21st Century- Hollywood Movies
Hollywood is a marvellous place where a lot of movie production studios are based including Universal, Walt Disney, Warner Brothers etc. Although there have been some absolutely amazing movies released before the year 2000, this list focuses on the great movies which have been released into theatres from the year 2000 right up until the current present day (June 2014).
In the list I have for each letter (A-Z) done a short review for each movie listed at the top of the letter section (listed as 'Movie Highlight'). For all of the movies in the list there is the director, mood (to watch the movie) and our rating out of 10 (1 being the worst and 10 being the best) for the movie.

#1- Movie Highlight! - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Director: Tim Burton
Short Review: ''Alice in Wonderland'' (2010) offers a real life look at the imaginary world created within Alice's mind. We have seen Disney animations look at the world and now we get to see this world in a whole new and exciting light. The performances given by the actors certainly proved well as Alice's character performed by Mia Wasikowska seemed to be effortless for the actress as she seemed almost too perfect for the role. I was almost instantly taken back to my experience watching Disney's animation of 'Alice in Wonderland' and couldn't believe how true Tim Burton (director of 'Alice in Wonderland', 2010) was to the original story.
As soon as your eyes are struck by the magic of 'Alice in Wonderland', you know you are watching a Tim Burton movie which is almost magical. As a fan of Tim Burton I was anticipating the arrival of the updated 'Alice in Wonderland' movie for quite some time and was delighted by my first viewing of the movie. Unlike Disney's animated showing of 'Alice in Wonderland' which would have to be said, is most appealing to a younger demographic (aged between around 3-10 years of age), this is by far not the case for Tim Burton's telling of the classic tale. All ages whether young or old will appreciate the pure magic which is brought to the screens as we meet some delightful characters among 'wonderland' including the 'mad hatter' (played by Johnny Depp) and the 'white queen' (played by Anne Hathaway). Although not to worry as surely enough there is evil in 'wonderland' which goes by the name of the 'red queen' (played by Helena Bonham Carter) which proves a difficult challenge to overcome for 'Alice'.

#14- Movie Highlight! - Batman Begins (2005)
Director: Christopher Nolan
Short Review: ''Batman Begins'' (2005) is a dark tale based on the 'Batman' comics (created by DC Comics) which is the latest update of the 'Batman' franchise. Christopher Nolan (director of ''Batman Begins'', 2005) has brought a dark feel to the ''Batman Begins'' movie which is like nothing we have ever seen before in the previous 'Batman' movies which were more comical than dark. Nolan has brought forth a new and exciting feel to 'Batman' which is realistic and gives 'Batman' a real sense of danger which he must face, telling the tale of how Bruce Wayne (man behind 'Batman') became the superhero.
''Batman Begins'' certainly brings the right feel for the 21st Century line up which is defining 'Hollywood' movies with new and exciting revivals of old ideas. Christian Bale who plays the starring role as Bruce Wayne (aka 'Batman') in ''Batman Begins'' does a superb job performing at the highest level, for the first time showing audiences why 'Batman' is one of the greatest DC Comics hero's of all time. Anyone into superhero movies or just general action movies will want to see ''Batman Begins'' as it provides something for everyone but one thing is certain, 'Batman' fans will go nuts over the movie.

#37- Movie Highlight! - The Crazies (2010)
Director: Breck Eisner
Short Review: ''The Crazies'' (2010) has everything one can look for in a horror / thriller / mystery as the story begins to take a turn for the worst. When a small Iowa town in America becomes infested with once normal people, but now a bunch of raging lunatics wielding weapons, it was anyone's guess as to how the movie was going to end.
Without spoiling anything in the movie, I must explain that this is a movie to watch if you like zombie movies but not interested in seeing a bunch of flesh eaters. ''The Crazies'' is simply about a government chemical which is accidentally released into a small towns water supply causing those who drink it to become a bunch of well... Crazies!
Although there is a story worth watching in this movie outside of the bigger plot outline involving the towns sheriff 'David' (played by Timothy Olyphant), his wife 'Judy' (played by Radha Mitchell) and the deputy 'Russell' (played by Joe Anderson). The three must journey out of the town which isn't easy with 'crazies' all over the place and to make matters worse, there are US soldiers who have set up road blocks with orders to shoot anyone on site ('crazy' or normal).
Mood: To see people go nuts, but do not feel like watching the flesh being torn off people's bodies and eaten.

