10 of the Most Awesome Disney Songs
Disney Music Genius
Several days ago, I was watching some YouTube videos and came across a parody using the song 'Be A Man' with a serious show. The result was funny and got me thinking about those old Disney days. I did a trip down memory lane and hunted down my top picks for the most awesome Disney songs. My favorite being the dark, Hellfire, sung by the true villain, Frollo of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. My picks are all from different Disney films and might bring back a memory or two for you. Read my squidoo and let me know what your favorite Disney song is!

Hellfire - The Hunchback of Notre Dame
My most favorite of all Disney songs! The movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of the darkest of all Disney films. As with many Disney films, it is a loosely based version of the true book. Still, for this movie Disney did not completely downplay the usual darkness in the tale as they have with so many others. I find Frollo to be one of the most fascinating of movie characters. He is a cruel man masquerading as a dealer of justice. When you are little, you do not fully understand Frollo's true obsession with Esmeralda. He is conflicted with a jealous lust for her. Instead of asking for help with his sin, he decides to either fully possess her or kill her. In his mind, she is the taunting sin dancing in the flames and he has is an innocent holy man not to be blamed for his own desires.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame in Film & Book
Like so many wonderful films, the Hunchback of Notre Dame is based off a book. Of course the Disney version has played around with many of the elements of the story but that is to be expected. The book is a fascinating read and I recommend giving it a try.
A Whole New World - Aladdin
How could anyone leave out this song? We all know it. Aladdin makes Jasmine so upset, he walks off the balcony only to be standing on his magic carpet. From there, the rest is history. Who wouldn't want to take a carpet ride through the clouds and across the world? I have seen the sphynx in Egypt and love the idea the Disney makers created as to why its nose is gone. This song is one of the reason we keep watching Disney movies over and over.
Own Aladdin (Two-Disc Platinum Edition)
Aladdin is one of the most famous and beloved of Disney films. The combination of humor, magic, and courage makes it a winner. Not to mention a wonderful soundtrack which captivates even us adults.
If you don't own the movie already then consider buying it. This is one Disney film worth sharing over and over.
A Girl Worth Fighting For - Mulan
This movie is the only one where a woman acts as the real heroine. She reverses the damsel in distress, going so far as to save her 'prince' from certain death. I love this song because it makes me think...poor Mulan. Having to hide your female body from hundreds of men, and now being asked about her choice for a woman to fight for!
Own Disney's Mulan on Two-Disc Edition
Mulan is one of the most fascinating of Disney films because it banishes all the female stereotypes. Instead of the delicate woman needing saving you have her being the hero. She does not choose the role but accepts it gracefully which makes you cheer her again and again. As the emperor of China says, "You don't meet a girl like that every dynasty."
Friends on The Other Side - The Princess and the Frog
I was pleasantly surprised after my roommate coaxed me into watching this movie. The usual tale takes on a major twist, ending up to be a charming and delightful film. And let's not forget the main villain, Dr. Facilier. At first, he seems like a harmless mischevious swindler, playing on people's insecurities for financial gain. In reality, he is a dark voodoo man with a intelligence and a lot of spite. I suppose that is why I like this song. He is such an energetic and devious man that it is entertaining just to see him work his magic.
The Princess and the Frog on Blu-Ray/DVD
I was extremely skeptical about this Disney film. In fact I did not see it until my college roommate was watching it and I had nothing else to do but join in. I was pleasantly surprised to discover all of my preconceived ideas were way off base. This Disney work is truly worth seeing but I would shy away from allowing small children to join in. Some parts could be scary.
Colors of the Wind - Pocohontas
When I was little, I was so enchanted by Pocohontas that I insisted on getting the Disney costume to be her for Halloween.I kept that costume for years, although sadly, I could no longer fit the top of it. No matter. I still love the movie and this song. Pocohontas is so stunning as she introduces the real world to John Smith. She runs through the forests without taking a breath, swims deep in the river's waters, and even the leaves swirl around her beauty. I had to include this not just for it's song but for the beauty around it.
Own Pocahontas Special Edition
I have been to the real Jamestown and seen the places where Pocahontas may have turned cartwheels for the settlers. The true Pocahontas was barely a teenager before she saved the life of John Smith. The true tale is different then the Disney version but Disney has done a wonderful job of combining music, a little romance, courage, and life into a film worth owning.
