12-Year-Old Singer Greyson Michael Chance "Paparazzi" Performance
Chance's "Paparazzi" Cover Evokes "Prodigy" Response
May 12, 2010
Greyson Michael Chance is a 12-year-old singer and musician. He is just starting to get major YouTube buzz for his cover of Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi." Many are regarding Greyson Chance as a prodigy. While these remarks may be a bit of a stretch, Chance clearly has natural talent as both a singer and musician. Considering that he is already coming out with original pieces, look for more exposure and a possible career for this young, budding star.
Chance recently performed "Paparazzi" at his school festival. You can see his sharp piano playing in the video below. What really surprised me is Greyson Michael Chance's singing abilities. He has decent power and range to his voice. The vocal tone is not bad, either. It often seems that someone is either really good at at least one musical instrument or good as a vocalist, but not both. This nice "Paparazzi" cover shows that Chance has potential in both categories of performance.
Of course, Greyson Michael Chance is 12 years old at the time of this writing. It remains to be seen how his voice will change, but there are good signs in this performance. It is not even his vocal tone that is so impressive. Tones change after puberty. His range might change, as well. But Chance shows many of the other vocal abilities that make for a good singer. His phrasing is excellent, and he evokes a reasonable amount of emotion for a 12-year-old kid. That will likely get even better as he gets older, as establishing an emotional connection to a performance is often one of the last things a singer masters.
What is even better for Michael Chance is that he has so many other talents than singing. His musician skills are already there. It's hard to say, but he also seems to be a budding songwriter. That combination of skills will give him more opportunities than the multitude of good but karaoke-like young singers that we see all the time.
In short, Greyson Michael Chance shows a great deal of promise for a 12-year-old kid. The praises of "prodigy" and the like may be hype, but there is obviously a lot of natural talent there for Chance to develop. With his combined vocal and musican skills, Chance has a much better "chance" than the average kid to develop a career in the cut-throat music industry.