Ron Woodroof (played by Matthew McConaughey) is down on his luck when he is diagnosed with having AIDS. Determined not to let the disease and the threat of death bring him down he decides to help work around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need.
''Dallas Buyers Club'' is a brilliant movie which demands attention pointing out the reality of the sufferers who have the AIDS disease. With a breathtaking performance from Matthew McConaughey who lost a lot of weight in order to play the role which adds to the realistic feel around the movie.

#68- Movie Highlight! - Eastern Promises (2007)
Director: David Cronenberg
Short Review: ''Eastern Promises'' is by far one of the best criminal movies ever created with an interesting look at a Russian mob operating in the UK. Mostly focused on an undercover police officer as he attempts to get as close as he possibly can to the mob so that he can get enough evidence to stop their activities once and for all.
Viggo Mortensen performs well as the undercover officer with a twist which soon unravels as the movie progresses. Naomi Watts also plays a leading role in the movie as a nurse who uncovers a hidden secret involving the head of the Russian mob.
For fans of the violent movie ''A History of Violence'', you are sure to enjoy ''Eastern Promises'' as it is directed and has the same leading man which could only have ever meant great things. ''Eastern Promises'' is a violent movie with a serious look at the underworld involving the Russian mobs.

#90- Movie Highlight! - Frozen (2013)
Directors: Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee
Short Review: ''Frozen'' (2013) is a family movie which does not disappoint with a fun story which the entire family can enjoy. Although the songs proved a little irritating in my view but I am sure children will love them as they seemed to fit in well with the movie.
''Frozen'' is arguably Disney's best animated creation so far in the 21st Century with 'Tangled' close behind. I feel as though the amazing ''Frozen'' and the likes of other such Disney movies as 'Tangled' and 'Wreck-It Ralph' are merely the start for what is going to come in the future from Disney.

#135- Movie Highlight! - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
Director: Peter Jackson
Short Review: ''The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'' (2013) is the sequel to 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' following the quest of a group of dwarves, a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins and a wizard named Gandalf the grey. Their journey is to the lonely mountain which the dwarves wish to claim back but to do so they must first kill the dragon 'Smaug' which slumbers in the mountain.
Fans of the 'Lord of the Rings' franchise will certainly want to watch 'The Hobbit' movies as it is a prequel to 'The Lord of the Rings'. 'The Hobbit' series so far has proven to be great but in order to fully enjoy the 'The Hobbit' movies you must not compare it to the 'Lord of the Rings' movies, as in doing so you will only see the missing characters which you were used to seeing in 'Lord of the Rings' and not the great movie before you.
Overall ''The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'' is a great movie which finally brings the elves into the mix which is done very well bringing back a similar face (Legolas). The battles are more imminent than they were in 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' which seemed to make the movie flow smoothly without feeling slow at times which was great. I wasn't so shore at first seeing that the dragon 'Smaug' could speak but it seemed to add more evil to the character so I found myself enjoying the long conversation between the dragon 'Smaug' and Bilbo in the lonely mountain.

#178- Movie Highlight! - Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)
Directors: Carlos Saldanha and Mike Thurmeier
Short Review: ''Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs'' (2009) is everything anyone could want from a family animation movie with all of our favourite 'Ice Age' characters including Manny, Sid and Diego. Also introducing some new characters which really seemed to work in the movie with the existing main characters in a twist mixing the ice age animals with the prehistoric dinosaurs which was a really fun idea. If anything the introduction of dinosaurs, into the movie being hidden way down under the ice was a brilliant idea as what is it everyone loves more than ice age animals? Well there is only one thing, being dinosaurs!
Before watching ''Ice age: Dawn of the dinosaurs'', the only animated movie I had previously seen starring dinosaurs was the Disney animated movie ''Dinosaur'' (2000) which is honestly one of my favourite animation movies of all time. However do not expect a movie anything like Disney's ''Dinosaur'' as ''Ice age: Dawn of the dinosaurs'' is completely different as the dinosaurs or quite comical in the 'Ice age' movie. Although not to worry as it was hilarious from start till finish with some classic moments, my favourite being when Sid becomes the mother of 3 T-Rex babies, only to be confronted by the T-Rex mother. Hilarious!
All fans of ''Ice age'' will scream with laughter over ''Ice age: Dawn of the dinosaurs'' as it offers humour that everyone of all ages can appreciate. 'Ice age' has always been a series of movies that the whole family can sit down together to enjoy and this one is no different, so just sit down and enjoy the movie.

