5 Characters That Don't Get the Credit They Deserve
There have always been and always will be characters that do not get the perks that they deserve despite their efforts. They will always be second or third to the main protagonist even if they work harder than they do. There are more than I have listed here and these are not in a specific order. Though I may do more in the future, here are some characters I felt deserved some recognition.
# 1 Super Mario's, Yoshi:
Yoshi is a small green dinosaur which Mario uses to ride around on in various games. He is Mario and Luigi's side-kick. Yoshi first appeared in Super Mario World as a native in Dinosaur Land who allowed Mario and Luigi ride him in order to find Peach who was kidnapped by Bowser. There isn't really much to his back story unless you count the game “Yoshi's Story”: which explains Yoshie Island being taken over by Baby Bowser and 6 baby Yoshies who must save their island. He has a long tongue which he can use to grab (most) enemies or items and can either eat them or spit them out as a form of attack. In some games his tongue can be a grappling hook. Yoshi can jump high and hold himself in the air for a brief period of time. Depending on the color or what he eats, he can have special abilities like breathing fire or flying. He runs faster than Mario and can lay eggs which can be used as weapons or may contain items. He has other attacks such as ground-pound or tail whip as well. Yoshi aids Mario in many games.
Why He Deserves Credit:
Yoshi is an important character in many Mario games. Though you don't need him to win, he makes the game a little easier and provides more fun as you get to run around and eat everyone. Yoshi helps Mario and Luigi willingly even though he doesn't really have to. You can also see in Super Mario World that Mario actually punches Yoshi in the back of his head to force him to stick out his tongue. Mario can also jump off of Yoshi while they are in the air so he can make it where he's trying to go, while Yoshi falls into the nothing-ness where we don't know what happens. Basically, Mario abuses and takes advantage of Yoshi who doesn't really get anything out of it. Yoshi doesn't fight for a princess and sometimes he can't even go with you to the next level. So why can't Yoshi get something? Even if we just see Mario and Luigi toss him some fruit it'd be nice. Instead, if Yoshi makes it to the end, we just see them wave good-bye and carry on but we don't see what happens to Yoshi.
#2 Sonic the Hedgehog's, Tails:
Miles “Tails” Prower is from the video game, comic, and TV series, Sonic the Hedgehog. He is a two-tailed fox who happens to be Sonic's best friend as well as a mechanic/engineer. Tails was first created for Sonic 2 for the Sega system and was playable in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he continues to be an important character in the Sonic games as well as in the TV series. Tails is very weak and doesn't know how to fight so Sonic is constantly keeping him out of trouble. Doctor Robotnik uses this to his advantage and continually kidnaps Tails as a way to taunt and bait Sonic. Tails is portrayed to be younger than Sonic and a bit naive but he is incredibly intelligent. He looks up to and wants to be just like Sonic and deeply admires his bravery and heroics.
Why He Deserves Credit:
Despite the fact that Tails is young and incapable of defending himself on his own, he is a genius. Tails finds ways to defend himself and to be a help to the team. Unlike Sonic, Tails has the abilities to fly and swim, thus being useful in several Sonic video games. Tails also invents machines for Sonic and himself to use such as the Extreme Gear boards, their boards used in Sonic Rides, and the Tornado, their airplane used in several games. He abuilt the Cyclone which is a transformer that can become a jet, car, or used to walk around in. It also has lasers and a cannon. Tails also created Metal Sonic, a robot resembling Sonic with transforming abilities. Tails may have his downsides, but he is Sonic's best friend and side-kick who deserves some applause. Without Tails I feel life would be much harder on Sonic. Tails' inventions provide him with information as well as means of travel, protection, and assistance. Tails is an important character in Sonic's world and should be recognized as such.
# 3 Dragon Ball Z's, Vegeta:
Vegeta is from Dragon Ball Z. He is a Saiyan Prince, the last of his kind, and his initial goal when he comes to Earth is to find the Dragon Balls that he has heard about. At first, Vegeta is a villain and Goku (who he calls Kakarot, Goku's saiyan name) is there to stop him. Vegeta has the upper-hand for a while but Goku wins out in the end using a Spirit Bomb (with Krillin's help) to wound Vegeta enough to cause him to retreat. Later, they encounter Vegeta again on planet Namek. They agree to “team-up” as they are now fighting a common enemy but Vegeta is not fully part of the group. Vegeta is killed by Frieza but wished back to life on Earth while Goku stays behind to finish Frieza off. Namek explodes taking Frieza and presumably Goku, with it. After the war on planet Namek and the death of Frieza, everyone assumes Goku is dead. However, Vegeta steals Bulma's ship and attempts to search for him. With no luck, Vegeta returns to Earth and stays there with the rest of the group and continues to be a part of it even after Goku's return. Personality-wise, Vegeta is stubborn and arrogant. He feels he is superior to everyone else because he is a saiyan and a prince. He is very cold and shows little emotion, dedicating his entire existence to surpassing Goku in power to prove himself the better saiyan. In later seasons, Vegeta eventually starts to show more humanity, he marries Bulma and even has two kids with her (Trunks and Bulla).
