The 80s was a new era in romantic Hindi films. The ingredients and concepts in love stories changed dramatically bringing in a fresh new wave of romance films. The new wave of romance movies had situational comedy that became a hit with audiences. While love songs have always popular in Hindi films, club dance songs started gaining momentum in the late 90s. An amalgamation of Hip-hop influences and club sound influences fused with traditional music has become the dance flavor in Bollywood movies. Since the year 2000, majority of romance movies and romantic comedies feature slickly choreographed dance songs.

In recent years the romance genre has witnessed elements of other genres being included in love stories. While romance, romantic comedies and romance dramas have been popular since the Hindi film industry came into being, romantic drama thrillers, coming of age romance, action romance, and crime romance thrillers have become an integral part of romance genre in recent years. The romance genre in Bollywood has gotten bigger and broader including aspects of various genres in mainstream. The 90s helped pave the way for independent filmmakers. A number of independent filmmakers are bringing in their creative inputs from non-mainstream and blending concepts aesthetically with commercial and mainstream cinema.

The foreign locations filmed in romance movies through the 90s and 2000s have been breathtakingly beautiful. Needless to say, production houses are spending huge amounts of money to get movies made. A number of big budget romance movies made since the 80s have gone onto become popular not just in India but globally. Also, few romance movies made at a moderate budget or low budget have become cult favorites among youth. Interesting list, appreciate the effort. Ideally, IMO having such a long list may tend to dilute the significance of many of the movies even though they were exceptional films in their own right.

I totally agree with QSQT being where it is on your list. There was a certain charm of a different kind, an ability to tug at the hearts, lose one's in the innocence and beauty and melodies. There was enough drama to pack a punch and yet it was not an in-you-face kind of loud film. For many, it probably served as the main cross over film which separates film making of modern style. Sure HAHK was probably the bench mark in terms of box office success (periods were divided into pre-HAHK and from that point on) but i believe that divide, that next big step in Hindi cinema was taken by QSQT.
