5 Reasons Why You Should Watch Westworld

Updated on June 28, 2017

What is Westworld?

What is Westworld?

HBO's Westworld which first aired October 02, 2016 on HBO is a TV series based off the 1973 film with the same name, written and directed by the American novelist Michael Crichton.

It's only on it's first season for now with 10 episodes only.

The story goes like this. Imagine being rich, wealthy and bored. Being confined by the rules and laws where you aren't able to do anything fun. Imagine being free, getting to live a day, a week or even a month free from all the confines and rules of the outside world and just be... wild.

A company created the themepark "Westworld" set in the wild west. Where within the confines of the park you'll get to see human-like robots called "Hosts", and it's pretty hard to differentiate them from an actual human. All the hosts in the park are not aware that they're even robots, and that they aren't real people, which makes the experience more life-like to the guests. Once in, you'll be dressed up to blend in with the wild west era, cowboy hats, boots, etc. and even a revolver filled with bullets. You'll get a train ride into the starting town of the park and once off, you're free to do what you want, even with the hosts, and when I say anything, I mean anything (still within the laws of reality though). Kill the hosts? Have sex with them? Drink whiskey in a local tavern? You paid for it, enjoy yourself. You could also talk to some hosts with quests like hunt down a local bandit that's terrorizing the townsfolk, etc. Almost every host in the park has storylines programed into their system, so there will always be something to do there.

Oh I almost forgot, you can use the guns on the hosts and kill them, but they can't kill other real humans, and they also can't kill you with their guns. They just hurt a bit when you get shot. After a host has been killed, when the day is done and all the other hosts are "asleep". A bunch of guys in hazmat suits go in to the park to collect the body and fix it up to be put back the day after.

Anyway, I won't prolong you guys much longer, if you haven't been hooked to watching it yet here's the 5 reasons why you should watch Westworld.

1. The Opening Song

Honestly, this was one of the things that got me hooked on the show. My friend showed me the opening of Westworld and I immediately loved it. The music, composed by Ramin Djawadi, was abit eerie or creepy sounding to some, but for me it sounded amazing and has alot of emotion for me.

The video itself which was directed by Patrick Clair, is beautifully made to match the music.

It shows how the Hosts are made, looked like they were just 3-D printed and was given a milk bath...

Here's the opening if you want to watch.

2. Twists, oh the twists.

This series has no short comings on twists, you get speculations on stuff that will happen and it'll just kick you infront of your face with a different happening.

Even the first 10 minutes of the first episode there was already a twist that happened. When I watched it alone my head was baffled by what just happened or how what my initial thoughts were wrong in so many levels.

If you're a fan of challenging your binge-watching buddy on things that will happen later on in the show, this is the show for you.

3. Amazing cast members

One of the main cast members is Evan Rachel Wood playing "Dolores Abernathy", one if the Hosts in the park. At the started of the show you'd think she's just another main girl along with a guy, develops a relationship and lives happily ever after, but in the show she is much, much more.
Other cast members include

Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsede along with the brillaint Ed Harris as the mysterious "Man in Black", Anthony Hopkins as "Robert Ford", the owner of the park, and a whole lot more.
Each one having an important role into the plot of the show, as each episode passes by, you'd be astonished as each character show their true self.

4. Cinematography and Effects

Another thing that I liked in the show are the scenes when they showcase the wonderful view of the park itself, vast open fields, large canyons and mountains.

I won't forget about the amazing effects they do, especially in some parts when a bullet goes through some guy's head and it explodes, a bit gorey but amazing none-the-less.

There may be some blood and gore in the show, but not that much comparing to some horror shows and movies. I mean, it's the wild west, of course there would be lots of shooting, blood and death. I'm not a big fan of blood myself but I still managed to enjoy the show.

5. Lastly, The Drama

I'm not much of a fan of the drama genre, but this show became an exception. The show's a perfect blend of Drama and Thriller while being able to mix Western and Science Fiction together.

I honestly felt the emotion of the Hosts in the show, even though they're just a bunch of pre-programmed robots, they still managed to show emotion as if they were human. Maybe because one big factor is because of them being oblivious to knowing they're not human.

Each episode gave me a mixture of hate, happiness, anger, surprise and shock. And still manages to make me stay for more.

Final Words

I hope by reading this article made you think about opening up your netflix and look for Westworld to watch it immediately. If not, well that's up to you, it's your life.

But here's a little quick TL;DR on what you'll get when you watch the show:

-Drama, Emotions through the roof in some episodes. I didn't cry though, but still heartwarming/sad.

-Action. Lots of gun fighting, some knife battles, which means there'll be some blood in the show.

-butt-naked people. Just a warning, there's a lot of nudity in this show, some full frontal, some just half, you get the point.. It's like Game of Thrones but western and with robots I guess?

-TWISTS. Hell this show made my brain hurt and I was so surprised in some episodes. Mixed emotions about it haha.

Hope you'll enjoy the show :)

I love this show. I was so pumped for when it was finally released. A show with some great twists and a good plot. I love how they combine the western days with the future. So unique and clever. Plus I love the Nolan's so it was a no brainer to watch this show.
