22 Romantic Christmas Movies

Updated on December 22, 2016

Best Romantic Comedies and Dramas

Christmas is a great time to watch holiday movies with your friends and family. Here are some great romantic movies that are fun and wonderful.

Note: I've listed these in chronological order, from newest to oldest. I've included the movie trailer and information about where it can be found. For some, when I could find the full movie for online (and in some cases for free), I included that information, as well.

On this list, you'll find blockbuster in-theater films as well as made-for-television romantic Christmas movies!

Angels Sing

Just in Time for Christmas is Hallmark's Hall of Fame movie for 2015 Christmas. Check out the trailer. A beautiful story of how a woman has to make a decision that will affect the rest of her life. But she receives help from a mystery person to see how her life would be if she chooses either things.

Christmas Detour is a fairly new hallmark romantic movies. It is entertaining and very enjoyable to watch. The optimist and romantic, Paige desperately needs to find a way back home to meet her fiancee’s parents before her wedding, but a snowstorm prevents that from happening. As she looks to find a way home, many surprises take place. Take a look.

Christmas at Cartwrights

This movie tells the story of Nicky Talbot (Alicia Witt), a single mother, who is unemployed and is trying to earn money to give her daughter Becky, the most fun Merry Christmas. Cartwright's department store is hiring and Nicky looks for a job there. All did not look well at first, when the senior executive turned her down, but eventually she was hired. You will have to watch the movie to learn what her mystery job is. This is a very enjoyable movie filled with romance, drama and will put you in the holiday spirit.

Finding Christmas (2013)

Finding Christmas

This is one of the newest Christmas movies on the list: Two single men get fed up with the dating scenes in their towns and decide to swap homes with each other to take a break, mix things up, and nurse their dating wounds. Of course, both men benefit from the new perspective offered by their new environments, and begin reassessing what they're looking for in life and love. A romantic movie somewhat like The Holiday.

Christmas with Holly

In the wake of her mother's death, grief causes a 6-year-old girl to stop talking. Her three uncles step in to help take care of her and help her heal. As the story unfolds, each character does their own healing and rediscovers the importance of family. A Hallmark movie that is family-oriented and also full of romance.

Note: The disc is available at Amazon but check YouTube, also.

Love at the Christmas Table

Sam and Kat have been friends since childhood and their families have always spent Christmas Eve together. They had their ups and downs. After thirty years of friendship, they saw each other over the Christmas table, and talking about life. Something surprising and unexpected happens . This is a story about family, tradition, history, and love. This is a great movie and a beautiful, romantic story. This movie has many valuable lessons to be learned about yourself, life, love and relationships.

Note: Last I checked, this was not yet available on Netflix but can be rented or streamed on Amazon.

A Bride for Christmas

After Jessie calls off her third marriage, she promises herself that she won't repeat that mistake a fourth time, and that's when perennial bachelor Aiden shows up. Aiden has made a bet that he can get a woman to say "yes" to marrying him by Christmas. So it's the woman who has sworn off saying "yes" vs. the man who'll do anything he can to get her to say "yes." And when Aiden discovers real feelings for her, what will happen?

Twelve Dates of Christmas

In this wonderful movie, it stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Amy Smart. A young woman who was set up on a blind date on Christmas Eve gets twelve chances to relive the same date until she finally get things right. Sort of like a mash-up of Groundhog Day and Scrooge: she gets twelve chances to discover how to break the cycle. Should she attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend, or should she pursue this new guy, or should she go for something else entirely?

Holiday Engagement

This movie is about a woman who consistently feels the pressure from her mother to marry. When she finally gets engaged and makes plans to bring her fiancé home to meet her entire family, he breaks up with her. Instead of having to tell her mother, she finds a replacement and hires an actor to play her fiancé so she won't disappoint her family. Loved this movie, very entertaining.

Christmas Cupid

Sloane is a super-successful PR woman when her starlet client dies. The starlet's spirit becomes Sloane's Christmas ghost-guide and helps her face her romantic past, present, and future (just like in Scrooge) and to see that her unethical, workaholic ways are going to ruin her forever if she doesn't do something fast. The rest of the movie is a surprise; you have to watch this.

Note: I couldn't find this on Netflix, but you can get the disc on Amazon. Check YouTube, too!

A Golden Christmas

A woman—a lawyer, recently widowed—decides she needs a new start. She wants to take her son and move back to the home she grew up in but her plan is thwarted when she discovers that her parents have already sold the house. She schemes to get the house back from the present owner. Find out in this wonderful movie who the present owner of her parents' home is.

Note: This film might be available on YouTube, so check there as well.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Jennifer is a single mom who hates Christmas. As a result, her six-year-old son doubts Santa Claus even exists. They are visited by her Uncle Ralph (Henry Winkler), who brings a passenger from his flight, a man who has never lost his love of Christmas and life, and he reminds them all what it's supposed to be about. Great clean movie to watch.

Note: Check availability at Amazon and YouTube.