#203- Movie Highlight! - Jack Reacher (2012)
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Short Review: ''Jack Reacher'' (2012) is an action packed adventure starring Tom Cruise as 'Jack Reacher' which he seemlessly suited. ''Jack Reacher'' is a movie based solely around 'Jack Reacher' as he sets out on a case to figure out who shot dead a group of civilians with a sniper rifle.
At times the movie felt unrealistic, but it works as I treated ''Jack Reacher'' a lot like I did with ''Mission Impossible'', not seeking to point out the unrealistic scenes but instead enjoying them for what they are. In doing that I am able to enjoy action movies a lot more which I have to say considering the action movies which are realistic, happen not to be quite as entertaining to watch.
Fans of 'mission impossible' will love ''Jack Reacher'' as it shares similar elements, of course the obvious thing being Tom Cruise as the leading role. But there are other elements including the unique set of skills obtained by 'Jack Reacher', allowing him to fight (hand to hand combat), shoot weapons, use knives with seriously deadly skill. However unlike 'Mission Impossible', ''Jack Reacher'' isn't a movie whereby Tom Cruise works as a spy but more of an elite killer having previously worked as a homicide investigator.

#214- Movie Highlight! - King Kong (2005)
Director: Peter Jackson
Short Review: ''King Kong'' (2005) is a remake of a classic which ordinary would worry me as Hollywood movie remakes always seem daunting to watch as they always seem to fail in bringing across a great movie. However ''King Kong'' has been an entirely different story with a great job done by the director Peter Jackson. The AI in this movie really jelled with the atmosphere on the island where 'King Kong' lived very well with some superb acting from the likes of Adrien Brody, Naomi Watts and Jack Black.
''King Kong'' is a long movie to watch lasting over 2 hours but like Peter Jackson's ''Lord of the Rings'' series it is worth every second. To create a movie like ''King Kong'', it is going to be a long ride as there is a lot to add into the movie, bringing in the story with the movie director Carl Denham (played by Jack Black) who aims to create a great movie. Then there is Ann Darrow (played by Naomi Watts), who is a struggling actress who meets Carl Denham winning the leading lady role in his movie. After this there is Jack Driscoll (played by Adrien Brody) a scriptwriter who is brought along on the journey to the mystery island where Carl Denham is going to shoot the movie. Then after the cast and crew set sail across the ocean on their journey to the mystery island they soon realise that the island has a little more mystery than they were looking for on arrival. Then finally there is the story to be told of the capture of the eighth wonder of the world ('King Kong') when he is brought back to New York alive for the world to see. The movie starts as a story where a movie is to be made on a mysterious island and turns into the capturing of a giant gorilla ('King Kong') who is brought into a big city full of people. What could possibly go wrong!
A must watch not only for fans of the original ''King Kong'' movie but of action/adventure movies in general as ''King Kong'' (2005) will not disappoint.

Short Review: ''Love Actually'' (2003) is a timeless comedy/drama/romance which follows the lives of eight very different couples in slightly interrelated tales all set a month before Christmas in London, England.
''Love Actually'' is a fun movie to watch with some big Hollywood names with the likes of Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Bill Nighy, Keira Knightley and Martin Freeman. #256- Movie Highlight! - Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol (2011)
Director: Brad Bird
Short Review: ''Mission: Impossible- Ghost protocol'' (2011) is a movie like no other with some seriously entertaining scenes. I remember the first time I saw ''Mission Impossible'', the first in the 'Mission Impossible' series which was a brilliant spy movie. Tom Cruise does not disappoint, with a performance as good as in the previous 3 'Mission Impossible' movies and I must say that this has to be the best in the series so far. I wasn't expecting this movie to be quite so entertaining as the fourth movie in series tends to be when the mistakes are made, but this is far from the case with ''Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol''.
A personal favourite scene from the movie of mine is when Tom Cruise is hanging onto the outside of a building and must climb down to a floor further below and enter through the window. The scene was tense, exciting and had to be the best scene in the movie by far making matters worse when Tom Cruise must be rushed because of two serious problems, a sandstorm heading his way and also due to the fact that the power on his gadget is running low. The gadget is what is allowing him to hold on to the outside of the building in which without would cause his to fall to his inevitable death.
Tom Cruise is superb in his role within the movie starring alongside a great cast including some greats like Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Paula Patton. A must watch for fans of the 'Mission Impossible' franchise as well as action/adventure fans as the thrill ride seems endless in the fourth 'Mission Impossible' movie released so far.

