maybe The Who were ahead of their time.
8. Magic Carpet Ride-Steppenwolf
Keep in mind that this is my list. I think this song is awesome. It surely would be on most people's top 100 list, but maybe not their top 10. When I think of this song, I think about....having a groovy time with Velma, Daphne, and Shaggy, and a certain Great Dane, but...it is just a great song! So, you might not have it on your list, but on mine, it is number 8. .
7. Free Bird....of Alabama-Lynyrd Skynyrd
I'm torn. Free Bird is a great song. People really like it. It's considered one of the best. However, I can't help myself from singing along every time I hear Sweet Home Alabama, and I'm from Ohio. It's fun. It's catchy. Which of these is cast at #7? I say both. It's a tie. Lynyrd Skynyrd is an awesome band with multiple hits, and so they get to have 2 songs on my list.
6. Another Brick in the Wall-Pink Floyd
Twas my class song. 'We don't need no education.' There's just something about having all of those kids standing up to the man that just gets to me. This is an excellent addition to the list. Pink Floyd has a number of gems in their repertoire, but this one stands out.
5. Light my Fire-The Doors
R.I.P. Jim Morrison. The Doors had many great hits, but this one is my favorite. As any self respecting rock group, they had their fair share of scandals, but that did not diminish their musicality. Disagree or Agree, this song lights my fire. Oh, yeah!
4. Bohemian Rhapsody-Queen
Here is where my list deviates from some of the more popular lists. I think many people enjoy the song, but would be unlikely to consider it for the list. I like it. It is a bit dark, but it is ever so fun.
3. Hotel California-The Eagles
For one year straight, this wonderful song woke me up way earlier than I wanted to be woken. My neighbor at the time, 14 years ago when I was 18, clearly was a fan. For a while, I didn't want to listen to it, but it is an intoxicating tune. The lyrics allude to places unseen. The guitar solos merited being placed on Guitar Hero, and they tend to stick with you. This song is placed in most Top 10 lists, but for me, it is on position three.
2. Satisfaction-The Rolling Stones
I'm sure some people will disagree, and hey, that's your right. These are my opinions. If you want to argue, write your own hub! This is a great song, regardless of where you would put it on the list. The Stones are an amazing group of rockers. Mick Jagger still has it after all these years. I'm a fan. This song is usually in the top 5 of most Top 10 lists.
1. Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeppelin
Many will agree; some will argue. I stand firm. Stairway to Heaven is the best song, EVER. There's no debate. The tragedy that was the death of John Bonham that ended Led Zeppelin is among the most depressing tragedies of all time. Right up there with Romeo and Juliet. The lyrics are so expertly crafted, and the music really moves me. It moves many people, since in most top 10 lists, Stairway is usually in the top 3.
I could have made this list so much longer. Honorable mentions include: One-U2, Dream On-Aerosmith, Kashmir-Led Zeppelin, Whole Lotta Love-Led Zeppelin, Welcome to the Jungle-Guns n Roses, American Pie-Don McLean, Born to be Wild-Steppenwolf, Born to Run-Springstein, My Generation-The Who, Go your own Way-Fleetwood Mac, Come Together-The Beatles. I'm sure that you all have many other songs you'd like to add to the list. Go ahead and let me know about them in the comments. I'll consider them.