Holiday Switch

Paula is overwhelmed with the struggle of paying bills and trying to make Christmas happen when she bumps into her old high school boyfriend (who is now rich and famous) and begins wondering what could have been and wishing she'd made a different choice of husbands. When her Christmas wish is magically granted and she sees what her life really would have become, she realizes how wonderful her life really is.

Note: This is available on disc or streaming via Amazon.

The Christmas Card (2007)

A soldier serving in Afghanistan receives a Christmas card from a woman he has never met and then goes to the town where she lives to find her. This film explores the extremes of human experience—war and celebration, horror and peace.

Note: Available on disc at both Netflix and Amazon; streaming at Amazon.

A Christmas Wedding (2006)

Two strangers who meet on Christmas day plan to marry on Christmas day two years later. This film follows the story of this couple's journey from first sight to "I do."

The Road to Christmas (2006)

Claire, a fashion photographer, is trapped in an airport in the middle of nowhere, trying to get to her Christmas wedding in Aspen. In a comical series of tragedies, she jumps through hoops trying to get to Aspen and meets some great characters in the meantime, including a man and his 13-year-old daughter. You have to see what happens in the end.

Note: Available on disc and on demand streaming at Amazon.

Christmas in Boston

Gina and Seth have been pen-pals for over ten years. They have become very close friends over that time period, but never met or seen a picture of each other. Seth gets a job with a toy company and is sent to Boston during the Christmas season. Gina lives in Boston. They were both very afraid and nervous, not realizing that, in spasms of self-consciousness, they have both sent pictures of their best friends instead of themselves. They start to treasure each other's pictures. So when they finally get a chance to meet, they actually have to send their best friends to the meeting. See what takes place in this delightful romantic, funny movie.

His and Her Christmas

Two journalists who both write Christmas columns for rival newspapers are thrown together (and sparks fly). It takes a while for the romance to bloom. The film does a great job of showing how certain intense situations can lead up to a relationship. See love revealed from a different angle in this Christmas movie.

Note: Available via disc or on-demand streaming at Amazon.

A Boyfriend For Christmas

I saw this movie on the Hallmark Channel. It is one of my favorites. When Holly was a teen, she told Santa she wanted a boyfriend for Christmas, and he promised he'd bring her one. Twenty years later, Holly has stopped wishing to find that special guy and believes Santa did not fulfill her wish. Watch how this promise made as a teen comes to life. There's a lot of drama and funny moments here.

A Christmas Romance

A widowed mother of two is laid off from her job just before Christmas. When she goes to help a man during a blizzard on Christmas Eve, she doesn't realize he's the vice president of her bank who came to repossess her home. When he is forced to spend Christmas with her and her children, everything changes.

Note: I did see this serialized on YouTube.

While You Were Sleeping

Lonely Lucy collects the fare at the subway and has a crush on a man she sees daily. During the holidays, she saves his life after he is mugged and thrown into the path of an oncoming train. The injured man goes into a coma; when Lucy ends up at the hospital she is mistaken for his fianceé. She gets to know his family and ends up falling in love with his brother but she can't admit it for fear of being unfaithful to a man in a coma she's never spoken to. It 's a very funny movie with romance, and has a few twists to it.

The Holiday is a really cute movie. It's the only thing my mom has ever seen Jack Black in, and so she thinks he is very charming. I figured I will just let her believe, rather than mentioning his other work to her. I love romances and I love Christmas movies so I'll have to check off the movies on your list.

The Holiday is probably my all time favorite! I loved it!

I just watched Christmas with Holly when it aired on T.V. this past week. It was very cute for the whole family.

Thanks for this list because I have been in the mood to watch some grown-up Christmas movies. Lately, I have been watching all the classics with my son.

The Holiday was one of the first romantic comdies I've ever seen all the way through and actually enjoyed. I'm more of a horror fan. I own one romantic comedy that I actually purchased before I watched. It was Under The Tuscan Sun and I loved it. I may have to crossover and give more of these movies a try.

I love Christmas movies all year long so I'm happy to have stumbled onto your hub. I love The Holiday and am a sucker for most Hallmark movies. There are not as many Hallmark movies in Canada and it looks like I missed a few! I'm excited to watch them. Thanks!

Haven't seen any of these. Anything you'd recommend for people who don't normally watch rom-coms?

If you are referring to christmas movies that are not romantic comedies, I recommend a christmas wish, christmas angel (2009) version and christmas shoes.

Hello! I really love your list of Christmas movies! I adore this holiday and consider it the best time of the year, when the whole family gathers together at the festive table, decorates the house and the Christmas tree, exchanges gifts and just has fun! I’m sure that Christmas movies and cartoons (I like them as well and watch them with my kids each year) help create that special atmosphere of this holiday and recollect all the cherished dreams and feelings we have. They make people better, reminding them of the happiness and all those good things that surround them. I’m sure, these movies will be popular in ten or even twenty years, because they are the embodiment of happiness, family values and life as it is! Thank you a lot, again!