Why He Deserves Credit:
Vegeta works incredibly hard, harder than any other characters in the DBZ series (aside from Goku). He constantly pushes his body to its limit all because he wants to be stronger than or at least equal to Goku. In one episode, Vegeta enters Capsule Corp's training capsule at 300 times gravity despite Bulma's warrnings that it could kill him, but he still presses on and ends up severely injured (but is nursed back to recovery by Bulma). No other character has ever attempted this except Goku. Yet, even after all of his hard work and training, Goku always gets to the next level before him (not to down-play Goku). Vegeta fights just as hard, he pushes himself just as far and he doesn't give up until he's absolutely can't fight anymore, but he still is always a step behind Goku. He never gets to turn into a new super saiyan form first and I find that unfair. Yes, Vegeta is stubborn and arrogant, but I think he deserves just once to be at a higher level than Goku. Vegeta is an important character and is a major part of their team, without him they probably would not have been successful in several of their battles (like the Androids and Cell). Vegeta does his part and I think he deserves a little bit of recognition for it.
# 4 Pokemon's, Brock and Misty:
Brock and Misty are Ash's first companions in the television series Pokemon. Brock and Misty are two of Ash's closest friends and are both important up through Season 5 (Brock leaves in Season 2 but returns and Misty leaves in Season 5 but returns on occasion). First, Ash meets Misty, a water-pokemon trainer. She accidentally fishes him out of a river with his Pikachu. Pikachu is injured and Ash takes Misty's bike as a way to escape the Spearow that are chasing after them. During the incident, Pikachu uses a thunder attack which destroys Misty's bike. Misty then declares she won't stop following him until she gets a new bike. Still, the two become friends on their journey. Misty is short-tempered, stubborn, and impatient, but she is also very kind and passionate about water pokemon, dreaming to become a great trainer. Next Ash meets Brock, a rock-pokemon trainer. Brock is the first gym leader Ash faces and beats in the Kanto League. At first, Ash loses to Brock but a stranger (who turns out to be Brock's dad) helps Pikachu grow stronger and they face Brock again. Pikachu beats Brock's Geodude but is still no match for Onix. Pikachu uses his thundershock causing the sprinklers to go off, weakening Onix. Though Brock offers Ash the gym badge he refuses to take it saying his victory was unfair. Brock catches up with Ash and upon the return of his father, decides to join he and Misty on their journey. Brock is the “parental” figure of the group, he is the oldest and tends to try and avoid dangerous situations. Brock is kind and wise, though he tends to chase after beautiful women. He wants to become a great pokemon breeder.
Why They Deserve Credit:
Brock and Misty are always by Ash's side in his adventures. They always support him and help him get through his trials and battles. They also fight along-side him, throwing their pokemon into battles to assist Ash. They are both strong trainers who never seem to get any of the glory Ash does. Though they go to tournaments and have even competed some themselves, they never get a final victory. They also never get exciting new pokemon like Ash does. Misty gets a Psyduck by accident who more so annoys her than helps, and a Togepi who usually gets her into more trouble and can't really battle because its a baby. Brock gets a Zubat, which lets be honest, no one really gets excited to catch a Zubat, though he does also get a Vulpix but it never really gets to do anything special like Pikachu does. Brock and Misty travel with Ash, they train with Ash, and they help Ash, but they never really seem to get any of the glory despite going through everything that he does.
# 5 Yu Yu Hakusho's, Kazuma Kuwabara:
Kazuma Kuwabara, or just Kuwabara is sort of similar to Vegeta. He starts off as sort of an antagonist by always picking fights with Yusuke Urameshi and trying to prove that he's tougher than him. Kuwabara and Yusuke constantly fight and Yusuke always wins much to Kuwabara's embarrassment. Eventually, Kuwabara begins to respect Yusuke and they form a close friendship. Kuwabara is also sensitive to spirits and begins to travel with Yusuke to the spirit world and helps with his Spirit Detective cases. He also gets a spirit sword and its powerful but he isn't very coordinated with it. Like Yusuke, his powers develop and he grows in strength and obtains new swords with better abilities. He gets to meet an Ice Apparition, Yukina, and fall in love (though she doesn't quite understand). He is a tough guy, but he also has a sensitive and caring side. It seems like Kuwabara gets more than the average side-kick, but he still gets stuck just being a side-kick.
Why He Deserves Credit:
Kuwabara is clumsy, bull-headed, and not always the brightest crayon in the box, but he is dedicated to helping Yusuke. Kuwabara puts his life on the line along with Yusuke in many battles even though he's not nearly as strong as Yusuke is. Kuwabara will go in swinging even when he knows he'll lose, just to provide some kind of help. He would rather die than just stand on the side-lines and watch the others get hurt. He's a big help to Yusuke on several cases, especially with the help of his spirit sense. He goes as far as to sacrifice himself, not to save a life, but to simply unlock Yusuke's full power during the Dark Tournament (though it turns out he survives). Yes, Kuwabara gets some upgrades, and his sword gets super awesome, but like many others, Kuwabara never gets real glory. He doesn't get to win the Dark Tournament even though he's the one who sacrificed himself. He never gets to beat Yusuke in a fight even though that's all he wants, which boils down to respect. Kuwabara wants the respect from Yusuke that he has from him. He just wants that one victory and he never really gets to have it.
