Best Female-Fronted Heavy Metal Bands Written By 80's Hair Band Metal Fan - Part 1

Updated on March 23, 2014

Comparing the 80's Metal Sound To Today's Metal

Being that I am from the United States, I grew up listening to 80's hair metal bands/glam bands like Motley Crue, Poison, Bango Tango, Ratt, etc. Most of these groups were from Los Angeles as the Sunset Strip harbored one hair band after another.

Those groups were great when I was in high school. I could listen to those 80's bands over and over and feel good, but 20 years later, I just grew sick of the sound. I even played craps with C.C. Deville and Bobby Dall of Poison in Las Vegas which after C.C. autographed one of my chips. I immediately got tickets to see Poison headline an amazing act the next night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Vegas with opening acts Faster Pussycat, Cinderella and Dokken. I loved it.

Now, I just want more metal like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. That glam sound no longer does it for me. It is the same happy commercial sound that I loved, but now, as I get older, I want the heavier stuff.

Well, my friends, you simply won't find it in the United States or even the U.K. We need to look all over the world and I am finding that the best metal today is coming out of countries like Finland, Sweden, Germany and other Scandinavian countries. I even found an amazing female-fronted metal band out of Poland called Unsun (see my YouTube video below for Unsun).

Comparing 80's metal powerhouses like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden to today's sound:

In the 80's, those heavy metal bands out of England were the rulers. Judas Priest, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Saxon just ruled. The straight 16th note bass lines are amazing.

I wanted more of that in 2010-2020 decade, so I will write several hubs on the groups that I find.

Today's metal sound is more symphonic with orchestras and mild keyboard sounds, but the women sing like opera singers. They don't scream like in the 80's. They actually sing opera!

The guitars are still heavy and fast!

About Krypteria

Krypteria comes out of Germany fronted by German-Korean singer Ji-In Cho. She's beatiful and has an amazing voice.

Although Krypteria's main objective was to use different vocalists for each album, her voice was what they were looking for.

Their albums keep improving with each release.

Eowyn - Beautiful Ashes

Unsun - Home

Unsun is An Amazing Metal Band from Poland!

What? Poland? Metal? Is it possible??? Americans have a habit it making Polish jokes. This band is no joke! Unsun is fronted by lead vocalist Anna "Aya" Stefanowicz, a beautiful blonde vixen who can belt out the tunes!

Unsun only has two albums and I look forward to more from them.

Lacuna Coil - Spellbound

Lacuna Coil is a Metal Band Out Of Italy

I did not know metal would ever come out of Italy, but it does with Lacuna Coil - Fronted by vixen Christina Scabbia, Lacuna Coil has over studio albums every one with singles.

Spellbound is an amazing song from the album Shallow Life!

@hackslap - Very cool! I love Rob Halford's vocals and I think some of these women actually match him. He does have female evil twins out there LOL

Check out Benedictum from San Diego, CA. The band plays oldschool metal ala Dio era Black Sabbath, and their front woman, Veronica Freeman, can wail!!

I've actually heard of Krypteria!..Ji-In is truly a magnificent singer ..but yes I'll admit I've fallen a bit out of touch with the metal scene today...In my head I still feel that when it comes to the heavier stuff.. one really can't match Rob Halford's operatic vocals or the style of Saxon and Iron Maiden (My favorite Iron Maiden release being Strangers in a Strange Land)...

And I'm in complete agreement re Vixen Rev It Up I think they just gave up coz grunge had more or less taken over by then..