#291- Movie Highlight! - No Country for Old Men (2007)
Directors: Ethan Coen and Joel Coen (as The Coen Brothers)
Short Review: ''No Country for Old Men'' (2007) is a thriller unlike any other directed by the amazing 'Coen Brothers' known for directing great movies. ''No Country for Old Men'' follows the life of a hitman as he hunts down a man who got lucky finding a case full of cash which he decides to keep which was his first of many mistakes. The hitman is a psychopathic loner with a skill for finding and killing his targets and a lot of people die in this movie by his hands, all surprising as they happen.
An entertaining evening thriller which always seems to entertain, no matter how many times you watch the movie. Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin are brilliant in this movie with a unlikely story being told in a more than entertaining fashion which is all thanks to the 'Coen Brothers'.

#317- Movie Highlight! - P.S. I Love You (2007)
Director: Richard LaGravenese
Short Review: In ''P.S. I Love You'' Holly (a young widower) loses the love of her life when he passes away and she can't seem to find her way in life without him. Although thankfully Gerry had thought ahead before he died leaving Holly a series of letters which are delivered in new and interesting fashions each time. Every time Holly receives one of the letters from Gerry, they all end with 'P.S. I love you' which her family believe his holding her back in the past when in true fact they are pushing her forward.
''P.S. I Love You'' is a drama/romance which at times gets the tears flowing but also feels uplifting and happy at other times which is everything a person should feel when watching a romantic movie so I am pleased with having seen the movie. Hilary Swank (Starred as Holly) and Gerard Butler (starred as Gerry) certainly played their parts in the movie well, allowing for an emotionally entertaining movie which does not cease to surprise.

#340- Movie Highlight! - Quantum of Solace (James Bond, 2008)
Director: Marc Foster
Short Review: ''Quantum of Solace'' is the second in the latest series of 'James Bond' movies starring Daniel Craig as 'James Bond' (unstoppable MI7 agent). Although not quite as exciting as the first ''Casino Royale'' which seemed to have a great story which gelled with the 'James Bond' feel, ''Quantum of Solace'' definitely succeeded in providing non stop entertainment.
''Quantum of Solace'' had a fun story with the typical car chases, shoot out, hand to hand fights and rundowns with Bond chasing his targets across a series of obstacles leading to another kill to add to his endless list. The movie seemed slow at times but soon picked up with the car chases and gunfights but I wouldn't say that it was quite on the same league as ''Casino Royale''. Although well worth a watch if you are a 'James Bond' fan or looking for an action/adventure to kill a couple of hours.

#342- Movie Highlight! - Real Steel (2011)
Director: Shawn Levy
Short Review: Before Reading- Contains movie spoiler - ''Real Steel'' (2011) is an entertaining movie set in the near future where robot boxing is a leading sport and a promoter in debt seeks to get to the top but seems to fall back down every time he moves up the bar ever so slightly. Until the promoter (Charlie Kenton) finds out he has an 11 year old son who wants be apart of his fathers life. Charlies Kenton's 11 year old son (Max Kenton) goes with his father Charlie to robot boxing matches to support his father and his robot but as usual Charlies robot meets defeat. That is until Max finds an old sparring robot in a junkyard where nothing too great is found other than spare parts and wrecked robots but it seems the sparring robot is quite special. With the determination of the sparring robot and Max's stubbornness, Max's sparring robot beats every robot it faces including the best.
''Real Steel'' is a must watch with a familiar face, best known in Hollywood for his role as 'Wolverine' in the hit 'Marvel' franchise 'X-Men' named Hugh Jackman. The movie has a definite few surprises with an unbeatable bond between father and son which is shown well in ''Real Steel'' between Charlie Kenton (played by Hugh Jackman) and Max Kenton (played by Dakota Goyo).

#376- Movie Highlight! - Shutter Island (2010)
Director: Martin Scorsese
Short Review: ''Shutter Island'' is one of my favourite thriller/mystery's of all time starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the leading role 'Teddy Daniels' who isn't quite as he appears. I will not go into detail too much into the plot of the movie as to not spoil any of the details as ''Shutter Island'' is a movie best understood by watching it yourself without reading too much into it, so that you will enjoy watching it more.
Mark Ruffalo also performs well in the movie playing his role as Chuck Aule but again, I will not go into detail on the character and the role he plays in the movie as not to spoil anything. It is hard to write a review about a mystery movie as it is difficult not to spoil parts of the movie for the reader as understanding areas of the movie before watching the movie will certainly ruin the experience when watching the movie for the first time. However I will say that ''Shutter Island'' is one movie everyone should see at least once in their lives as it was such an intriguing movie. But then again what more could we have expected from one of the best directors in Hollywood Martin Scorsese (director of ''Shutter Island'').