Be Prepared - Lion King
With all the princesses and romance Disney films, people tend to overlook The Lion King. Which is sad because Scar is one of the best villains of all time. He is wickedly cruel and extremely devious. The way he lays out his plans, amidst the smoke and darkness is chilling. He is planning to kill his own brother and nephew without a shed of remorse. Now that is a scary villain.
Own the Lion King Today and Enjoy 'Be Prepared'
In the era of Disney princesses the Lion King often falls by the wayside. This is sad because there are so many wonderful moments in the Lion King and the storyline is just as interesting as other Disney films. Give the Lion King another try and rediscover the Disney magic.
Strangers Like Me - Tarzan
I must admit that Tarzan is not one of my favorite Disney movies. The beginning is to sad for me and in a way the film is sad. Although there is a happy Disney ending of course. However, I do love this song. Maybe it's because of Phil Collins or maybe just because I love how you can see the gradual affection developing between Tarzan and Jane. My favorite part is Jane is upset because the bird she was sketching flies away before she could finish. So Tarzan takes her to a place where there are hundreds of them high up in the jungle.
Tarzan of the Apes. Strangers Like Me & Tarzan: The Disney Film
Tarzan is another of Disney's 'modified book to film' movies. You should really try reading the actual book and then rewatch the film. I have found doing this is an interesting way to understand both a little better.
Under the Sea - Little Mermaid
This year I was in Texas for Halloween going as a Samurai geisha and my friend/host was the Little Mermaid. She even had the long red mermaid hair we know so well. Everyone knows the Disney story (the real one is not quite the same). Ariel falls in love and longs for the impossible. To join her prince and live as a human, instead of a mermaid. This is Sebastatian's amazing, but failed, attempt to show her the wonders of the sea trump that of land. The music and animation are unmatched in this song making it one of Disney's most awesome.
The Little Mermaid
My older sister owned this Disney classic when we were young and when she moved out it was sad to see such a wonderful movie go. Now, of course, it is available on DVD/Blu-Ray so I can once again enjoy the magic.
Once Upon A Dream - Sleeping Beauty
I know this song is like nine minutes long and can be very slow. That does not matter because it is still one of Disney's most awesome songs. Done before CGI and computer animations, the film's backgrounds were all painstakingly painted and drawn by hand. They make the backdrop a magical and romantic place. Not to mention, she meets the man who she has met once upon a dream. He dances with her so delicately and you can see the love developing.
Sleeping Beauty is from the days where Disney animators had to painstakingly draw out each scene by hand. The process was long and tedious but the results are still stunning today. I believe the scenery alone makes this a film worth owning.
Tale as Old as Time - Beauty and the Beast
This comes from my sister's favorite movie of all time. The classic tale of a beast and a beauty. Their love breaks the spell upon him and makes him human once again. Before that happens, there is this scene of course. I've been told this was one of Disney's first use of CGI animation in a movie. I love the song and Belle's beautiful dress. You can tell something magical is happening.
Beauty and the Beast in Disney & Story
Beauty & the Beast is another Disney classic taken from a beautiful storyline. I always say you should read the original story and be pleasantly surprised. Buy both the film and the book and enjoy them both.
Not Disney but To Good To Leave Behind - Once Upon A December-Anastasia
Anastasia is not a dDsney film but I still adore it. The famous story of the lost Russian princess brought to life in this animated film. This is one of my favorite non-Disney songs of all time. The song takes place when Anastasia enters the old Russian palace and begins to feel dream-like memories. The portraits come to life as she sees herself dressed beautifully and dancing amidst the court.
Anastasia from True Life to Animated Film
The story of the lost princess Anastasia has fascinated the world for years. In the film Anastasia survives and is eventually reunited with her grandmama. Unfortunately the true story is not a fairytale come to life. The woman who claimed to be Anastasia was proved to be a fake. They have identified the remains of the real Anastasia (whose body was found away from her family's and caused a lot of the confusion around her death).
Not Disney but To Good to Pass Up - Let Me Be Your Wings-Thumbelina
My friend gave me Thumbelina as a cheer-up after surgery. I was a little sad to watch it and realize how flaky Thumbelina actually was. I mean, she basically gives up easily and at one point, even gets ready to marry the mole because she finds her prince is dead. This song is when the prince finds her for the first time and takes her flying. He promises to be her wings (as she has none) and the two move like figure skaters gliding across the sky and water.
Thumbelina: the Fairy Tale & Film
Thumbelina is another animation of a classic tale. I find the story to be intriguing and imaginative. After all, a fairy prince and true love is always beautiful. Read the tale and enjoy the film!
