A Movie Review on The Expendables 2 (2012)
Cheesy one liners. Loads of over-the-top action. This pretty much sums up The Expendables. The Expendables was well received by fans making $34.8M in its opening weekend on its way to a worldwide total of around $274M. The movies biggest is its cast who have all been big cinematic action stars at one time or another, and a few are action movie legends such as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Dolph Lundgren. Critics weren't too kind to the movie with it getting only a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes. With a testosterone fueled action flick like this one, it should be expected that critics wouldn't be too fond of it, especially when take it for what it is, an over-the-top 80's throwback action movie. With the huge box office haul it was pretty much guaranteed that a sequel would be on the way, which is where we are at now. The sequel, The Expendables 2, provides similar cheesy one liners and over the top action, but one-ups the first one in each category.
Starring a massive cast of Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, and Chuck Norris, The Expendables 2 is, with the exception of Nan Yu, an all out testosterone fuel action-fest. After one of their crew is murdered, and a map leading to 4-5 tons of weapons grade plutonium is stole from them, the Expendables head out to seek revenge and stop this mad man, played by Jean-Claude Van Damme. With a cast like this you can't expect the acting to be anything more than terrible. Liam Hemsworth, who plays sniper Billy The Kid, provides the best acting of the whole group, but that isn't saying too much.
The one-liners dished out are corny, but you can't help but laugh when they are said. Each of the actors deliver some of their classic one liners or make references to previous roles they have been in which are, again, corny but funny. Chuck Norris delivers the best line in the entire film. It had the entire theater in stitches. The only actor who I'm not too familiar with is Van Damme. I've seen Universal Soldier but that's pretty much it.
The action is ridiculous. It's over the top, its bloody, but its a ton of fun. Bad guys are killed by the truck-loads and things explode by the dozens. The choreography for the fights and action scenes are done quite well. Jason Statham delivers some of the best fight sequences in the entire film, whether its with his knives or his brass knuckles. Jet Li also offers an impressive fight sequence in the beginning of the film.
There were only a couple of things that bother me with the movie. First was the inclusion of a CGI helicopter in the beginning instead of a prop or practical one. With a budget of about $100M I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been too hard to get one. It took me out of scene for a moment. The other real problem I had with the movie was that Jet Li was only in the first 15 minutes or so of the movie then parachutes out of the plane with someone they needed to save, and is never seen again. It would have been nice to have his presence in the rest of the film but there may have been conflicts with his scheduling. Hopefully he will be back for The Expendables 3.
The Expendables 2 is full of cheesy one-liners and ridiculous over-the-top action, but it's a ton of fun. It's great to see all these big time action stars all on screen together, and I can't wait to see who they add to the cast for The Expendables 3.
The Expendables 2 was released in theaters on August 17th 2012.