#420- Movie Highlight! - Thor (2011)
Directors: Kenneth Branagh and Joss Whedon
Short Review: The mighty ''Thor'' (2011) movie is an unmissable movie as it has depth to a fairly simple character which I was surprised to see when I first watched the movie. I was expecting 'Thor' to be a purely brute character with little depth and an unmistakable outfit. Although 'Thor' is a brute with an unmistakable outfit, he is also intriguing with a strong connection with Jane Foster who lives on earth.
There is plenty of action in the movie which allows for some interesting outcomes with a funny twist which leads to some classic funny moments which make ''Thor'' a movie you can watch again and again due to the humour within the movie alone.
Overall ''Thor'' is one of the better superhero films which isn't your typical man with special powers but rather an actual god from another planet which is interesting alone without all of the extras including Odin and Loki who are a couple of interesting characters within the movie.

#448- Movie Highlight! - Underworld: Evolution (2006)
Director: Len Wiseman
Short Review: ''Underworld Evolution'' (2006) is a dark movie looking into the world of vampires and Lycans (aka were-wolves) which are in the midst of a battle with one another. ''Underworld Evolution'' is the sequel to ''Underworld'' (2003) starring Kate Beckinsale as Selene (a vampire) and Scott Speedman as Michael (a half vampire-half Lycan, aka hybrid). The movie picks up where the previous left off with Selene and Michael who are on a journey to hunt for clues to find out the history of their races and the war between them.
Overall ''Underworld Evolution'' was an entertaining movie with plenty of shooting and action to keep one occupied for its duration which seemed to pass by rather quickly when watching it, therefore proving that it was a good movie.

#456- Movie Highlight! - V for Vendetta (2005)
Director: James McTeigue
Short Review: ''V for Vendetta'' (2005) is set in the future where a masked freedom fighter plots to overthrow the oppressive society and tyranny using terrorist tactics. The freedom fighter also rescues a young girl from the police who becomes his ally helping with his plot.
An interesting movie with a great tale to tell which is great considering it is all set in the future as I am usually a little more critique about movies set in the future. But in the case of ''V for Vendetta'' I was happily surprised to see how good the movie was so with this I will advise watching the movie as it is sure to surprise and most certainly not disappoint.

The sentinels which are robots created to hunt mutants and then 50 years later the sentinels would also hunt humans who help mutants which is why Charles Xavier and the 'X-Men' want to deal with the sentinels but they adapt in order to tackle the mutants abilities. This is why the Wolverine must go back in time to meet the young Charles Xavier to seek his help.

#492- Movie Highlight! - Yogi Bear (2010)
Director: Eric Brevig
Review: ''Yogi Bear'' (2010) is a family fun movie with some funny moments worth watching and a light feel throughout as one might expect from a family movie. It is always interesting to watch a movie mixing animation with a real life movie as the combination either seems to fall flat and fail and work, creating a great movie for the whole family. In the case of ''Yogi Bear'', I would say that the combination worked as the light hearted feel throughout the movie and the wacky yet somewhat predictable plot seemed to be very enjoyable.
A lot of people may say that ''Yogi Bear'' wasn't that great as I seem to have read a fair few reviews in the past stating that very point but I am on the other side of the line, as I would argue that the movie was a family fun movie that children and parents can both enjoy watching.

#497- Movie Highlight! - Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Director: Kathryn Bigelow
Short Review: ''Zero Dark Thirty'' is a drama/thriller about the decade long hunt for Osama bin Laden and his death at the hands of the US Navy S.E.A.L.
It was an interesting movie to watch but then again so are all movies based on history but this movie was especially interesting as it was basing the movie on the killing of someone who everyone thought couldn't be caught. Which I guess was in a sense true, considering he wasn't caught but instead shot dead.
The movie flowed nicely with a few slow scenes but then again that is to be expected in thrillers, especially when there needs to be historical accuracies to make the movie feel more realistic for viewers.
Overall I would deem the movie as being good but I would not go as far as saying great in my opinion but certainly a must watch, purely to get a feel of how they found the leader of the al-Qaeda and brought forward justice for his crimes.
