Unusual Music Produced on a Baby Grand

I love piano music and have never seen such a video of five guys playing a piano as this magnificently effusive piece, entitled “What Makes You Beautiful” by the Piano Guys.

What makes this piece so unique is that five guys are cooperatively playing the song using a baby grand piano with the lid detached. What is amazing is the way the men play the piano by not only striking the keys in the traditional way, but also employ several unique methods I have certainly never witnessed!

The Song, "What Makes You Beautiful"

Techniques Used

The piano’s keys are stuck or struck and manually dampened; its strings are plucked from the outside, like a harpsichord or a guitar; and one man creates the sound of strings by using horsehairs or some other such material looped under the strings and pulling it up and down.

Additionally, percussion in the way of palming and tapping the non-stringed parts of the piano and clapping the lid used to cover the keys against the piano front. Vocals in the way of harmonized “Nah, nah, nah, nah”s, accompany the work as well as the quick shifting of the positions of the players quick motions throughout.

The effect is not only a lovely musical piece, but a show of masterful cooperation and a unique performance by the one and only group, "Piano Guys"!

Inspiration for "What Makes You Beautiful"

Taken directly from The Piano Guys website for "What Makes You Beautiful" is the following quotation:

A couple months ago the 5 of us were gathered round a piano prepping for a video shoot scheduled for that day. We were brainstorming ideas when one of us (can't remember who!) got off task and starting flicking a piano string. Since all of us are poster children for ADHD, it wasn’t long before ALL of us had joined in -- banging out a beat, plucking a string, or hitting keys. The brainstorming meeting had been sabotaged beyond repair, but another music video idea was born!

The self-deprecating Piano Guys prove that joking around is truthfully a serious part of making fantastic music with a signature personality as well!
